Happy new year! Nice little Q-Switched NdYAG laser, very cool teardown series, looking forward to see the optomechanical parts in detail, especially how the signals are routed through the gimbal bearings

Cool Q-switched flash-pumped laser from the days before laser pumps! This thing must have cost an absolute fortune to build. Are you sure it’s for ranging only? Isn’t this the laser illuminator for a laser guided bomb that goes with the system?

It is a pockles cell electro-optic q switched laser. You can modulate the LiNbO3 q -switch to get a unique pulse train per flashlamp pulse. The lamp fires at 15Hz but the output is a pulse train superimposed on it. Ive seen similar but bigger designs made by Quantel 🤓❤

In Ishizu, Mitsuo: "Twisted-mode-laser cavity using crossed Porro prisms for a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser" the author mentions that LiNbO3 Pockel's cell is used for Q switching (no voltage during pumping). The rotated Porro prism introduces 0.21*2pi phase shift between P and S components of the beam. The Porro prisms are not necessarily tilted by 45deg. Still very confusing. But I kind of understand how it is supposed to work.

In that article it is written « The edge of this prism is tilted at 45 degrees from vertical axis and the reflected beam from the prism changes its polarization to be vertical ». Did you mean that this particular sentence is confusing ?

I really like your presentation. With the sentence I don't criticise your video. I have a background in semiconductor lasers and I just find it difficult to wrap my head around the engineering decisions that make this laser rugged. Compared to typical mirrors the Porro prisms send the light back with an offset which probably prevents standing waves in the gain medium (and spatial hole burning). Then they also mess with the polarization. It would be nice to see a simulation or an expert describing what went into the design of this laser.

I love your content. You're an incredibly talented engineer.
Can I ask an unrelated question? Im wondering what brand of dmm probes you are using.

I wonder if they added an optical isolator between laser and transmitter optics.

Sinon bonne année 2022 a toi !!!

It gets a wider audience in English, and this channel is unique on a world scale. There’s nothing like that. No, there are no other channels that cover avionics both civilian and military in such depth. Michel, if you want to have a few videos in French, perhaps dubbed in addition to English, that would be very nice. I can’t really speak French but I think I understand it OK. So it would be a nice treat. In fact, this channel is so unique that even if you wanted to do it in French only I’d watch it with same interest. But not everyone knows French. I know plenty of people who speak 3 or more languages from different language families and none of those is French. The world is a big place :)
