When you say he was getting a train, I'd always thought, as he said he was going to the Greyhound station, that he was getting on a long distance bus back to Texas? I'm not American so I could be wrong. This song contains what I think is one of the best lines ever written- 'I'm going to build myself a castle of memories just to have somewhere to go'. Such a sad line. Is he expressing loneliness and/or thinking of better times in a place that he's now leaving? My take on it is that he is going back to somewhere he knows and feels comfortable with where he knows the people and places. He's been somewhere else and for whatever reason - probably love gone wrong as most songs are - needs to go back to a safe place, lick his wounds, get back into shape and discover himself again. Then he'll be ready for what life throws at him next. I also like the line that he'll find the lady with two or three kids and sit down by her side. Let's be honest you're not really going to choose to sit next to her on a long bus journey are you? So why does he? I think he needs the social interaction; to chat and mix with someone new. He'll learn her story and tell her his.
Pigeons will naturally eat clay from "clay licks" at the side of rivers, to protect against stomach infections and to get certain minerals. So it's another therapeutic line.
Most of the time, Blaze had no money or place to live, but he could write and sing. I visited his grave recently, and there was an interesting collection of offerings on his grave as a tribute to this magnificent singer/songwriter that left us too soon.
Blaze's life was tragic,he was just starting to get noticed,Merle Haggard recorded a blaze song If I could Only Fly,then Blaze was shot and killed trying to help a friend.Acouple years ago a movie was made on his life called Blaze,check it out good movie.He was kindof a different sort,but wrote some good songs

Story: When blaze was young his dad was abusive to him and his mom. So his mom knew day said that's enough and left them. After that he lived in a house with his wife playing gutair fingure picking, His wife said "Blaze you should show people your music and that's what he did he lived on the streets. He was a very nice guy that's the way he died. He hung out with this guy at the bar and this kid of the person who blaze hanged out with. The kid was a drug addict so he always went to the person for drugs and balze said "no get out of here" trying to save his life. The kid came back the next day shot him. Whne he died he always wore duck tape suits so he was buried and his friend was looking for his gutair since he had a setificit for the gutair so someone who finds it will own it so they dug up blaze they checked his pockets and the card was it his pockets.
