This is why minis and samples are really important.. lets say the swatches look good on you but you wont know how the product lasts on a longer wear. Will it irritate your skin, crack after hours, wear off, etc
Totally agree. I do have a makeup graveyard of sorts of stuff I bought but don’t like enough to use daily- used for when I’m playing with makeup/being creative with it. I carry my makeup bag around, and mainly use only 5 products (Trader Joe’s daily sunscreen that doubles as my primer, foundation that’s just a little lighter for covering up blemishes and acting as a lightweight highlighter/contour, the lip chubby stick from Clinique that I also put on my out eye (inner eye is highlighted), tarte blush, and urban decay setting spray to make sure the makeup lasts long/doesn’t smudge). I may go use 6-8 products instead of the 5 if I make extra effort (a small eye shadow palette for my favorite eye shadow look, an eyeliner for my waterline or wings, and sometimes I swap my subtle lip balm color for a bolder dark lip gloss)
I always have some foundation and eyeshadow ready just in case but all I use is lip oil/ lipstick that’s clear and just to keep my lips from drying out, concealer and powder to make my concealer not disappear as fast. Additionally, my trusted mascara. That’s it . More isn’t needed honestly
The video clips she showed are from other TH-camrs who also get gifts. I doubt that there are a lot of people with so much stuff. It's just on the Internet.
Yeah, I don't know if this is the same video, but a similar person who had their original duetted like this said they literally worked their way up from being homeless to being a manager and owning their own home, so they like to splurge on little things to indulge themselves. And that self-care and getting their home organized was a major passion. This girl on the video seems that minimalism is more her passion, and that's fine too. But I wouldn't take everything people say at face value, or say one way is right and the other is wrong. Everyone just has to find out what makes them happy.
it makes sense in the case of ppl who do really creative makeup looks as a hobby or self expression (this is me defending my 10 colors of eyeliner lol), and it even makes sense to shop around and look for a formula you like for a particular product, but everyone just buying something bc it’s new or they heard it recommended one time is crazy. no one needs 8 black mascaras. just finish the old tube before you get a new one, no one is looking at you close enough to tell that your primer doesn’t magically make your pores disappear, and in fact no primer will so you can stop trying so hard. so many products are just straight scams too, like freckle pencils, literally just use a toothpick, water and some dark eyeshadow, it doesn’t take that much creativity, brands have just worked SO hard to make us their slaves that we can’t think anymore, and we’re convinced we’re all ugly and can fix it if we finally find the right combo of products. or even if we’re still ugly we’ll feel better if we have the same stuff as the skinny photoshopped girl on instagram. they’re making us feel insecure so we’ll buy more and more of their garbage. sadly happiness doesn’t come from owning things, fitting in, or being beautiful. society has made it so those things help tho lol
That’s why most people are broke. Society and corporations make us feel lack if we don’t consume. But I don’t care what society thinks, I rather have money in the bank and less stress on how I am going to pay my bills
100% agree with you ❤ All these “hauls” (cosmetics, skincare, clothes - and the worst possible, the popular “shein hauls” 🤢) are just glamorized hoarding behavior. Plus, there is NO WAY that a person can finish all these products before their expiration. It’s pure waste.
I also 💯 agree with you. Most of these small sized makeup and skin care packaging are not recyclable, especially in the US. They just go to landfill. That $30 lip gloss we only used once is going there as well 😭
I’ve always wondered this. Most products have a shelf life and I get wanting to try new things but I wonder if people are wearing expired/old products.
We do, there just isn't enough money to replace them every 6-12 months. I don't wear makeup everyday so the products I do own go a long time. I think I own around 25ish products (not counting brushes and tools), and while I can certainly reduce that number, I'm definitely far from the level hoarding like some people do
I just threw away my urban decay naked palettes away. I had them for over 10 years and didn't really use them. They were still basically new... Def changed something for me - I threw out so much old make up and basically money. It was crazy! But yes I think many just use the make up occasionally over a lot of years
@@Mimi-sg6fe I googled cosmetic calculator and inputted my lot numbers, I had a lot of stuff that was expired so I just use what I have and when it’s done then try new things. Also do trial sizes to see if I like things, less commitment.
I wouldn’t say 6 products lol but we certainly don’t need to have the entire Sephora store in our homes. It looks crazy. If you’re a MUA or a celeb maybe you need more than the average person , but I agree no one needs that much and it makes me uncomfortable seeing it.
Yeah I agree. I have more than 6 products (several lipglosses and pencils) and I only wear makeup to church and events (so not daily). Overconsumption is definitely an issue nowadays.
