The reason Phil Collins mentioned that there was no Fairlight CMI used on the album was because, at the time, the Fairlight was ubiquitous and used practically everywhere. It was one of the first samplers and entire songs (popular ones) used nothing but the Fairlight. There's a very famous orchestral hit sample that if you were to hear it today, you could immediately recognize as part of many songs of the day. Phil wanted to highlight that the strings and horns on the album were not created with a Fairlight. Technically speaking though, Phil did indirectly use the Fairlight on the album because he sampled a sound from another source which itself was taken from a Fairlight.

Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush both had the Fairlight. In fact, Running Up That Hill is entirely Fairlight CMI. People focus too much on the tools and not the process.

This sort of brings me back to 1986ish when you could pick up pretty much anything Atari related for like a buck because nobody wanted to maintain stock of it. So I bought all of the ridiculous and cloyingly awful Atari LPs, knowing perfectly well, even as a kid, that they were going to be bad. I really had no idea: The Yars' Revenge LP had a theme song on it, sung through a vocoder, while the literal 4-beat rhythm from the cheapest Casio keyboard you could buy played as the song's percussion. I know it was the cheapest Casio keyboard *because I had owned the thing for years.* A tiny, white thing that was barely over a foot long. They used that darn keyboard for the percussion!!

4:27 - I think it's more of a German _typo_ thing. (The German word for _catfish_ is _Wels_ and not even close to the English one.)
21:10 - We even had a TV show called _Telespiele_ (the _e_ just denotes the plural form) where people could call in and then play _Pong_ against the host. You can find episodes of it on TH-cam if you search for "Telespiele Thomas Gottschalk".

Thanks for the information about the television show. Looked it up despite not knowing German and found it a great watch. I used auto translated subtitles as an aid. The whole idea is crazy because you're dealing with so many delays between phone lines and transmission. Split second reactions appeared to matter.

I am in no way affilliated by the creator, I live on the other side of the world. But the pure fact that someone writes a high level programming language, a compiler, a sprite editror and a ~400 pages manual all by himself - using pen and paper while sitting in a hospital waiting för cancer treatmen... That's insane. And the result is marvellous, at least by my standards.

There was a band called Kft (means Ltd in Hungarian) who released an album in 1984 called Bál az operában (Ball in the Opera) with a Basic program printed on the cover. Originally the plan was that they would include the program on the vinyl record making a real multimedia disc. But since they have never made something like this before at the Hungarian Record Factory they had to change the original plan and print the text on the cover instead of recording the program on the disc.

I tried scaling it since it seems the track was in NTSC and I have pal. Didn't work.
My last guess is something I read that the problem may be that I am using a modern stereo tape deck to copy it to cassette. Maybe the C64 can't read tapes that were written by a stereo tape deck, even if both left and right tracks are identical.

    • @8_Bit
      @8_Bit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, I've had a lot of problems with using stereo tape decks for data. The datasette expects mono, I believe, which is written as one "fat" track. Stereo tracks are two skinny signals with a gap in between, which a mono tape head is probably "confused" by.

By the way Bing Translate (from Microsoft) translates the German from 19:15 as:
"The definitive telegame Escape to the Front can be found at the end of the next -LP- from Escape to the Front"
I don't speak any German so I can't tell if this is a good translation (and it is different from the translations you gave...) but I guess it is an alternative translation.
It's interesting that there was no game on their next LP, like you said they could be liars, or incompetent, or it could be a prank. Maybe the game had to get cut for some reason? I can imagine after you saying that the LP with the Easter Egg on had no locked groove, (which would have prevented the C64 data playback for people just wanting to listen to the music), that they got some complaints from people having their ears hurt by hearing the C64 data as audio, especially if they had the volume turned up! I can also imagine at least someone out there was scared by the noise of the data and probably complained angrily!

"Flucht nach vorn" actually is an idiom. It comes, if I remember this correctly, from the Prussian military language, although it's not used in military context anymore. I believe the closest translation that catches its meaning would be "forward defence". So, if you're defending your position by attacking an opponent in an argument, because you are with your back to the wall, that would be coined as "die Flucht nach vorn antreten" ("kicking into forward defence"). Another term for that is "Vorwärtsverteidigung", which is the literal translation of "forward defence".

You recorded the audio onto tape and then loaded it from there. There was a flexidisc on the cover of a UK mag called C&VG which had a free Thompson Twins adventure game which you were supposed to record onto tape and then load in.

Codemasters did release a compilation CD of a lot of their games for the C64 which came with a cable that connected to the joystick port. You loaded in a short program from tape and then loaded the games from CD via the joystick port. A strange idea to use the joystick port but I guess they couldn't get it to load from CD via a tape port device or it just was cheaper to use the same joystick cable for all systems.

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention recording to tape in this video. I covered it more thoroughly in some of the previous data-on-vinyl videos (playlist link in the video description).

@@6581punk - Yes I've heard of that compilation - there were a couple and for various systems too - although I wasn't aware the C64 version used an adapter in the joystick port, I wonder why? perhaps it was for commonality with the port - seems reasonable enough unless the joystick port somehow offered a higher bandwidth
