Talking about Matt Wilkes´reserve repack studies got us seriously considering our safety in paragliding, and how well we know our reserve parachutes. We were ashamed to realise that our reserves were well overdue for a repack, and we wanted to get more comfortable with the procedure - and doing it REGULARLY.
So, we threw and repacked our reserve parachutes a bunch of times, and learnt a lot in the process...including making our own accessories.

Lovely as always! When I started paragliding I never understood why so many people almost treat the reserve so weirdly... Like never touching it, never pulling the handle in case it came out and they wouldn't know how to fold it, trusting it was in there yet never seeing it and so on. When I moved reserves from container to container (own 2 reserves, in in main harness, 1 in hike and fly container) people looked at me like I was suicidal! - But to me it was incredibly helpful seeing where and how it connected to the harness hang points or carabiners and so on.

i did the same! i changed the container and didnt like it and changed it back,also helped a friend take his out and look it over after two water landings.I love to know how my equipment works and have some piece of mind.

thanks for further de-mistifying reserves guys, really appreciate it, especially seeing them both flying. I did a reserve throw from my hang test rig in my garage (paramotorist) a couple of months ago and then sent it off for condition check and repack. At least I learnt what it felt like and sorted out how the bridle would deploy but I still think about what it would be like trying to throw it towards clear sky whilst being tossed about like a rag doll. Speaking of which, you two do a great impression of Tombliboos @ around minute 13 ((In the Night Garden for those lucky enough not to be familiar) Keep up the great work and thank you!

Hey, guys! Been watching you guys for a long time and you're awesome! But about the Gemma converted parachute envelope, I'd like to make a small correction.
10 years ago when I was training and going through siv, and we were learning how to repack parachutes, there were a few cases with converts like a tonnel, when they would fall down after a used and had to be pulled, it was very long and time intensive, and it was good that it was a training use.
It all has to do with the envelope packing method, this type of packing is good for a container like Andre's, it looks like an envelope.
But for a tunnel container you have to make a wave stack, I first saw this method of stacking with Independance. This is in my opinion a more reliable method for the tunnel type of container.
I don't do anything with parachutes.
Might buy a paraglider one day.
Even so, I love watching paraglider videos, even the ones where the reserve has been deployed & one thing I know would be a huge help is if there was some kind of powered something to eject the parachute.
Much like a little shotgun. Shoot the parachute away.
I've seen so many videos of reserves being deployed and have always been amazed at how long it takes for them to deploy!
It would be kinda fun to develop a system for a fast deploying parachute.
Reminds me of having my INCROSS 120 repacked and compatibility checked with my new harness.

Good job guys always best to get familiar with packing your own reserve, not rocket science, just practice. I would also recommend getting familiar with doing your own wing trimming. Making un-sheathed lines also easy , fun and a good skill for your bucket list. Take care :-)
all good tips chris cheers! yeah I've done some measuring and trimming and done my own full set of unsheathed lines before for a model paraglider, the big ones are a bit easier to do :)
I wonder if that's a Charly Second Chance. It looks like the one I first learned to pack. I really wish I had the weights when I was packing that one. It's so slippy :D
Nice to see you were paying attention at the DSC Club Repack! Well done Gemma, you've exposed the "steerable" reserve design, just two handles and two short lines to the back rigging lines! Good messages on keeping your reserve in good order and putting time in on learning how they work and pack.

There are many tips tricks and techniques, but the best I think is to always follow the instructions on the manual :)
i have literally opened mine a few minutes ago and then took my phone and saw that you have uploaded a new video. I found out that my reserve was a complete mess. But like terribly bad. It had one auper critical problem wich made it imposible to deploy.
Good thing you opened it then! Phew!
I´ll try to explain one of the problems. My reserve bag is a fabric with four lapels. Each one of the lapels have a buttonhole. To close them shut you have to feed in a flexible string and then feed throug that flexible band the parachute lines. (it`s similar to the way your harness closes the reserve compartment but instead of a pin you feed the reserve lines). So the problem was that aparently that flexible band (closed loop band) was hyperstreched and worn out and so (i suppose) in an effort to make it smaller and tighter someone had made a simple knot low close to the stitching. Then that knot was small enought to accidentally fit throught one of the lapels buttonhole but no the others. That meant that for the reserve to deploy, that know needed to come out the buttonhole the other way wich was suuuper difficult to the point that i had to pull on it
The other problem was that the central line of the parachute wasnt stiched but tied with the worst know you can make. Honestly a know isn`t that bad as long as it is the correct one and the line keeps the same lenght after the knot. man im super pissed aahhahah That was terrible

Btw. Small little tip for accesories. When I'm doing repacking I attach a christmass bell to anything that is connected to the reserve then packing. Aspecialy to the line that goes throught the loops on top ot the canopy. It's good reminder just in case of some fatal error of not detaching all those lines.

Could you tell me how to connect a front reserve? I mean: On the carabinners you connect both paraglider lines and reserve lines. The question is; do the reserve lines go in front or on tha back of the paraglider riser? You get what I mean?

Us hang glider pilots use beer cans as weights. Drink a maximum of two of the weights. No seriously. Any weight will do. Books... or no weights at all. I personally hate the figure of eight bundelling. I have a "diaper" container for my parashute. Opens in a sequenced order but bulges out of every corner. My biggest concern is that the container opens too early and I get any of the "figure of eights" loose to snag ANY "mister Murphy" hook like thingy. Even if I think I do a pretty good job with my packing, I am not mighty impressed with the design. However, I know the system, and I did my best.
Fly sefe. Fly good. Fly high. Love is in the air, you know.
PRO TIP: Use silicon rubber bands for horse mane.

A reserve has been on my bucket list for 5 years ..at first I flew above 1000 feet AGL but on a safe wing and very conservative but now I fly mainly at low altitudes below 100 feet nap of the earth type flying but still on a fairly safe wing so a reserve would seem a waist of money ..BTW that's why its on my bucket list if I ever need it and not have it it will be the day I kick the bucket .
The static from folding on top of carpet is something we need not to worry about?
It's not quite carpet, more like something you put on top of a bed, and we didn't notice any static.
Hello Gemma and André. Love your videos. Keep up the inspiration and positive in put to us pilots.
Think about using a table. I use one for packing which is 80cm x 160cm and clapable. So the chute doesn't pick sand and dust and it's better for the back. I push the table to one wall in the living room where there is a removable peg for the top and in the hall is another peg. To keeping the canopy under tension I use an expander.
Here in Germany the DHV organises packing courses in winter time. Maybe that's an idea too for clubs in your countries? Much easier if someone explaining who is a pro.

Too many ads, sorry... And the first deployement of the lady's rescue made me think, that the whole length between harness and canopy was much too long! The shorter, the better, to reduce the opening time!
Maybe it is hard to throw but when you are full adrenaline, pretty sure you will throw it through the roof.