@joelleweetjewel9948no hate , but ppl with acne or oily skin or dry skin etc; can’t have just 6 products but I Defo agree that overconsumption is a problem
I have 13 products I use for my usual makeup look, but have a few more if I'm mixing things up. I usually only wear makeup for church or social events, and don't always use all 13 products. Even still, everything in my drawer gets used until it runs out. I could completely understand if people wear more than this if they like using makeup as an art form, but no one needs 10 different foundations in the same shade.
My everyday go to look is 6 products: concealor, foundation, powder, brow pencil, mascara, and whatever lip product. Sometimes it's 7 if I want to add blush. BUT I also own a metric f*** ton of makeup. And I only use 6-7 products day to day. It's sad, and it's disturbing how easily we're all being influenced to buy buy buy. 💸
The effects of TH-cam/Instagram beauty guru culture is still being felt. Every page was reviewing some new palette every other day as if they would actually use it frequently, “RUN to Sephora it’s SOOO pigmented!”
If the people you’re watching act like that then watch different people bc none of the makeup reviewers I watch say that shit. In fact they encourage people to shop their stash to get a look similar to the one they created.
I unsubscribed from beauty gurus a long time ago because I knew they were just making me feel like I needed a bunch of stuff I really didn't. It helps a lot, my makeup purchases got smaller and fewer after that because I wasn't being exposed to every last product on the market constantly.
@@rosethorn0232I did the same! Unsubscribed from the QVC makeup gurus. My new fave is Hannah Louis Posten ? I think is how you spell her name idk but she makes not buying things feel so glamorous somehow. She’s just super intelligent and jaded to the whole shopping culture.
Last year I started to consciously not buy products and use up everything I had. It was a bit difficult at first but its now infinitely more satisfying now getting to the last drops of a product knowing I used it fully.
I also do this, I use up my foundation which lasts me to a year and half before getting a new one. I learned the best way to not waste money on products is to be patient before you buy them and taking your time researching before going to the store, because nothing is worse than paying 35$ for a foundation that turns yellow or a a bronzer that’s too orange!
I have minimum makeup too so I used up a multi use stick until it was flat, and i would still scoop out the insides with my finger until that was done. And I’m reusing my lip gloss tube with a small lip gloss jar cause one thing I realized after wearing makeup consistently, I use lipgloss 😂
Thank you so much for this video. Even I realized the burden of buying so many skincare products. It affected my bank balance. Plus I wasn't able to use it all. Now I'm following influencers like you. It made me realize less is more. It gives me the chance to use the product fully and enjoy it one at a time. Plus saves money.
Absolutely. Make up companies are just trying to rip us off by constantly launching new products. Find what works for you and just stick with it! We don't need to try everything. Let the influencers do that with their free PR kits!
Agreed!I found that targeting one skincare issue at a time helps a lot. Its so overwhelming to keep up with multiple serums and creams, not to mention how expensive they are :(
Its also good to do research on your own to not rely on or get influenced by online, after all they are internet people and you are in control on your bank account
What’s comical is that make up expires and becomes not safe to use yet it doesn’t seem to be reflected in peoples large quantities of makeup in their collection 😅
@@barbthegreat586 actually I studied make up artistry at one of the best schools in the country and unless you are very careful to regularly wash your brushes and not contaminate your products then they shouldn't be used to a very long time.
@@tessjune88yes,ok but it's a false claim that, for example, you can't use a lipstick anymore after 12months, or eyeshadow and powdery products post expiration date. If you practice a good hygiene, store them correctly and don't open 15 foundations at once, you'll be fine. My mother worked 47 years in this industry, always said that except for mascara, all the rest is usable, even after their suposedly exp.date (it's good marketing also,...if they'd really care for their users health, they wouldn't exist😊)
Younger generations will go off about loving minimalism so much because of how cluttered our many "collector" parents were, just to turn around and rebrand the same "collecting" traits.
Makeup is my hobby so I don’t mind buying new things. But I mainly focus on eye and lip products because that’s where I get to be artistic. My other products are pretty bare bones. 1 concealer, 1 foundation, 2 blushes
@@sweetembrace6706Makeup doesn’t have to have anything to do with beauty standards. Putting art into makeup is a form of self expression and many people genuinely enjoy it and do it for themselves.
That was me in high school. Constant influx of seeing influencers try this and this and doing this makeup look with this etc. Then seeing THEIR makeup room and stash I thought it was normal. I was a major couponer though and mine was all drugstore. But still. I did not need that much. Ten years later I still have some of it because I feel guilty throwing it away 😅
I’m a little older, when I was 20 years old I remember just having 4 items for my make up. Lipstick, eyeliner, mascara and foundation. In fact I had more than my female friends. I know this because they used to comment about how much makeup I wear. Now people have furnitures pack with makeup. Makes you wonder how easy people are manipulating into buying. All in less than 10 years.
