    I just watched Novice Wild campers review on this pack and he proved almost all of Luks points wrong. My impression is that its actually quite a decent pack worth the money (as its cheap)... Not everyone has the money to buy super expensive stuff and ultralight can be very expensive, so I actually would appreciate a decent budget pack which is why I am confused that he hates it so much. Makes me wonder if big channels as the outdoor gear review only push brands that send gear to them.....

      Luke does his very best to analyze gear and be impartial. Unfortunately he often misunderstands products, their purpose and such. He also lets his emotions get in the way and make him biased , so if he doesn’t like something for some reason he will nitpick. Always find fault in things - it can be great as it exposes faults, but it can be overly done like it is here. He also heavily dissed the Naturehike Vik, which according to everyone else is a great tent. Maybe he’s got a trifle with the brand

      It does seem like a lot of the complaints he has with the pack are because the pack doesn’t fit him well, and a few of the other complaints do seem to be nitpicking, having said that, I respect his opinion, but he should not be telling people not to buy it, it’s going to fit everyone differently and have features that appeal to other people. The only thing that I personally don’t like about the pack is that it doesn’t have an attachment point or pocket/pouch for a water bladder, everything else is fine from the other reviews I’ve seen

  • @atypicalhiker
    @atypicalhiker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    This pack works for me. The shoulder strap pocket is useless and way too high but works well for holding a gopro or hiking umbrella. The hip pockets are small but they hold a phone just fine or snacks. I have had no issues with the straps rubbing my neck. The sternum strap works for me but it truly should be adjustable. The exterior mesh pocket is huge and works well to store your tent or camp shoes. It stretches out a lot! The side mesh pockets stretch enough to hold two water bottles each.
    I dont think you were truly fair in your review as this is a great lightweight budget pack that is not nearly as horrible as you made it out to be.

    Love this pack. Have used and will continue to use on multiple trips. Fits great, but I am a normal, 6 ft 1 205 lb guy, rolling a lightweight load with no more than 4 days of gear. Not a single issue presented here has affected my experience with this pack in any way shape or form, and I gave it am honest, outstanding, review for the price.
    If you are looking for a super high end backpack this isn't it. If you're looking for something sub-$100 that's lightweight this is an excellent pack to borrow from someone and give a shot for a weekend trip.
    Best wishes.

    I have the dcf version of this pack, it's very similar to my HMG pack. Every trip I've taken this pack on, it's worked well for me. He's right about a couple things, like the hip belt pockets, they're tiny, you can fit bars or your car keys and that's about it. It's a one size fits all kinda thing, it doesn't give you sizes to choose from like other companies. I'd say it would be equivalent to a size, mens large. I'm 6'3 and it fits me quite well. I would change the size of the hip belt pockets, but it's by no means a deal breaker for me. Overall I'm glad I got it. If you're 6 foot or taller it's not a bad bag. If you're shorter than 6 foot, then frame size will be an issue. But if you're taller, it'll work fine. Normally his reviews are in point, but this one missd the mark. Only thing I can think of, is that he's not as tall as me, and the frame size is meant more so for taller people. The pack would have been more comfortable if he had the right sized pack.

    I have the dyneema version of this pack. I carried 29 lbs comfortably over 75 mi in 4 days. One day I did 25 and a half miles it's 6,000 ft of elevation gain. I'm six foot one and I found it completely comfortable. I was able to stuff my whole tent and ground cover in the outside main pocket. The side straps are used to compress the top roll back you don't have to click it together at the top you can impress it down the sides by connecting. I like your reviews a lot Luke and trust them. I got mine today, and at 6'2" & 180 this fits me just fine. It's got a nice little aluminium frame for rigidity, there's plenty of padding in the back, the hip belt's fine, and the sternum strap is where I'd expect it to be. I'm packing a 16 pound pack for a 2 week / 300 mile hike and it seems perfectly fit for purpose. Seems you need to be over 6 foot to be happy with this backpack. Also the strap-closure for the top isn't as demonstrated in this video, it's a lot more secure if done correctly.

