Latvian Golden Eagles ~ Spilve Brings In Small Bird! Klints SWALLOWS It Whole! 6.24.20

- Spilve arrives to the nest with a small bird and Klints mantles and claims it! Klints keeps his mantle over the prey - Spilve wanted to feed him but at this stage Klints was determined to self feed. Spilve departs up the branch and Klints figures out the best way to eat the prey is just to swallow it whole! Klints is 45 days old and will be learning how to stand and tear at the prey in the next couple of weeks. Thank you for watching!

Virsis, a Golden Eagle male, and Spilve, a newly-mature Golden Eagle female, breed in their artificial nest, which was installed in 2010. Most recently the eagles successfully breed here in 2016. The nest is located in a bog on an island managed by the Latvian State Forests. Last year a female (Spilve) appeared regularly but she was too young to breed. For 2020, Spilve laid two eggs - on March 28th and April 1st. Egg #1 is non viable & egg #2 hatched on May 10, 2020.

Beautiful mantling by Klints and he devoured that small bird so fast! Hopefully, more deliveries will come, soon! I think it can be difficult at times for Spilve and Virsis to hunt for their prey as fish is not a food source for them. Parents need to eat, too! Great scaps...thank you Lady Hawk:)
I think so SoCal Eagle! It is really unusual to not see any fish on this GE nest as we are so used to seeing fish as the primary source for the bald eagles!! And tell that to Mom Decorah with her trout hatchery!! lol Let's hope for more food to come in tomorrow for Klints! He is growing up fast!!
@@ladyhawk Hi Lady Hawk...lol with Mom D trout hatchery which is so true! I learned real quick that fish is not GE source of food, here. I thought it was because there was no river near Klints nest lol. Thank you Lady Hawk:)

I'm happy to see that Spilve's foot seems to be better. It's always a little sad when mom brings the food and wants to feed her child, but the child wants to be independent and feed himself. Poor Spilve flew away a bit disappointed, I'm sure! Her baby is growing up
Wow! Klints must have been very hungry, he didn't want to take the time to be fed by Mom or tear off little pieces himself. He just swallowed it whole like Owls do.
This is very interesting. Klints of course was more than ready to get that crop refilled. Spilve seems to want to stay with Klints or help feed. She moves around the nest either attempting to assist or almost to be between Klints and the edge of the nest (or both). She does observe and wait to see that Klints has taken charge before she flies off. I enjoyed watching the teamwork of Virsis and Spilve, and hope he's ok. Klints has a great feistiness 😀💕🦅
Yes that is a good observation! She wanted to feed Klints but at this stage with his aggression and mantling she opted to just leave and let him self feed. The other day Virsis brought in a large bird and it was too much for Klints so Spilve fed him several times. The little birds he can eat and swallow whole but still is too young to stand and tear larger prey! Thanks for watching!!