This. I'm starting to wear more makeup now that I'm close to 30, and I feel SO overdone when I wear more than 3 products 😂 I have rosacea so I've always been very cautious about what I put on my face. The lesser, the best (at least for me). I don't get why nowadays regular people buy makeup as if they're MUAs lol
I agree that it’s mind-boggling to have so, SO much more than one person can use or finish. However, I feel like there is a difference between 6 products and “hoarding this many products.” To like makeup and to own a reasonable amount of it is… similar to liking clothes and owning a reasonable amount of it.
True. It's probably best to just buy more strategically. For example don't have 20 different foundations and 50 different lipsticks, those things expire relatively quickly and you'll never finish all of them. But having a larger number of eyeshadow palettes is a little different because they do actually last a lot longer than they say they do and can be disinfected if needed.
I sometimes buy the wrong lipstick shade, and I think that contributes to "hoarding". It's not that I want to keep them, it's that I don't want to throw them away, yet giving them to someone else is out of the question.
Why out of question? You can call me gross but me and my sister give each other make-up that we don’t like. Like „oh i got this lipstick and used it one time but i don’t like that shade on me. You can have it if you want”. Same with blushes or bronzers. The big „no-no” is mascara but the rest is good in my opinion 🤷🏻♀️
@@edgaranalhoe7678yeah I agree, everything but mascara and eyeliner is fine. with lipstick, you could even cut off the top 0.5cm before giving it to someone
If you're utilitarian, sure, but I enjoy makeup and have a LOT more than six products - I do actually use them, though. There are many categories where I have one item (mascara, concealer, etc.), but I like to have several blushes and lipsticks to choose from. I have about ten eyeshadow palettes at one time - which souunds excessive, but I like color! I rotate through them weekly, so everything gets used regularly.
Can confirm! I replaced my pallettes with 3 singles of the eyeshadow i actually use! Some people like to change it up daily, but when i realised i am not one of those people, its like a lihhtnulb went off in my head
Same here! Back when I was desperately trying to master a cut crease lol! I am just that person who wants to spend no more than 20 mins on makeup and skin care. I call it “lazy high maintenance” 😂
Totally agree!! I’m guilty of indulging my daughter but I did the simple MATH of what I’ve bought her through these years…..ugghh! Told her I won’t buy new stuff until it’s all used up for that category. No one needs 6 foundations and 10 blushes!
I believe it’s people who enjoy make up that Often have lots of make up. If you’re doing simple looks like yours everyday that makes sense to not have very nmuch make up!
This not only applies to makeup but also to clothes, shoes and handbags. We're all way over-consuming and should start thinking more about sustainability.
If this is the video I'm thinking of, the original video creator put out a response and said there is more to what is said here. She worked her way up from homelessness, to getting into a management position and buying her own home. Luxury indulgences, self care and organizing is her passion now, and what she does to reward herself for coming so far. Again I don't know if this is definitely the original video I saw the response on, but I think algorithm recommended it to me for that reason. I think people should just do what makes them happy. I would be rewarding myself in some ways too if I was making six figures a year 😁
The video above seems like she’s beauty (content) creator which is understandable. Their job is to review products but for others, like myself, I tend to buy for collection purposes lol. For example, Colourpop’s Harry Potter and Star Wars collection. Kylie’s Batman collection. Or limited edition Kiko Milano products… I do have more than I need, however, I do use them up. I’ve pan Kiko 8 blushes and 3 bronzers.
It's fine to collect things you love but if you're hoarding and want to stop try the 2 bag method. Buy 2 normal sized makeup bags, one gets filled with makeup you're currently using, the other gets filled with new products. Then when you finish a container (or when it expires lol) you throw the old makeup away and open the new in its place, then you can buy more. Don't buy more than can fill the 2 bags, and that's it! Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
What do you do though when you have 5 foundations and not a one is the correct shade? Add that times your 6 products. I have 30 things filling my drawer, but to throw them away is more wasteful. And don’t say to me “Get shade matched”. They are all shade matched 😒 not to mention if you have any affinity for wearing different styles of makeup. It’s an exponential problem. Some people are wasteful. Some people are not.
Most ppl need more than 6 products. And also take into account skin color, texture, desired look, environment, climate, etc. For example I need two foundations because I’m black and shades usually are limited for us so I must mix. Or if someone lives in really hot climate they may need a special primer and setting spray. Overconsumption yes is very much a thing, but individual expression and difference are also a thing. And what works for you others might need a little more help to achieve. Also ppl in the comment apologizing for having more than 6 products learn to find what is best for your lifestyle. This content can be nice but if you want different blushes, foundation types for event, or are trying to go for a look it’s perfectly fine and normal to have more than 6.
that's true. and there are people who have different shades of skin color on their face, and people who use color correcting tints. Not that anyone needs any makeup products, but if you are a person who wears makeup, it's good to take account for those who can't jusr wear one foundation and be good to go.