    Actually a 60L + 5L ….so that was wrong…. Then the way he cinches up the roll top … so that was wrong…. I can fit my iPhone in the hip pocket …. So that was wrong…. He never talked about the adjustable hip belt to lengthen the torso length… so that was wrong …. It definitely has its foibles for sure … it does not work with short torso lengths definitely …. But try getting a pack that weighs around 2lb for that money ! I don’t know why his was so uncomfortable … I’ve done a number of multi day trips with mine with no problem perhaps Luke didn’t have it adjusted properly or he had it overloaded ….

  • @montytooth
    @montytooth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I've hiked a couple of hundred miles with this pack. I didn't find it rubbed on my neck at all (I'm 6" and around a 16 inch neck) whilst wearing a t-shirt but did find the torso length really weird - it is somewhat adjustable but even for me I think it was a little long. The shoulder straps are attached at the wrong height I think, so they didn't shape all that well for me. I agree with the point that it is difficult to see what body type this is ideally suited for - someone tall and skinny maybe? Odd choice considering Naturehike's main market is China domestic plus the rest of SE Asia.
    However it was comfortable with a 7kg BW / 13 Kg total and I've done some pretty big days with it. The hip belt pockets are not as bad as made out here I don't think. All in all for the $70 it cost on sale I think its excellent value. I intend to keep using mine in winter and going for something smaller in summer.

      Good point. Noticed that too.
      This list at 12:35 is funny. I can imagine how this meeting went. What can we think off how to use a backpack. You can also use it to crawl home on your knees while being drunk coming from the bar. Good point. You can put in a book, a duck, a squirrel, a fish but not a tuna, a table leg, flowers, a coconut, firewood, veggies at the supermarket, beer (sold separately) or body parts after you murdered someone, maybe not all of it at once depending on the age. Use it on a bus, in a train, on a boat or floating on one of them blow up unicorns. It's useful when a comet hits the earth cause maybe you are not hiking where it strikes but you are back at the shop to buy another pack that's good.(Company meeting mumbling...guys what else can we think off)
      And the disaster prevention is funny. Not buying this pack prevents the biggest disaster.

    The "three inches apart" design isn't all that uncommon. The difference is that most angle them outward enough to compensate. My GoLite is similar behind my neck, but the 20-30 degree angle puts it around 7 or 8 inches on the shoulders.

  • @Yominokun1
    @Yominokun1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the main problem with this pack is that it's not ajustable for back length. This means that a shorter guy (no offence intended, i'm just 1m79 myself) will not get it to fit right, which leads to the comments about the gap width with the shoulder straps, and sternum strap etc. Honestly, none of my packs have a wider width between the straps, and that's not a problem if the pack is the right size for you and the straps aren't located at your nape. The only times i've found it to be a problem, is with packs which are just too big for me.
    If the shoulder straps are digging into your shoulders or neck, then you haven't fit the pack correctly (if it's adjustable), or it's just the wrong size. The shoulder straps shouldn't be carrying the weight, but instead should just be holding a hiking pack to your back. The waist belt is what carries the weight. None of my packs even have the shoulder straps touching the top of my shoulders when adjusted well with the load lifters.
    Also, you get what you pay for. At the pricepoint, it's a good pack, AS LONG as it's the right size for you. That's why most packs have adjustable backs, or come in multiple sizes. Which is definitly something naturehike should look into.
    Not to say there aren't problems (no sleeve for a hydration system seems weird for a pack with ports for it, but i do think you were a bit too harsh in your review due to the reasons mentioned above, which just point to you using the wrong size pack for your body type.

    I have this pack but don't have as many issues with it. But I also would only recommend it to guys with long torsos. For me reaching back for water bottles is the easiest out of all the packs I own. I find the foam on the back doesn't really touch my back so it's quite breezy. The sternum strap is just high enough for me. But yeah, the hip pockets are too small and the shoulder straps aren't well designed. I plan on adding some soft foam on the shoulder straps

  • @JonWrightMusicTV
    @JonWrightMusicTV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Sounds like it's just too big for you? I have the same strap spacing on a Lowe Alpine bag and that 'neck space' is not an issue at all because the straps come from below your neck. Not sure how tall you are bit it looks like it's just too big for you.

