Probably the best known piece of military hardware to be made by TI is the HARM radar-homing missile. They made the electronics and Thikol developed and manufactured the solid fuel motor and airframe.

I’d be surprised if it worked very well, the helium leaches out of the cells over time. The policy was to replace cells around two years of age. I worked on these for a number of years at Raytheon. The US no longer uses them and I don’t think anybody else does either, though we did have a few foreign military service contracts at the time. Your particular model is not the one that was in widespread use - the head mounting systems and some other things in the head are slightly different than the units that were common in the USN’s supply.

Thank you for your comment. That's what I thought, there is a signal on some photo-diodes but there is no sign of absorption, I have tested during several hours without any success. I wanted to design the phase detector for that thing to detect the Larmor frequency but unfortunately this device will never work again.

@@lelabodemichel5162 You’re welcome. When I met the only guy in the world that made the cells 10 years ago he was in his 70s. He had an apprentice, but I doubt anyone could make them now, it was kind of an art form. Even if all your cells light they are probably very weak at best. The process of adjustment and alignment for these to work properly is quite involved with quite a few steps and processes.

I have one of these in my storage unit, paid £35 GBP for it at auction as nobody knew what it was. They listed it as a missile.. lol

    a metal detector for submarines

still unclear what kind of purpose it's serving on an aircraft. is it detecting anomalies in the Earth's magnetic field? is it a military-grade thing that detects EM signals from rockets? how do optically pumped magnetometers work?
again, these questions are probably obvious to you but an average Joe like myself has no idea.

    • @lelabodemichel5162

It detects effectively the very small anomalies of the earth magnetic field created by submarines.

@@crawwwler The analog representation of the magnetic field is fed to a paper chart recorder. A variation of the signal indicates that the submarine is just below the aircraft.

@@crawwwler A MAD can detect a submarine when it is very near to the submarine. The aircraft can spend a long time in the air before detecting something.

The an/asq-81 is complete, I just want to continue a little bit the study of this thing. Which version of an/slq-25 do you have ? Can you send me a picture of this stuff by email ?
