      @@keithmorrison8373I'm sure it wasn't intentional. There just happened to be an ambulance passing by while Isaac was making his songs. But it makes me wonder; Did he hear sirens often? Just sitting in his room playing guitar, when the outside world crept in? Was it a rare occurrence that meant someone he knew had died or was in critical condition? Or was he already close enough to the city that had moved to him that he was endured to it at this point and just accepted it? Did he leave it in there because it was significant to him? It all hits so close to home.

    There's just something about these songs. I listened to this and got a strange warm feeling I haven't got since I was a kid. I honestly forgot about how it felt until now, and can barely describe it. I felt lost, yet innocent. Almost like being comforted by a mother. Like it's too late to play but too early for bed, and I'm just checking in on the rest of my family while wearing long sleeve pajamas because there's nothing else to do. Almost like one of those moments when you were a kid, and wished you were a baby again. Alright, I've rambled long enough.

      Dare I assume you were? Is that like a form of gatekeeping? The album is the album, no matter how old you are. Age can change your appreciation of music with experience, but this album was recorded in a freaking microwave. There's a lot of beauty here, but if Isaac could get around to restructuring and releasing this stuff like Car Seat Headrest did with Twin Fantasy, that would be great. I'm a big fan of Modest Mouse and Ugly Casanova, and would love to hear a remaster of this album that doesn't sound like it were digested and crapped out.

    • @gabrielrichmond2047

      I personally get annoyed with overproduced album. Stuff like this is just brutal sonic honesty (getting it up tot he quality of sad sappy sucker wouldn't upset me, but i enjoy hearing this as is)

    I've been a Modest Mouse fan for almost 15 years and never knew this existed haha. Isaac's leap from this and Sad Sappy Sucker just to This Is Long Drive is awesome. I feel like they eclipsed with The Moon And Antarctica, then have been at the same level since then. Obviously being on a major label like Epic, plus Isaac wanting to make more accessible music has kept them from making long, trippy-like songs, and Isaac probably doesn't do drugs anymore and is older/more grounded.

    • @matthewsullivan5671
      @matthewsullivan5671 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ground Walks with Time in a Box is long, trippy, and accessible.
      Isaac still does drugs.
      He is grounded, however. Truly, in The Moon and Antarctica he took the essence of Modest Mouse and created a masterpiece. You'll notice a lot of the lyrics are taken directly from previous songs.
      The reason they're still at the same level is because Isaac is waiting for the rest of us to catch up. If you listen to and understand the lyrics in Strangers to Ourselves, they are just as meaningful as anything else he's done.

    • @Phobia963
      @Phobia963 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Strangers to Ourselves is actually quickly rising in the ranks of my favorite Modest Mouse albums; it has a lot of amazing songs and is very well orchestrated. Sure, it isn't the same as their previous stuff, but that's a good thing. Any band that doesn't evolve (change) will die, just as it is with any language, or human for that matter. Things do not exist in vacuums, they must be a part of what is around them in order to work.

    • @JAGNFL
      @JAGNFL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Phobia963 Some bands evolve in a great way and get even better, not simply just changing their style. The Beatles and Fugazi are perfect examples of bands getting better and better with each album. However, in my opinion, Modest Mouse hasn't really evolved artistically, if anything they've taken a step back, at least in the musical aspect. To me they peaked with The Moon & Antarctica (which I agree is a masterpiece and my favorite of their albums) and while Good News and We Were Dead were great, but overall they started declining creatively after Good News. Although, their EP No One's First and You're next was fantastic, and I'm sad they didn't decide to include King Rat and The Whale Song on those two LPs. Anyway, I respect our opinion, but has Strangers to Ourselves really become one of your top 3 MM albums? I don't think their first 3 albums could ever be bested by their later 3. But that's just my humble opinion. Moon & Antarctica, The Lonesome Crowded West, and This Is a Long Drive got me through some of the worst years of my life during Freshman and Sophomore years of high school (when my best friend committed suicide.) And while most of those earlier songs (like Custom Concern) were incredibly melancholic, they had a certain happy/sad tone (like the song Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset, which they're so good at singing depressing lyrics using happy major chords.) I'll forever be grateful for them helping me grow up and they'll always be my top 3 favorite bands, even if I don't like their latest stuff. Cheers to being another fan like me!

    • @Phobia963
      @Phobia963 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JJ I'd actually say that the three most recent albums (Good News, We Were Dead, and Strangers) are my top three favorite Modest Mouse albums, and all have my most of my favorite songs as well. Perhaps it is just a difference in opinion; from your clues in your reply, you are a solid decade older than me at least, so maybe we just got attached to the music that we grew up with. All I would like to leave you with is maybe the idea to give the newer stuff a try. I really, really love their old music; The Fruit That Ate Itself (both the song itself and the whole EP) is fucking amazing, and Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks would beat Good News on my list if it were to include the EP's. All I want is for you to have that appreciation for the new stuff. It's different, I know, and I can see how at first you might want to dismiss it, but I'm telling you, as one fan to another, they're really, truly good.

    • @Phobia963
      @Phobia963 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, on a different note, I can't accept your example of The Beatles as a good example of a good band evolving because I hate the damn Beatles! Haha

It's a dude in shed with a 10 inch amp and a drum machine or just a snare drum. i find it really hard to believe anyone finds this inspirational. now, when it comes to inspiration we can talk all day about building something out of nothing or lonesome crowded west. shit, even moon and antarctica but dont tell me you're driving around in your car listening to this... i dont belive you for a second and if true, get me the fuck out fo your car.