This. If I like art, are you going to tell me to only have six supplies? Makeup is a craft or art. No need to buy the whole store but some of us want more to create more.
Exactly. I have very bare bones skincare because that's all I need in my mild climate for my average/oily skin. Wash, moisturizer, spf. I don't wear foundation or bronzer or blush. Sometimes I'll use a primer or a finishing powder to cut down on oil. That's it for face. I use one tube of mascara at a time. Lash curler. But, I have ten different pressed powder eyeshadow palettes that I adore and use frequently. I love creating complex eyeshadow looks. I have a dozen water activated eyeliners because I also love doing detailed graphic eyeliner looks. I also have four standard eyeliner pencils and one waterproof liquid eyeliner. Do I *need* all of those? Of course not. The only thing I "need" is my bare bones skincare. Do I use and enjoy everything else? Absolutely yes. I take excellent care of them. They are stored in a clean and dry environment, get cleaned between uses with soap or isopropyl as appropriate, and pressed powder that still looks and smells fine is the only thing I keep past it's expiration date. I'd be so sad and bored with her six products, and I'd never use half of them.
Back when makeup was very popular on yt I was like 12 so I saw all “makeup collection” videos and would just dream about it. Now as a 20 year old I’m very glad we were broke because that makeup would’ve expired before i could’ve used it enough to justify buying it. I have a “normal” amount of makeup and still feel like I don’t use it enough.
Yep, people buy a lot of stuff BUT different strokes for different folks...its none of anyone's business how much people buy. My MIL owns 2 pair of shoes. She would say make up is not necessary and no one needs any.
I own more than 6, but it’s so much better having it all easily fit in one drawer. Even people who say it’s their job will do declutters with a grimace and then go right back to buying 20 new products every month.
Saying people only need six products because of how you like to wear your makeup is beyond daft. Some people believe you need 0 makeup items, some say 3, and some say 15. If you are using the makeup… then that’s the amount you need. If your not using it, it’s excessive.
But she didn’t. She said *she* used only 6 products. Not that everyone has to. It was only an example of how you do not need excess. I'd personally add a sunscreen, but overall the message was solid.
@@rhea1720 She did. She specifically said that she thinks a regular person only needs six products. I agree that the overall message is solid, but the idea that everybody should be using 6 products is too specific. There are a ton of reasonable reasons for people to have more than 6 makeup products in their daily routine or in a regular rotation or just in general, even if six is the number that works for her.
Well, a lot of your content is fax about materials. This, I think is definitely just your opinion. Well, I don’t think you’re judging people for having multiple products. It does sort of feel that way. Some people genuinely like collecting make up and I don’t think that they should feel bad about that. There are people who literally have 56 reusable cups. That to me feels worse.
Influencers like those you featured are also mostly gifted those items and they do giveaways. I have a nice collection of makeup because it's my hobby and I enjoy it. There's no shame in being minimal like you and no shame in being an enthusiast like me. The only thing we need in 2024 is to lose the weight of other people's expectations. You do you, I'll do me and we'll both be happy!
I mean this is the nicest possible way that make up look looks like you used 5 products. And there's nothing wrong with that if it's what your skin needs and it's the look you want. Not everyone does though not does everyone want to have "one look and that's it" and implying that they should is weird. The video you showed is absolutely excessive and crazy amounts of make up products but telling people they should only have 6 products is really giving weird vibes. We get it, you like to keep your make up minimal, natural and you don't want to change it up much. What I don't get is why is that supposed to be aspirational? And like theres something wrong with women that either feel their skin needs more products or like to experiment\express themselves via make up and change things up?
“I’ve done this look with only 6 products”. Okay, good for you. Kind of a thing a “pick me” would say. Also, sorry for breaking the bubble - this isn’t the greatest or most creative/impressive look. People might have very different goals with their make up. Drop the judgement please.
I think people should buy as much as they want. Seriously, it’s none of your business. BUT!!!!!!!! The only thing I do push is financial responsibility that means rational spending. Hoarding this much makeup is a sign that reason is not being used when spending IF those products were purchased.
