RIP Shawu, an Orphaned Elephant who touched hearts around the world.

- A tribute to an incredible little orphaned elephant, named Shawu. He sadly passed away suddenly on Monday 18th June.
We walked a long road with this little elephant, after he was rescued and brought into our care at HESC in December 2016. He had been wandering on his own, possibly abandoned by his herd, and was weak, scared and dehydrated.
We nursed him back to health, and when the time came, and he was ready and a strong young elephant, we introduced him the resident Jabulani Herd at Camp Jabulani, where he has thrived ever since.
Sadly, on Monday, Shawu passed away suddenly, due to heart failure. And we are all incredibly devastated.

We would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to everyone who donated, sent messages of support over the past 18 months with Shawu, every little message and all the love you shared with us and him.
He will be sorely missed by his family of elephants, and his family of carers at HESC and Camp Jabulani

I'm so sorry we have lost another baby elle. They win your heart ❤️ over, and all you can do is love them. Every single elephant we lose is a terrible tragedy. God bless you Shawu. You brought so much love to everybody who met you. Now you are safe and very, very much loved.

This baby had the most fun and best life.
It is too bad all rescues are not guaranteed to be successful and permanent.
Baby elephants can be so fragile. I understand it took Dame Sheldrake over 20 years to work out the perfect milk formuela. We have so much more to learn and thanks to the kind of work you do, more precious animals will be rescued. Thank you for your wonderful service. And God bless Shawu now in elephant spiritual bliss.
What a tragedy. These elephants are so precious, each and every one of them. Due to human greed and stupidly, their number are decreasing, rapidly. At least he did not die by the hand of man. He had two enjoyable years. R.I.P.xx

I can only imagine how heartbreaking losing Shawu was. What a beautiful way for life to end, surrounded in safety, comfort and love. Shawu’s last 2 years were wonderful and of great value.
He was probably left behind because he could not keep up with the herd and they understood that. Thank you for his care and all you do.
And Lammie is always there to help comfort.

The wee ones are so very fragile. They seem to be doing so well, and then...they are gone. And so sorely missed. Shawu lived to experience the joy of family; safety and security; a full tummy; mud baths; long walks with his beloved Adine and Carers; love. R.I.P., little one.

That is the hard thing, the loss of an animal which you have loved and nurtured. I know with horses. Thankful for more understanding of the circle of life. It is enriching and heart wrenching.

Shawu passed away, Mopane also passed away similar age. Praying that Khanyisa will be a success. Just wondering because they all were orphaned and were weaned too early their diet cannot support their needs enough despite rescuers best efforts . I read that most baby elephants need real mother's milk for up to five years before they are completely weaned naturally.

Just found this video. Incredibly sad he passed away too young, from heart failure. Glad he wasn’t found trapped in a snare, like others & glad that he knew the love of the humans who cared greatly for him, and the awesome herd who welcomed him. 😔 💖

I think elephants are very perceptive, his family would have never left him however, something was wrong with the little guy and if he were a threat to the herd and they knew they couldn’t save him, he was a baby, the answer was to walk away, leave him to be eaten quickly by animals who were in need of food for their young. When he was found and given the love and perhaps medicine and food that helped him live a while longer. I think the herd he was introduced to, being orphaned themselves would have loved him no matter what could happen. It would be interesting to play back some of his gatherings to see if anything would lend itself to his inevitable departure. Perhaps there’s less interaction with one or two of the older elephants, did they act differently the night or morning he died. There’s so much to learn from animals especially elephants. It may have been that as a baby the matriarch of the original herd was dominant and didn’t give mom a choice however in your herd the variables are quite different. I look forward to reading more, which by now there most certainly will be. Elephants go to heaven too, he was needed for a special assignment and you helped to make his journey a special one.

Death is inevitable but the console is shawu was not an orphan one.he was blessed with good family and loving herd.may God shawu would have a happy life in his next birth.

Such a sad story. I still wonder how the Jubalani Herd handled it. How they felt a couple of years later when orphaned Khanyisa arrived. Did they expect to lose her after a few years just as they sadly did her predecessors?

Thank you. If you would like the full story, you can also see our facebook page.. but basically his heart failed. We did not have any idea nor did he show signs of issues with his heart. On Monday though, he got tired very quickly all of a sudden, and we called in a wildlife vet, who sedated him to take some tests, and to rehydrate him too, in case this was a problem. But he passed away during process. Post mortem shows it was his heart. But we wait for further testing now to see why. Thanks for your care and concern

I'm sorry I don't want to sound like a mean person but it's a very strange two elephants one after another pass away all of the sudden almost in the same age and then Little Fenya! Story giving me feeling like maybe not enough medical care and treatment for them?!
Baby Elephants often suffer instant death. As for Fenya , her injuries were unsurvivable. It's a miracle she lived as long as she did.
Have you found the reason for their passing. Maybe the formula you fed them caused problems for them?
Do you really believe the formula was to blame? Ridiculous. Fenya suffered far more catastrophic injuries from that snare than people knew. We were not shown the extent and for good reason!
