This is probably the least awkward interview with Rivers in the 90s. Seems like there was actually good chemistry between the interviewer and Rivers unlike tons of other interviews from that time
Interesting, you can clearly see the creative differences between Matt and Rivers. Still miss him as part of weezer, though. I've never really been a fan on Scott, but at least Brian and Pat never left.
Is it just me or did Matt say that Rivers is full of shit when Rivers says he has a weak personality and isnt a glory seeker? Check it at 2:23. Sounds like a lot of tension between the two of them there.
TheCloudsandTheSkies Yeah, I think there was. In this video Matt alludes that didn't like the low-key promotion of Pinkerton with the low concept videos to "El Scorcho" and the "Good Life". He says in this interview that he wanted Spike Jones to direct their videos for this album, which I would have wanted as well since Spike offered a pretty crazy concept video (similar to his directed work for "Undone" and "Buddy Holly". I think Matt loves the weird concept videos and approach to promoting their albums, he used the same technique the introduce us to his side project The Rentals. I think River's subdued aesthetic for Pinkerton just rubbed Matt the wrong way and came off as pretentious to him as his attitude towards River's conversation with the interviewer makes it pretty clear. Hopefully, they've put this behind them...
+Kevin Breaux yeah, it's been years. they've definitely made up. In fact, all the band members of Weezer went to his Rivers wedding including former band members Matt Sharp and Jason Cropper, the rhythm guitarist before Brian Bell, they all went. Except Mikey Welsh, think he had some psychological issues. Hut yeah they've made up.
@@CornDogAnimations replying to your comment on my three year old comment to say, I've watched videos of Brian playing, and he is definitely George Harrison reincarnated
What wonderfully educated questions you would never hear a kid ask a question about a cord or song structure and to be honest most of these artists these days wouldn’t know about it anyway
I must comment and say that when the kids got to ask a ? that it was by far the most intelligent ? I've ever seen asked by an audience member to a musician, in fact anyone... is it really that intellectual, no. However from what I've seen in the past by comparison it's off the charts, it immediately segued my mind into the cementation that the 90s, and it would stand 60s and 70s, but most defintally the 90s were better than the 00s like I always have stated. Aka it made me feel good, real good~
There's a lot of honest humanity here. Rivers was resting in unknowing at this time. I respect him for being able to say he doesn't really know what to do...
Just Allegro No yeah, I think it was Brian, because he’s definitely the one who announces pink triangle, and the person who announced pink triangle also sounds exactly like the person who made the major 7th joke. It also sounds like Brian was laughing during the question was said, and after Rivers’ response.
@kevintarzandotier I'm a bit in the dark with this whole record label thing, are they actually ending with Geffen?? If so do you know why?? Thanks in advance mate.
Good song, but feels awkward seeing it performed live Lyrics just a bit too personal and specific to say in front of others for me, but their choice lol
how was the question dumb? all he said was "hey you use 7th chords a lot, is that intentional or do you just like the sound?" That's not a dumb question, many bands write by ear and don't exactly know every bit of theory there is out there. Rivers answer was more dumb than the question, "power chords are boring so i use notes that are out" well the notes aren't out, they're just a wider interval. Rivers wasn't very deep into his music theory at this point.
@@AnotherWorldYT Not true, he was actually very proficient with music theory. Check out the book 'at rivers edge'. He was way more adept than what his answer is implying. I think he simplified his reasoning, if he nerded out like he wanted to it would go over everyone else's heads due to the esoteric nature of the topic.
I kept waiting to see which part, 1,2 or 3, would have any of the “good” Weezer songs in it… The answer, turns out, is NONE OF THEM. Man what a bummer! Woulda been so amazing! This coulda been such a cool show with a better set list…
As soon as that dude asked the question about chords, Rivers got really excited.

These are probably some of the best questions I’ve heard an artist asked by an audience. Great interview and great album.

Whether you like Blue or Pinkerton more, I think most can agree that Pinkerton translates to acoustic better