Listen, I completely (!!) agree that makeup and skincare overconsumption need to stop. And especially all those beauty gurus need to stop promoting this blatant overconsumption through the next viral hype and showing off their HUGE collections. It's so easy to fall into a trap and think that you need all of those products too. I'm honestly guilty myself of buying way more makeup than I needed last year. BUT - hear me out - I don't think the messaging of "you only need 6 products" is very helpful either. Tastes in makeup are different. Makeup and skincare needs are different (skin problems, skin type, eye shape etc.). Saying that everyone only needs 6 products is like saying everyone truly only needs three pairs of shoes and one bag. It is true, but it's also not very realistic, is it? It's about balance and more conscious consumption, not preaching the other extreme, which honestly scares people too. Also, not everyone is naturally beautiful and only needs a little blush and mascara. And some folks, including me, like to express their gender identity through makeup. Still, we should absolutely learn to stop chasing the next "VIRAL" product and limit our mindless consumption.❤
If I remember it correctly, she has oily skin so she just needs to address her oily skin issues. I have mixed skin which comes with a shtload of problems, not to mention the air quality is horrible over here so my skin breaks out so easily. Im around 6 product just for skincare.
Right. Everything you’ve stated, she should already be aware of..she knows it’s not as simple for everyone but posted this anyway. Think it is like a humble brag type of thing to be honest lol.
Completely agree and I also think a lot of people use makeup to create art and spend time doing it as a hobby so it’s understandable why they would have a bigger collection than average
I NEED 2 correctors for both undereyes and redness, 1 concealer, a contour stick, a blush, a highlighter, a brown eyeshadow, another darker eyeshadow, lipstick and lip gloss on top of the fundation, powder, eyecurler, mascara, and at least 5 brushes. 4 face and 1 eyeshadow brush. These 6 products you have don't cover not even half of the more important parts of my everyday makeup
Now I'm discovering correctors and concealers are different things... Girl, you NEED contour? Is that your everyday makeup? (Not judging, I'm just honestly shocked)
@@ZurditaDinamita Correctors and concealers are two completely different products. A peachy corrector will eliminate my undereye effortlessly, but I still will put a little dot of concealer to brighten my undereye and to even out the tone to my face. I can put all the concealer in the world in a red pimple but won't covered it as good than if I use a thin coat of mint color corrector and then concealer/or foundation. I don't use bronzer and I have a round face so contour is a NEED because after putting foundation I would look flat so I need to bring shadows back to my face to bring dimensions. Now you might suggest "just use a light coverage foundation and you won't need to bring that much more dimension" but light coverage foundations last me like 4hrs before I question if I even have makeup on. I usually put makeup at around 6am and don't come back until 6pm (if early), so my makeup must last at least 12hrs on, I don't reapply anything other than sunscreen and lipstick throughout the day. My makeup routine starting with primer will take me 30m when I take my time, but only using brown eyeshadow. If I want a different eyeshadow look it will add about 15m more minutes, not a complex one tho. Eyeshadow looks from 2016 with amazing chromes and blending take at least 20m per eye. Btw even some girls/friends don't think I have much makeup on (other than mascara) because it looks so natural but in reality you can put a thin layer of many products without it looking excessive if you blend them well.
@@bookisland6515 To create a good everyday makeup routine for me yes, I NEED them. I love makeup and doing my makeup so if I'm taking the time to do it I better do it right and it should last my whole day (12+ hrs). I'm the kinda girl that will proudly say how much makeup I am wearing to both girls and boys. Some people will sometimes "complement" how I don't powder my face, or how I use barely any makeup compared to x, but I'll quickly correct them and inform them that have a full face of makeup on and probably more than the person they be comparing me to. If I had the time, I would spend over 1hr doing my makeup everyday with no regrets.
6 products? idk this video is a miss for me. I agree on not hoarding makeup or having more than you could possibly ever need, but this video is unnecessarily judgemental 🤷🏻
yup!! like she has fairly clear skin, and clearly prefers a lighter makeup look, many 'regular people' have pigmentation and skin issues and like experimenting with makeup, using color etc. i usually love her vids but this is giving a one size fits all solution and is using influencer videos as reference lol
@@mariyamsaeed8279she also owns multiple Chanel and Hermes handbags so it’s a weird choice to start lecturing people for overconsumption because they own more than 6 beauty products
i can kind of understand buying multiple of products like lipsticks or eyeshadows, if you want different colors. what i don't understand is why people would buy a hundred different variations of foundation and concealers. why would you need that much?
Well she has nice skin so maybe she can get away without it. I on the other hand need both of those things 😂 Actually it was thanks to TH-cam that I learned the magic of blush and concealer. I used to do foundation only. So I still appreciate the makeup vids at least for application techniques & the newer trends.
Because you have to try a lot to find something you wanna settle with. And then they discontinue it. I write beauty blog and I constantly have to update the products I list because they arent available anymore. Since I started using makeup they must have discontinued my favourite makeup three or four times and I cant find something as good. They just discontinued the powder and the lisptick I was gonna stick to for life and I cant find a color like ot so I had to buy two shades that are close to it.
It’s not obvious. People learn makeup are under the impression that they need to consume that much, despite the fact that influencers are PAYED to advertise so much - hence why they normalise so much product
Thank you. I only buy what I can afford and what I need, with the occasional (couple times a year, if that) indulgence on something different. Watching makeup videos for me is more about entertainment and learning more about application techniques. It doesn't make me go out and buy more.
