    The technology to run today’s farms is fascinating. I’m sure all of the old school dairy farmers are watching from the alfalfa and cornfields of heaven, tipping their caps forward, frowning, and saying, “Boy, back in my day … “

    Great farm tour. Thanks to both Matt and Jan. It is great to see how technology is helping farmers.
    A great idea to mount phone mast on top of a huge silage bin. Views are great in BC different from the flat flat flat Sask prairie. Greener there too, looks like they get more rain.
    Nice to hear you have a lighter day because of the rain.

    Thank you for sharing a very picturesque dairy. The scenic area is a familiar site. Once you hit Chilliwack, you see wonderful farm land as well as berry crops. We used to go out the the Abbotsford area every summer when my wife's parents were living. The Coquihalla Highway helped shorten the drive from Calgary. Thank you for sharing a different dairy with your viewers.

    Well there you have it folks, if we're going to continue to have farmers, the young farmers want the up-to-date equipment like this facility has and that cost money. Quite the investment here for 55 cows and bravo to him for taking the chance to continue what he obviously loves to do and that's farming. Is it expandable to put in a another robot down the line? Thank you for helping to feed the world and the best to you always.

    • @mikeryan7213
      @mikeryan7213 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Robots are for lazy farmers, or for those who expand beyond labour capacity. With modern parlour appliances like ACRs, drafting gates, automatic feeders, teat sprayers etc, milking can be done quickly and efficiently. Robots also don't suit outdoor systems generally.

    • @Oak_Hollow
      @Oak_Hollow 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @mikeryan7213 Many climates don't suit cows outdoors most of the year...
      Well fed, unstressed cows produce more milk than if they are stressed. If the system gives them the most contentment, least stress that is possible, it is a win-win system for both the cow and the farmer. Indoor freestalls with a 24 hour buffet have proven themselves to do just that.

    Thanks Matt for the tour of your awesome dairy. The technology available now is pretty cool. My uncle used to milk his cows on a wooden stool into a galvanized bucket and then carry it into the house and run it through a cream separator. The REALLY good news is, unlike ‘normal’ cell towers and wind turbines, when it breaks down/gets electrocuted by lightning/ceases to function as required by the cell or power company, Gala Dairy is still able to use the silo for silage - it’s not lost and wasted ground like current cell towers and wind turbines you see sitting in cornfields everywhere taking up a lot of space for the remainder of time.

    Beautiful farm, beautiful video, stunning countryside. I am a Hoosier who's never seen anyplace like that BC countryside, and it takes a dairyman's video farm tour to get me there, but it would take a lot more to get me home.
    Thank you, Jan and Matt, for the beautiful tour, as a lactation nurse in a hospital I was impressed by the longevity of the lady who has had 8 calves and 10 years of lactation. And she's still at it. I hope I got those numbers correct! Does she have a name? Your barn-in-barn is nice. Lovely video. Thank you for sharing your farm visit with us. Lovely valley and proud dairyman! Thanks for the tour. I’m happy to see young people keeping dairies going. The costs to run a farm vs the profit made are leading many dairies out of business. Automation must be expensive but modernizes the business and allows for an improvement in all facets of milk production, animal health, safety and control. Your herd in BC looks healthy and happy. Your old cow must have a name. The care you’ve given her has given her a good cow life. They have such happy faces. Greetings from the Tillamook region of Oregon.

      It’s half sales pitch; the feed wagon capacity on that unit isn’t big enough to only feed once or twice a day so instead has to go out six as a result. So… instead of calling that a liability it’s sold as a benefit.