    This review seems odd. I thought it was normal at first, but then you started complaining about every single detail of the pack... I only managed to watch till the "belt pocket part not being big enough to carry a phone" when showing a quite good sized pocket that would hold any regular phone, I really don't know if you are some of those people that use an ipad as a phone LOL., also the shoulder straps being "too close" is very over the board, I've seen backpacks with even less space between them not presenting problems to anyone, and here suddenly it's a big deal? What are you 4ft as 8ft to find this troubling?
    All in all this seems as an unfair review that is seeking for points to nitpick..

    I got the Dynema version of this pack because of the features and great price. Also had seen some reviews that were mostly positive, though some did point out the issue with the sizing not being right for everyone. Ive yet to do a hike in it, so can't speak to the comfort issues yet. I did a max weight packout test and it seemed ok, no issue with the straps on my neck anyway. The load lifters work at first but seem to slip, at least with the weight I had in. I didnt notice a major issue with the sternum strap but again I didnt hike in it yet. The build quality seems very good for $100AUD. Though I notice yours seems to have uneven straps? I even noticed the outward bend in the straps which presumably is supposed to be for your neck is too low, near you chest. Could be why you had neck issues. Hopefully the comfort for me is "good enough" even though I'm only 5'7". If not, I'll see if any of my taller mates want it, might be great for them. We don't have a lot of affordable options in Australia, so it has a lot of initial appeal.

    Looking at some of the comments, some people really like this product and love using it, although the cons made in this review should be considered when looking to buy a new backpack, sometimes if you like something, your just going to like it 😊

    What you're saying about that bag isn't right. I have the 40l which is sufficient for my ultra-light long distance walking practice. I have broad shoulders and a big neck. On the 40l, the attachment point for the straps is quite low below the shoulders, and therefore the passage of the straps over the shoulders is quite wide. On the other hand, I paid €67 for this bag including postage. Given its low price, I did not hesitate to modify it. With the sewing machine, I removed a strip of foam in the middle of the back, creating ventilation. I cut some appendages and reduced the weight by 170g. I never walk with standard equipment. Even my high-end gear is modified to match my practice. To wear this bag comfortably, you have to start by properly tightening the chest strap, that makes all the difference. With the tent, the mattress, the duvet, the meals, the stove, the clothes, the lamp, the knife, the soap, the towel, the toothbrush, the sawyer and the container, I have 5kg on my back. Plus 1.5kg for alcohol from the stove, water, and food. With this weight, the 40l is no less comfortable than any lightweight bag.
    Ce que tu dis sur ce sac n'est pas juste. Je possède le 40l qui est suffisant pour ma pratique de marche au long cours ultra légère. J'ai les épaules larges et un gros cou. Sur le 40l, le point d'accroche des bretelles arrive assez bas sous les épaules, et donc le passage des bretelles sur les épaules est assez large. D'autre part, j'ai payé ce sac 67€ avec les frais de port. Vu son prix bas, je n'ai pas hésité à le modifier. Avec la machine à coudre, j'ai enlevé une bande de mousse au milieu du dos, créant ainsi une aération. J'ai coupé quelques appendices et réduit le poids de 170g. Je ne marche jamais avec du matériel standard. Même mon matériel haut de gamme est modifié pour correspondre à ma pratique. Pour porter ce sac confortablement, il faut commencer par serrer convenablement la ventrale, ça fait toute la différence. Avec la tente, le matelas, le duvet, la popotte, le réchaud, les vêtements, la lampe, le couteau, le savon, la serviette, la brosse à dent, le sawyer et le bidon, j'ai 5kg sur le dos. Plus 1,5kg pour l'alcool du réchaud, l'eau, et la nourriture. Avec ce poids, le 40l n'est pas moins confortable que n'importe quel sac léger.

    It seems like you are wearing the pack a bit to high up on your back?
    If you lower it a inch or two, it would probably fit better, giving more space for the neck (due ti how the straps are made) and the cheststrap would be higher up.

    • @LiamMarcon

      Yep agreed, there are bends in the straps for it. It's possible it's the wrong size for him or the straps were incorrectly stitched or he's just wearing it too tight and high? Dunno.