Soo many people don't seem to understand that makeup can be a hobby and see it only as a chore. Like buying expensive cars is totally an acceptable hobby and nobody disqualifies it even though nobody needs a 250k car and many people only drive because they need to. But somehow collecting makeup and buying different products to try because you want to see if you like them is not an acceptable hobby. 😒
I agree that drawers and drawers of stuff is unnecessary, but "a regular person only needs 6 products"? Girl that is some condescending bullshit. Some people have acne or dark circles they feel more comfortable covering up, others enjoy using color. What YOU like isn't what EVERYONE ELSE needs to like.
It’s all a gimmick. You don’t need highlight for your face. I dislike that weird oily face look, sorry it doesn’t gives you a glow. Over contouring is weird. Especially if you are going out on a date, big surprise to the guy when all that makeup is off. Primer is also a gimmick, it does absolutely nothing. Women look beautiful back in the 30’s 40’s 50’s wearing making without all these gimmicky products.
It’s the same as how many coats you need… don’t be double standards, some ppl are basically having fun with their makeups just like you with clothes, just sayin
People, she’s talking about what works for her. Jeez, everybody is in the comments trying to justify their “need” for all these different products. A lot of people are missing the message completely. It’s one thing to be aware that you use a lot of product, but to try and defend why you use and “need” so much is insane. We’re all adults, do what works for you but she’s just saying that she used ONLY 6 products for THAT specific look. She probably has more for variety etc but the point is that consumerism has told us that we need to always be getting the latest and greatest. Marketing works very well in convincing people to participate so don’t be mad at her if you’ve been got.
Riiiiightttt....if you finally found your make up soulmate/skincare you don't need that much product. My mom said I'm a hoarder for lipstick and I have 6 for different color and texture 😂 she will faint if she look at this
My makeup bag is basically the size of the classic men’s shaving kit. I fit all my makeup and brushes in there and am able to come up with some nice looks. Most people are not makeup influencers. You don’t need to buy as much as they do.
You cant do anything fun with 6 products that's just complexion makeup at that point you're just doing natural beauty makeup that's not what i like about makeup i need color and i like to change my look everyday i cant do that with 6 products
Six is way to little stop saying this. I don't have that much but more than six and I use each of my thing at least 3 times a week. I use 10 makeup items ever day not including burses, and sunscreen. If you are young and have better skin than us over 50.
When I got Sephora rouge I knew I had a problem. People always said it would be so good to get to rouge but it’s honestly embarrassing and now I’m trying to use up what I haven before I buy something new.
I think it only makes sense to have a bunch of lip products. Maybe eyeshadow? But everything else, you just need one of each until you run out. Why do people have so many blushes? You only need one that matches your natural brush color
We got a call out the mega creators that are fueling the overconsumption, and leading to the Sephora kids that everyone makes fun of, even though their brains aren't even developed enough yet . The influencers brains are though.
It does depend on what your desired aesthetic is. Some looks require more products and more brushes. But i do agree an entire room full is a lot. However, everyone collects something so as long as its not bankrupting you or youre constantly asking to borrow money or take loans, do what makes you happy.
YESSS i totally agree, i say play around and buy a moderate amount of product till you find your top favorite products that work best for you, when i did this, i now have the same 8-10 products.use till it’s done, and just replace it. my only exception to this is lippies 😔 i can’t hold myself back from berrie & cherry colors, and if it’s in a lip balm or gloss, it will probably be my downfall 🙃
So you don’t need eyeshadow? And different shades of lipstick? 😅 don’t put your own rules on everyone else, it’s their lives and their choices not yours
For me is because the products I bought perform badly on me so I still try to find the perfect one 😢 though its not that much like in those video. But for a normal person, i have quite a lot of them.
I think that's what she also don't mention. We have a lot of makeup because buying it won't warranty that it will work for us and even if it does our skin changes so it might work when it's dry but not in a sunny day.
No lash curler please. It’s damaging to your eyelashes. If you’re using mascara, which is wet, it defeats the purpose of lash curler anyway. So why bother.
Tbh unless your eyelashes are weak on their own, eye curler won't hurt them much. I been using it for over 10 years and I still have beautiful eyelashes and will still loose like 4 of them a day using it and or not. Personally I like that they fall when I'm curling them and in front of the mirror than in the middle of my day when they can fall on my eyes.
I agree that we have too many products, in many different categories. However, make up brings me so much joy and only having six products would make me very unhappy. I wear something different on my eyes almost every day. I would become bored. But that doesn’t mean I need every palette out there. It is good to be aware of not buying too much.
