A warning to the gardening community about wood chips. Be aware if your chips are dusty or gassy to wear proper respiratory protection when moving the product. Or using in livestock/pet areas. This is from personal experience, twice, I have contracted a condition called farmers lung. For me debilitating flu like symptoms. With the money saved pick up a harbor freight or 3m respirator. Not a n95 a true respirator. I am not saying do not use free wood chips just be aware of the danger.
This is an important comment. I'm sorry to hear that you came down with this condition. There isn't much else I can add to this. Before moving woodchips make sure they're well watered. Dusty conditions allow mold spores to be more easily airborne. When turning any type of compost it's a good idea to use some form of close fitting mask. If fitted correctly it should be a little harder to breathe through.
At the 9:36 minute mark in the video I stated If you GOOGLE "How leaf mold is made". I misspoke. I meant to say If you GOOGLE " How Humus is made". I hope this didn't confuse anyone.
@@elisabetk2595 If you type in the words you will get different answers. My goal for composting this way is to produce as much humus as possible in the end product. Humus is the most valuable part of leaf mold.
That’s just what I needed! I appreciate this so very much Gary!! You and wife’s videos are so awesome and I think you guys are doing the world a wonder of improvement. In my world anyway! Thank you!
ugh. I could not change the screen on my phone and it would not even let me give you a thumb up.... so I am going to let it run again on the computer and thumb up! worth it, you - both of you - always have great ideas!!!
Wow!!! I sooo admire the way you're both using everything to make what you need!!! So easy, cheap and practical! That's so great cause as these compost bins have no bottoms they can feed also the trees while the materials in those bins are braking down! So brilliant! I don't have a land but if someone has the land this is such a brilliant way to make his compost bins and in the same time he can feed the trees! That's the way how you can perfectly work with nature!!! 👏👏👏
I have been using the old washing machine baskets as raised bed containers. I spray paint them chrome to try to make my garden containers more consistent. I am going on three years with them.
Wonderful idea I literally was just thinking what I could do for my fruit trees that my dogs couldn't run away with it. Thanks so much for this wonderful video
Thanks Gary! Great video. About 16 years ago I used a very similar setup (only without the cardboard). Those of us about to be inundated with oak tree leaves in the Fall, need to remember to add a variety of other things to the pile. Oak leaves really need help to break down. Wish I had access to chicken manure, but I did find out that using coffee grounds and shredded paper are a wonderful help.
Thank you for all the great information. I enjoyed this as you said what to do and you also did what you said and that helps me by seeing it done. All the best.
Wow! I love this method of composting! We have a some of that wire and I can get cardboard boxes from a DG store, and I live in the middle of the woods and we always mulch our leaves because we have around 75 to 80 trees, mostly oak, in our 2 acre yard. Thank you for sharing this video with us!
Your timing is amazing! My husband was just talking about this yesterday and telling me about expensive gizmos that I could use in my garden, and I said "nope! I'm gonna see what videos Gary and Robbie have done" and there you are...posting a video on the very day I need it!! You and Robbie ALWAYS come through for me, no matter what question I have or what situation I find myself in, all I have to do is look through the videos. Love you both!!
You have a great husband if he wants to buy you expensive gizmos. However, simple is often best when it comes to gardening. Nature does a great job without any help from gizmos 😁.
Wow, Gary, what a great video! Very good idea and so informative. I have loads of oak leaves every year. I also have some of that wire I got from a garage sale for nearly nothing. Gonna try this! And share your video on Facebook. Thank you! 💖🌻
Thank you for another great video. I had been concerned about having my compost bins next to trees, because all the roots kept growing into the compost, but your video has assured me that this is actually beneficial to my compost. Thank you for all the great information!
OK. I'm sharing this with my helpful husband. He'll follow Gary's instructions to a tee! Thanks Gary, I've been composting for years and I like to try different methods. Great for beginners and anyone else.
What an awesome idea. I am going to try this too. I just got my first bag of cement mix to try my rock border. I am waiting for the weather to cool down a bit. Thank you and Robbie for sharing all your good ideas.
I hit my leaves with a Weedwacker right in a barrel before dumping them into the compost bin. I had wondered about various species of leaves but you just reassured me so thanks. You’ve given me a lot of good ideas thank you - Just learned about the fungi so very timely. I’m Going to look and see if you have more videos on the mycorrhizal fungi
I will definitely be using these ideas. You and Robbie are brilliant. I never thought to use cardboard to line my wire compost bins. And locating them next to fruit trees is so sensible. Thank you!
This looks like exactly what I need for my banana and papaya trees and can set up a few raised beds like that or just grow things on top of the compost bins. Thanks Gary!
Great timing!! I built a small compost bin at my daughter's using hardware cloth, and add a layer of grass and clover with each addition of food scraps. Lining with cardboard is a great tip - I want to build some leaf bins as well, and my daughter wants to minimize use of plastics..
I have a compost bin that I got from Costco. It okay but it’s enclosed and doesn’t allow air and water to enter. I like your method better. I’m going to try it. Thank you!
I use a trash can with holes drilled in the bottom. For other forms of compost I will reuse the empty bags of store bought soil and peet. You want to use as least the 2 cubic foot bags for composting.
Another great video, Robbie and Gary! By the way, Gary mentioned chicken waste in the compost. Have you ever done a video on your chickens? I'm sure it would be fun to learn about! Thanks.
I have noticed the Hackberry near my compost bins is sending roots over to the piles. Does it harm the trees when the roots get ripped out when the compost is turned or harvested?

Yes it will. However Coastal Redwood lumber has properties that preserve it from decomposition. It will eventually break down but will take much longer. Smaller pieces of anything break down faster. An added nitrogen source may help to accelerate the process.

Perfect timing thank you very insightful..
Thank you, your welcome.
Perfect timing Gary! I was just thinking there has to be an easier way for me to start composting without help from anyone and this is it! Thanks
Glad to help

Will this work if I don’t have access to chicken manure?

Wht a very informative video. Composting made easy. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

That is a great, simple and cheap idea. I am going to use this method for sure instead of my black plastic compost bins
Thanks Dave.

GARY, DO YOU ADD RED WORMS TO YOUR COOL COMPOST TO SPEED THE DECOMPOSITION?
No the worms migrate into the pile when it starts to break down. They move in from the damp soil around my trees.
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Great! I know Robbie mentioned worms finding her compost in her bins. Makes sense!
What do you use to cut the wire? Bolt cutter?
I have sheet metal cutters. Bolt cutters or even pliers will work. I edited that part out, Thank you for bringing that up.
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy thanks! Wasnt sure what to buy to do it.

Why are tannins from oak leaves bad? 🍃
