    Hey y'all, I'm Meagan. My husband Andy and I grew up in rural NC and as newlyweds, decided we wanted something more than the typical American lifestyle. So we started growing our own food, I learned to can and so started this passion of food preservation and knowing where our food comes from.
    Even though we grew up around this lifestyle, we still had to learn for ourselves, the ways of our ancestors before us. We now grow a huge portion of our food, including our own meat.
    High society and MSM want you to think you don't have time to grow, preserve and cook your own food from scratch, but I am here to help you along the way. As a working mother of 2 on a busy little farm, there is time, we just have to prioritize it.
    Through my weekly videos, I'll show you how to prepare easy meals cooked from scratch, tips on preserving your garden harvest and the occasional farm video. Live life on YOUR terms

    I love your videos! I live on 1 and half acre in East Tennessee and do a lot of the same only on a smaller scale. Only chickens and rabbits. I have 7 children with two grown. I know I can’t grow enough and I only started gardening last year but it was way more productive than I ever expected. I’ve heard yarrow stops or slows bleeding. I was told to pinch it off and chew it up then place on cut. Not sure I’d chew it because bacteria in saliva but you get the idea. Love and prayers!

    Nice garlic!!! This year I’m making my garden bigger so we have to till it, but I’m going to try the method of not tilling starting next year!

    Love it you and Andy have it well planned out. If you plant comfrey around the trees with the daffodils, I think that's a nitrogen fixer too. Those areas are in good eye sight. Yes daffodils keeps the deer away and voles. I started a food forest where I planted garden last year. Going to do the strawberries and herbs I think in there. It looks great . Yeah bad weather is coming in the Carolinas but I don't think SC should get snow unless the cold is here before the rain. Look forward to seeing all things grow. Have a blessed day thank you for sharing. 🌹❤️🙏

    Upside is as a landscaper do your front your garden to produce food, encourage pollinators, as well as creative curb appeal. Then sell that service to clients for a good fee. Many people want to do that and have no idea how to set it up and get it started!!!!

    I'm not planting garlic in late fall anymore. We got to -8° last winter and I lost all my garlic. So much for warmer winter in NW Arkansas.

    Oh Meagan, how beautiful the farm looks all coming into bloom!! The Bradford Pear tree it gorgeous, oh how I do NC. Though it's grand to be back home with family. Love to see that smile of yours in the morning while eating my french toast 😊❤ As an after thought, I was wondering if you've ever considered raising honey bees?

      I would love to raise honey bees one of these days, we have talked about it a couple times, but never took the step to setting them up. Thanks for watching!

    IMO and experience no till gardening is useless and you actually end up having to do more work for smaller harvest.
    I'll keep tilling my plot because it fluffs the soil allowing the roots to expand as far as they want/need to.
    Tilling also allows you to get amendments deeper and more evenly throughout your garden, thus negating the possibility of burning the roots

    Ya'll are working 2 full time jobs on tbe farm let alone workin off the farm. You have built a complete farm. Slow down and enjoy it a bit.
    55 gal of deisel or more and a hand pump will save you as much as it costs to run get diesel every week or two. Other than that, slow down a bit and enjoy that farm.

    Everything looks beautiful there! By the way, do you use yarrow for something? I would also like to know what kind of wood Andy uses for the raised beds?

    • @TrueGritAppalachianWays
      @TrueGritAppalachianWays  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We use white oak boards that he cuts with his saw mill, its more rot resistant than pine and should last us a few years since it isn't treated. Yarrow is good to stop bleeding and also can be made into a tea to help with fever and cold symptoms. Thanks for watching!

    Hi

    I just love you guys!
    Our land here in east-central WV looks similar to yours and we have very few flat spaces. We live on a small parcel of land, but I still understand the idea of zoning and having some everyday things near to the house/kitchen. We're adding a few large raised beds in our 'yard' and devoting the in-ground garden to larger crops like potatoes, sweet corn, etc.
    I want to add a few additional fruit trees/bushes and herbal perennials this year if I can talk my husband into it. lol ("I'll have to MOW around it!!" -- Mr. Rough-Hewn).
    Do you guys have any wild yarrow growing on your land? When I first began learning about herbs I bought 4 plants and when it grew up I realized that we have it growing everywhere. I love that you guys are interested in herbs for food and medicine!!
    We've been the same with winter and very cold weather--had one real cold spell around Christmas and the rest of the winter has been mild with not a lot of snow.
    It makes sense about the pigs liking the comfrey. It's deep rooted and "mines" up minerals from deep within the soil. Comfrey leaves or a tea made from the leaves (put some in a bucket with a tight lid and allow it to steep outside (stinks!), then use the liquid on plants--makes a great fertilizer for the same reason. Comfrey is great for sprains, strains, bruises, and even the faster healing of broken bones (after the doc sets it). I keep comfrey poultices in baggies in the freezer. Never use comfrey on puncture wounds though because it will heal the skin over the wound, trapping any debris inside--which will cause abscess.
    You guys are a wealth of knowledge and such nice folks. Thanks for all that you share!

      Thank you so much!! And yes like you said after I realized what it was it does grow wild in some areas around here!

    Question? I have a blueberry bush that I planted in my garden when I started my raised bed s indeed to move. When is a good time to move it?

    • @TrueGritAppalachianWays
      @TrueGritAppalachianWays  ปีที่แล้ว

      The best time to move is during the winter while the plant is dormant, I hope it works out good for you!
