You didn’t get scammed. It’s a long ride from the airport to the city center. It cost a little more than a Grab drive on our recent visit. Taxi is always more expensive in every cities.

Don’t worry! 500,000VND for a taxi from the airport to the city center is actually not a scam 😊 most price ranges for this route is around 500,000 so don’t worry. The locals might get a better price at 400,000 (because we bargain 😂) The route is long, it’s normal here.

@@greatrug427 100k is because the hotel you said is near the airport. If further, the price obviously has to be higher. 300K is also a good price, and this usually is with discounts in app or something (like you can bargain).

@@VIVIDBLISS 2 days is quite a rush. You can stay in Hanoi for a night. Also there is a national event (Independence Day) from August 28th to September 2nd, and hotel price is likely higher than normal days.
A good price range for 1 night 2 people in Hanoi Old Quarter is from 600.000 VND to 1.500.000 VND. If less than 600, the room might be very basic like a small apartment with limited services. If more than 1.500, these rooms are mostly from luxurious hotels or something similar.
If your family is like 3-4-5 people, the price should go up depends on the number of your family members. Like from 900.000-2.500.000

Hanoi airport to the city center is roughly 1 hour ; Saigon airport to the city center is 15-20mins ..........so Saigon should cost 100.000-150.000 per person, whereas Hanoi should be 200.000-250.000 person ........ To be correct you are lost in both cities ...if you don't have much luggage ask for buses, they have buses in both airports to the city centers for 1/10 of the taxi costs. Please do more research and pay more attention to bus services then you should be fine .

Hey !! I just arrived in Hanoi a few days ago and I get what you mean by the taxi being much more expensive than HCM but that’s also bc the airport in HCM is much more closer to the city center.
My third time in Hanoi, and I just found out about the express bus, it brings you to the city center in about 45-60mins for only 45K ! I took Bus 86, and had a seat all the way so it’s pretty alright. You can always hop on a grab again after to get to where you need to

You should have taken the bus into the city. Way cheaper. And if you didn't want to take the bus, then use Grab to get a taxi (or is that not offered on Grab?). I think bia hoi is the cheapest beer, but the price has like doubled or tripled the past few years. That noodle bowl you had did not look anything like bun bo Hue at all. It's more like bun xao or sorts to me. Always ask the price before buying anything.

Hands down, THE best video of Hanoi I've seen yet - and I've seen a ton! I nearly fell out of my chair howling with laughter more times than I can count! This video REALLY captures the vibe of Hanoi streets better than anything else out there - I almost feel like I don't need to go there now - ALMOST. This is infectious. The only thing I want Vietnamese people in the market follow the honor and honesty of the Japanese. We as foreigners will pay as the same price as their own Japanese ! As a Vietnamese American myself I hate to shop in Việt Nam , they just do not tell the actual price they want to sell but rather say double prices and shoppers have to bargain, just waist my time. I just do not want to shop in VN at free market. I always look for elderly sellers who are always honest with the price and I can pay them double to help them and I do not mind that. Go to the department store, I hope the shopping is much more pleasant! The price tags is on the merchandise, buy it or walk away. No wasting my time!

I suggest using Google. I was in Hanoi 3 weeks ago and took a bus from Noi Bai airport to Old Quarter for 45k vnd, less than $2. It took about 1.5 hrs. and was a 10 minute walk from bus drop off to my hotel. Doing a little research and using some public transportation can save you some $$.