    My first impression, seeing this on you is that the shoulder straps are sewn on square at the top and doesn't match the natural slope of your shoulders. That, combined with the narrow spacing is the death knell for it...comfort wise. It looks dumb with the inside edges resting on your shoulders and the outside edges floating in space..lol kinda like and 80's big hair rock band outfit 😏

    I just watched your review and was surprised by how negative your review. Firstly I have been hiking since the 70's and owned a variety of bags. This is my first Ultralight.
    I bought this bag because it is an excellent all-rounder and extremely well priced. I am 174cm, over 100kg, (5'9") and it both fits perfect and I can adjust it up and down enough with the straps. Strap height adjustment at the top on other designs comes at a price of extra weight which I don't want. I can comfortably carry up to 14kg 31lbs. The padding is excellent, there is NO neck rubbing, waste belt works well, its just that the waste pocket are a little too small, can just get my iphone 7 and a snackbar in one. One option here is removal of the waste belt and then using an extra front bag with a waste belt (bum bag) for my camera, a drink bottle and some snacks. I personally have no problem with the small chest strap height adjustment, tho some might. Built quality is very high, so no faults at all. What did surprise me was how tall and narrow these modern bags are, compared to heavier backpacks from the 90's, mine were canvas nylon blend, and had a brain compartment, good bag but 2.3kg. I recommend paying extra for the dyneema version, just for extra security of toughness and rain proofness. I like the removable rain cover.Cost to NZ was $165NZ from Aliexpress, or $101 USD.
    Yes a drink bottle is hard to get at in the side mesh pocket without lowering the bag. I get around that with a bottle in the shoulder pocket, and one in the bum bag. Also, what is wrong with stopping to rest and drink every 40 mins or so? Overall I am very happy with the bag, think it was an investment in my outdoor life.

    I bought one of these trying to get a lighter pack over my existing 60L. Straight away, it seems a lot smaller in comparison. I double checked I'd not been accidentally sent the 40L version - it is embroidered with 60 'liter' and weighed at 1.25kg is roughly as expected for the "60L". It was ordered direct from naturehike's store. On measuring it though my suspicions are confirmed: 27cm wide (i.e. top edge of back padding), 18cm deep (across side, padding to rear netting), 85cm tall (bottom of rear padding to extended roll top with one turn to close). Multiplied out this comes to 41L. Can anybody else with this pack do some measurements, have I been sent a dud (though the weight and embroidery are telling)?

    This is NatureHike’s take (a poor take) on the fabulous Gossamer Gear Mariposa. I find it’s impossible to access my water bottle in all backpacks. My main con with respect to the Mariposa pack is that it’s extremely difficult to get my large gear into the main internal pocket because it collapses in on itself. I appreciate its light weight (2 lbs), but I would like a detachable brain option and a bottom accessible pocket.

    Damn Luke , i ordered the Dynema version last week, i guess i will need to mod it, remove the pocket on the straps so i can move the sternum strap and then unstitch the shoulder straps and move them an inch over, everything else seems fine though , i am glad you made this video even though i already ordered one, waiting on customs to release it.
    Things i like about it are the roll top as it enables me to store extra clothing at the top and also you can secure the buckles to the side also, so its not just a standard roll top. I like the cordage on the sides but will replace the cord with bungie cord and i knew this before ordering. The small pocket when i remove it and resow it and move it lower will be good for gps device. I like the kangaroo pocket and
    the single main compartment. The pocket above the kangaroo pocket i will put a water bladder in if i decide to take one but there is plenty of room in the side pockets. Once i mod my pack it will be ideal for me

    I think someone did wee wee in Luke’s corn flakes or is it raisin brand! This pack ain’t near as bad as he claims, though not perfect, but for the price it is fine. I have humped so many packs over my life time both in my 20 years in the Marine Corps and after I retired 20 years ago. If you look at Luke’s gear, he is a bit spoiled although I do enjoy watching his videos, but sometimes he goes high and to the right every now and then. He must make some good money,because I could never afford a lot of the gear he carries around in his videos. Plus he can be a bit of a poser, coming across as the Aw Shucks kinda dude😂
