- Ben Verlander welcomes Atlanta Braves' legend John Smoltz back to Flippin' Bats for another edition of 'Saturdays with John Smoltz'. Ben and Smoltz debate whether Shohei Ohtani can win MVP as a DH for the Los Angeles Dodgers or if the Cincinnati Reds’ Elly De La Cruz can steal his way there. They then discuss what the best offseason trade was and which division races are already look like they will come down to the wire.

Will Shohei Ohtani become the first DH to win an MVP?
The odds are against it, but if anyone could do it as a dh, it'd be Shohei. Essentially racking up WAR with one arm tied behind his back so to speak.
Stacked team,
Naw he sucks
It is quite possible. There really is no facet of the game from an offensive standpoint that Ohtani can't do well. Hits for power, average, drives in runs, gets on base, and steals bases. Sure that he could even play the outfield if need be.
I am really worried about Shohei's recent batting. No, homeruns since May 18th. Three time triple crown Japanese batting legned Hiromitsu Ochiai points out that Shohei's strong rotation of hip swings which produces enormous power then produces homeruns gradually fading. He is not sure it is because Shohei has pain in his back or his focus on higher average. In any case, Shohei won't hit as many homeruns as the last year, Ochiai says. What do you thinki, Ben? I really would like to see the best of him in June, hit 20 homeruns this year!
I did think ohtani will be mvp. But he is on a slump lately. Slump by his standard
6-15,1-9. Dodgers look great😂😢😅
1-9, the last 2 games
😂😅😢
Go Rangers, world Champions 🎉
2-8 in their last 10 games.
The Rangers currently have more losses than every team in the American League not named the White Sox, Angels, or A's!
how can a 250 batting avg be MVP?
A .250 AVG, .805 OPS, and 5.5 WAR, won't get it done for Elly. I don't see him as being in the conversation unless his production trends considerably upward.
Love the show,
But definitely tired of hearing about shohei,
The MLB has other stars, lot more
I agree .. they need to talk about my boys Pete Alonso and Joey Gallo more
@@anthonyfam5469 Also has 0.5 war with a 0.795 OPS, lil buddy.....he's not doing anything right now.