I totally agree. It’s about time someone said this. We are all going crazy buying more than we need. Me included. Thank you!
But the cat, so cute ❤❤
This is why minis and samples are really important.. lets say the swatches look good on you but you wont know how the product lasts on a longer wear. Will it irritate your skin, crack after hours, wear off, etc
This is so true.. seeing people have this much stuff just gives me anxiety 😂
@@jyotisehra5178 I agree🫤
And worst rhing is you're lining the pockets of these CEO'S
I used to do that, but now I only have a few. Only a bunch of moisturizer, especially this winter season. 😂
it makes sense in the case of ppl who do really creative makeup looks as a hobby or self expression (this is me defending my 10 colors of eyeliner lol), and it even makes sense to shop around and look for a formula you like for a particular product, but everyone just buying something bc it’s new or they heard it recommended one time is crazy. no one needs 8 black mascaras. just finish the old tube before you get a new one, no one is looking at you close enough to tell that your primer doesn’t magically make your pores disappear, and in fact no primer will so you can stop trying so hard. so many products are just straight scams too, like freckle pencils, literally just use a toothpick, water and some dark eyeshadow, it doesn’t take that much creativity, brands have just worked SO hard to make us their slaves that we can’t think anymore, and we’re convinced we’re all ugly and can fix it if we finally find the right combo of products. or even if we’re still ugly we’ll feel better if we have the same stuff as the skinny photoshopped girl on instagram. they’re making us feel insecure so we’ll buy more and more of their garbage. sadly happiness doesn’t come from owning things, fitting in, or being beautiful. society has made it so those things help tho lol
The amount of makeup I have now after decluttering can fit in a mini makeup bag now

All these “hauls” (cosmetics, skincare, clothes - and the worst possible, the popular “shein hauls” 🤢) are just glamorized hoarding behavior.
Plus, there is NO WAY that a person can finish all these products before their expiration. It’s pure waste.
I also 💯 agree with you.
Most of these small sized makeup and skin care packaging are not recyclable, especially in the US. They just go to landfill. That $30 lip gloss we only used once is going there as well 😭
It's my waste
Well with all the clothes haul I wear them to school
True and unhealthy 😢
@@estherkasozi4202 The planet is dying, Esther.
I’ve always wondered this. Most products have a shelf life and I get wanting to try new things but I wonder if people are wearing expired/old products.
I do :)
I am sure they are using old makeup…. If you are not a MUA and have a lot of clients you don’t need that much. This greed has to stop
I agree. I have like 5 lips in rotation (I use all of them). I also use eyeshadow a lot! So I have 3 palettes that get used.
In fact they encourage people to shop their stash to get a look similar to the one they created.
this is why i try to buy travel sizes! i can barely use them up before expiration especially super pigmented stuff, let alone full sizes
This. Love this. This is what we should aim for. The joy from enjoying our shit
I reduced my makeup to a travel bag and realized that’s all I need. Everything else I rarely touch.
Normalize buying new makeup only when you've used the whole thing.
@@menthol1234agreed personally I will never allow someone to influence me if it doesn’t bring value to my life.
What’s comical is that make up expires and becomes not safe to use yet it doesn’t seem to be reflected in peoples large quantities of makeup in their collection 😅
They have a expiration date but most products don't really expire. Exceptions may be mascara.
I'm late to seeing this reel & comment but YES!!! This is so true!
Makeup is my hobby so I don’t mind buying new things. But I mainly focus on eye and lip products because that’s where I get to be artistic. My other products are pretty bare bones. 1 concealer, 1 foundation, 2 blushes

its so bleak women unironically say beauty standards are their hobby. we are so doomed
You must’ve been packing that stuff ON
Totally, and then you’re like “I’ll keep it, maybe I can use it as a blush” but then you never do. 😂

1. You can't return used products.
2. They're liquid lipsticks, and I have no siblings to give them to.
I rotate through them weekly, so everything gets used regularly.
this.
I like the ones where you can build your own palette and replace individual pans
Totally agree!! I’m guilty of indulging my daughter but I did the simple MATH of what I’ve bought her through these years…..ugghh! Told her I won’t buy new stuff until it’s all used up for that category. No one needs 6 foundations and 10 blushes!
I don't think it's six products but it's not this much either
I believe it’s people who enjoy make up that Often have lots of make up. If you’re doing simple looks like yours everyday that makes sense to not have very nmuch make up!
This not only applies to makeup but also to clothes, shoes and handbags. We're all way over-consuming and should start thinking more about sustainability.
You don’t need multiple Chanel or Hermes bags either but…
If this is the video I'm thinking of, the original video creator put out a response and said there is more to what is said here.
Yep, I think she's got it easy. Just wait till she gets old person skin and needs to find a primer that actually works for her.
