  • Russian prima ballerina Olga Smirnova starts a new life at the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam after leaving Russia to protest its invasion of Ukraine. Although Smirnova still regards the Moscow-based Bolshoi as one of the best dance companies in the world, she says her "conscience compelled her to leave the country."

Wow….I’m really impressed with Smirnova. She has been one of the few female dancers I watch again and again ever since a short documentary was done about her when she surprised (shocked?) the Mariinsky after graduating from the Vaganova Academy and went to the Bolshoi. She is so beautiful she sometimes doesn’t seem real; she’s enigmatic; and her dancing, in every ballet I’ve watched, is other worldly. I’m glad to know she’s got such integrity, but I have to wonder why she chose the Dutch ballet….unless I’ve missed some monumental developments, I thought the company was in a backwater and rarely watched their productions, if ever….crazy development!

Dutch National is making crazy wonderful strides as a world-class company that’s to its leadership. It’s a good fit for her to shine internationally.

It is not true that the Bolshoi Theater is isolated from the rest of the world. I recently saw a report that the Bolshoi Ballet has successfully performed many performances in China. By the way, they promoted two outstanding young female dancers as principal dancers last year.

Основная причина, почему Ольга покинула Большой театр - это муж-банкир, тесно связанный с американскими банками. Тоже мне, "узник совести". Когда убивали людей на Донбассе, в шоке она почему-то не пребывала

I don't have a clue why "stars" are asked for their opinions about subjects that are outside of their specialty. If this person is asked about ballet techniques their opinions have great value but about politics and military action less than zero

You must be highly narrow-minded to express such an opinion. Her home country started an unprecedented war against a neighbouring country. She used her prestigious position to speak openly against the war in Ukraine and manifested how deeply ashamed of her homeland's aggression she is, not only putting herself in danger but also attracting hostile coments from her own family and former colleagues.
She may not be an expert in 'politics and the military', but you don't have to be one to speak against the heinous acts of violence that have been happening in Ukraine by the hands of Putin. She chose to follow her conscience. Her voice and her input on the matter is not 'less valuable' because of her profession, and we could only wish more russian dancers and artists followed her example and took a stand against this senseless war.

@@luisareis1824 not narrow minded at all. But apparently you want a narrative to be pushed and anyone from a dancer/garbage collector/ tree trimmer who wants to give an opinion on foreign policy, history of military alliances or nuclear threat assessment... if it fits your narrative then they should be called a "hero" and given the largest media platform. Keep going with that propaganda angle. Best of luck

By that stupid ass opinion the only people who should ever speak about politics are military generals and politicians. Politics are the peoples problem.

You're giving your opinion. Is that OK because you aren't a "star"?
For a start, Olga Smirnova's grandfather is Ukrainian. Secondly the war is being prosecuted against Ukrainians in the name of all Russians.
It's interesting that you wouldn't protest if a monstrous, murderous action was being done in your name.
You'd keep your head down, eh.

She dances well, so she presumed he can deliver political statements too. I wonder what she would say to people outside professional ballet if they give her advice how to make some ballet moves better, using harsh words like "whats you are doing in mot acceptable" and "this is horrible"...

Other than Anna Netrebko it hasn’t made any difference to Russian and Belarusian opera singers. They’re still in the Rostas of opera houses across the west. I don’t see why the war should hinder the careers of Russian ballet dancers.
