    American update for Mary:
    American police and justice system are divided between local, county, state and federal. US Marshal would have jurisdiction in a fugitive situation especially if there was inter-state possibilities. Local police typically do not like interference by FBI, ATF, SECRET SERVICE, MARSHAL, etc.
    Wyatt Earp is famous town Marshal, movie Tombstone is one of hundreds. He was made into a U.S. Marshal and hunted down a group of infamous criminals across several states. Remembered most for the Shootout at the O K Corral.
    Chicago dyes it’s river green on St. Patrick’s Day and has a huge drunken parade.

    • @hkpew
      @hkpew ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This is all correct, just want to expand a little. In most countries the equivalent of the US Marshal would probably outrank any local police with no questions asked. But because the US is a federal system with responsibilities apportioned between the sovereign States and the Federal government by the US constitution there are many circumstances in which the US Marshal, FBI agent, ATF agent, etc. really wouldn't have jurisdiction over local police. (At least in theory. In practice I think the federal courts have found reasons to expand the federal police power far beyond what a simple reading of the constitution would imply. But there are still limits.) That's not even considering jurisdictional questions between city or town, county, and state police agencies. But while there is plenty of room for arguments over jurisdiction and I don't doubt those arguments happen sometimes, I suspect that the movies exaggerate the frequency and degree to which these arguments occur. The agencies involved generally know what the score is, and under most circumstances the local police aren't going to complain about getting access to the additional resources the federal agencies have. I expect most of the time federal involvement starts when the local police request it.
      On the other hand, the situation at the end of this movie where the local police believe they are trying to capture someone who killed a member of their own force is definitely a case where such an argument might occur. (This movie implies that the locals actually plan to just gun him down on sight, something else that has happened but the movies probably exaggerate how frequent it is.)

    There are so many things that help make this movie work. Tommy Lee Jones being one of the biggest ones but also the musical score, the fact that Julianne Moore’s role (one of her first film roles) was edited correctly and not turned into a romantic connection with Kimball like originally planned, and other details that make it flow so smoothly.

    Your instinct about the female doctor played by Julanne Moore was correct. Orginally she was supposed to play a larger role as a love interest. That storyline was dropped because A. They felt there was already so much story going on and B. Adding a new love interest so soon after his wife was murdered took away from how torn up he was supposed to be and be in such a loving relationship with his wife. And it threw a lot of people since she was a pretty big name actress for a small passing role.

    Hi Mary! Greetings from Chicago! Great reaction! It's important to remember, film directors love to exaggerate and mischaracterize. It's a major device to add tension to a movie. It can easily leave viewers with the mistaken impression that most U.S. cops would rather shoot Dr. Kimball on sight, no questions asked, than interview eye-witnesses to discover he wasn't the one that shot the officer on the train. And with respect to arguments over jurisdiction, Hans Pew in the comment below correctly states, "under most circumstances the local police aren't going to complain about getting access to the additional resources the federal agencies have. I expect most of the time federal involvement starts when the local police request it." However, if everyone in the film acted rationally, there would be no movie, so the film creators would rather make it look like everyone in any position of authority in the U.S. is incompetent, deaf, dumb, and blind. It gets a little tiring to be honest.

    You clearly haven't seen enough Tommy Lee Jones, so I recommend you watch the sci-fi action/comedy franchise Men in Black that pairs him with Will Smith:
    - Men in Black (1997)
    - Men in Black II (2002)
    - Men in Black 3 (2012)

    "The Fugitive" was a TV show before this movie remake. The Fugitive TV show inspired the Hulk TV show. Then the Hulk TV show inspired the Hulk movie. SO! If Richard Kimble and Bruce Banner being on the run seem similar, it's no coincidence. There's a chain of evolution there.

    This one has a very high re-watchability factor. You'll catch a little more each time, as the details are all there in plain sight. I also highly recommend "Tombstone" (1993), starring Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, and Michael Biehn (and a host of other great actors and actresses!) It takes a few creative liberties, but it's a very fun film that really embodies the best of the American Western genre

  • @IDLERACER
    @IDLERACER ปีที่แล้ว +1

    😎👍 This is one of those movies that absolutely couldn't have been made only 15 years later. The plot revolves so much around phone booths and being able to put a trace on people via land lines in general. A couple of decades after it was made, payphones had pretty much completely disappeared from the American landscape. This was one of a few action oriented movies that Harrison Ford made in the early 1990s, including "Patriot Games" (1992) and "Clear And Present Danger" (1994).

  • @bigdream_dreambig
    @bigdream_dreambig ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You ask about Harrison Ford being "hot." I don't think that's it. I think many leading actors may be slightly above average in physical attractiveness (e.g. a mostly symmetrical face without unsightly scars, blemishes, or deformities), but what really pushes them over the top is their charisma -- what talent scouts sometimes call "the 'it' factor" or "star power."

    Kimble was cuffed at the end because he was still a convicted murderer and a fugitive; there is still considerable process involved in cleaning that up. But that also makes Gerard uncuffing him (probably for the ride) a bigger show of respect, because Gerard is nothing if not by the book.

    I'll be curious what you think of Harrison Ford after Apocalypse Now.
    This movie makes me sad for a forgone era. This is one of those midrange cost movies that Hollywood doesn't make anymore. They still make the low budget and they make the big box office busters but the middle range movies not so much. And these middle range movies were usually the best ones.

    16:00 He's not obstructing justice, he told them what happened. By giving Kimble money he might be considered "aiding and abetting", but that is usually in reference to a crime in progress I believe and this was after the conviction. "harboring a fugitive" would be if he gave him shelter. He's rich as well, so harder to prosecute.

    Chicagoans particularly enjoy this movie for its use of actual Chicago news reporters in those roles in the movie. Harrison Ford is a Chicago native, too, so I'm sure it was kind of cool for him to film The Fugitive back in his hometown.

    When the film came out I was fortunate enough to attend a screening where the director spoke and answered questions about the film (God, I love living in a college town!). Among other things he talked about how they wrecked an actual locomotive in the derailment scene (which is apparently still there to be seen in the wilds of North Carolina), and how he went to all of the locations including the hotel at the end, to map out the course of the chase scene. And yes, Chicago does dye the river green every St. Patrick's day. Those Irish!