This. If I like art, are you going to tell me to only have six supplies? Makeup is a craft or art. No need to buy the whole store but some of us want more to create more.
@@NibblesandNails this!!!! i LOVE makeup as an art form
I own a lot of makeup and i use it even after it is expired. 🤷🏼♀️ Nothing is going to waste 😊
Yep, people buy a lot of stuff BUT different strokes for different folks...its none of anyone's business how much people buy. My MIL owns 2 pair of shoes. She would say make up is not necessary and no one needs any.
overconsumption is killing us all
I agree. However I must confess I have more than 6 because I'm still searching for the right colors for me and I have made several mistakes!
Totally fine ❤
I own more than 6, but it’s so much better having it all easily fit in one drawer. Even people who say it’s their job will do declutters with a grimace and then go right back to buying 20 new products every month.
Saying people only need six products because of how you like to wear your makeup is beyond daft. Some people believe you need 0 makeup items, some say 3, and some say 15. If you are using the makeup… then that’s the amount you need. If your not using it, it’s excessive.
Yes! I am all for pushing back against mindless consumerism, but that doesn’t mean everyone has to aim for the exact same number of products!
Perfectly put.

I was too 2 years ago. But now I only have one small pallete and two singles and it's more than enough. So freeing.
These 6 products you have don't cover not even half of the more important parts of my everyday makeup
i agree with ur sentiment bc i too use more than six products, but “NEED”? be for real 😭
Overconsumption is a problem, but 6 products be for real.
i can kind of understand buying multiple of products like lipsticks or eyeshadows, if you want different colors. what i don't understand is why people would buy a hundred different variations of foundation and concealers. why would you need that much?
What about your clothing tho
No blush ? No concealer ?
Well she has nice skin so maybe she can get away without it. I on the other hand need both of those things 😂
Actually it was thanks to TH-cam that I learned the magic of blush and concealer.

Tiktok 2024: "First impressions - Go buy this right now!"
wow, thanks mom.
I agree, I mean I like variety but this normalization of mindlessly mass collecting is wild
TikTok is like a Overconsumption Capital, with fast fashion and aesthetics being more popular than quality items and personal lifestyle.
Perfect if you never do creative makeup
I agree that no one needs as much as the first clip, but 6 products are definitely not enough unless you want to look the exact same everyday 😐
It’s so much plastic this is not good for anyone, make up brands should make refillable boxes
In other shorts you’ve bought very high-end products - H, LV. How many of those do you Really need? Zero.
My mom said I'm a hoarder for lipstick and I have 6 for different color and texture 😂 she will faint if she look at this
You think nobody should get to enjoy using blush or bronzer or eye shadows just because you only need 6 products for this basic look...???
You don't need to horde makeup products I achieve this look with just six different products. Did you run this by anybody?
Honestly i only really see the point in having multiples of lipstick and maybe eyesgadow if they're small pallets
Nah i need like 3 shades of concealers and foundation to match my various shades of brown skin through the year. Thankfully it lasts me years
My makeup bag is basically the size of the classic men’s shaving kit.
Ehhhhh not when you’re doing art on your face. Then you need a hell of a lot more than just 6. I get what you’re saying though ✨
Jesus loves everyone!!💝✝️😝✝️✝️
For me is because the products I bought perform badly on me so I still try to find the perfect one 😢 though its not that much like in those video. But for a normal person, i have quite a lot of them.
I think that's what she also don't mention. We have a lot of makeup because buying it won't warranty that it will work for us and even if it does our skin changes so it might work when it's dry but not in a sunny day.
I think I tend to keep a lot of makeup a long time at a fear that I won't be able to restock due to money especially in this economy. 😢
And still not as much as the top one percent
One year, one sephora haul and ONLY during year end deals. Then im set for the year. 😅
Of course you are always right. Everyone should follow you. Everyone should just use 6 products.
😬
We need more of this pls
*laughs in makeup artist*
No lash curler please. It’s damaging to your eyelashes. If you’re using mascara, which is wet, it defeats the purpose of lash curler anyway. So why bother.
Tbh unless your eyelashes are weak on their own, eye curler won't hurt them much. I been using it for over 10 years and I still have beautiful eyelashes and will still loose like 4 of them a day using it and or not. Personally I like that they fall when I'm curling them and in front of the mirror than in the middle of my day when they can fall on my eyes.
‘A regular person’ 😂
we're just plebs!!!
@@itsyagirlvicku to be fair I take her point and love the info on brands and garments so I’m nit picking
I agree that we have too many products, in many different categories. However, make up brings me so much joy and only having six products would make me very unhappy. I wear something different on my eyes almost every day. I would become bored. But that doesn’t mean I need every palette out there. It is good to be aware of not buying too much.
