One of the Best Shipwrecks - SS President Coolidge, Vanuatu

⚓️Considered by many divers to be the best wreck dive in the world, the SS President Coolidge was 198m luxury passenger liner converted to a troop carrier during WWII. While entering the Santo harbor she was hit by 2 friendly mines in October 26, 1942
⚓️She rests in 20-72m of water at Espiritu Santo Island of Vanuatu
⚓️You can swim through the numerous holds and decks viewing the reminders of her glorious days as a cruise liner and the remnants of her days as a troop ship. There are guns, cannons, jeeps, helmets, trucks and personal supplies left by some of the soldiers, as well as the beautiful porcelain statue of “The Lady,”
⚓️The Lady is the one treasure that every diver wants to see. The Lady is an old bas-relief statue of a lady riding a unicorn with a long-flowing tail. She’s wearing a pink and gold dress with a wide white ruff framing her delicate features.
⚓️The Lady was once in the ship’s first-class smoking room, but after a fall, she was moved to a safer position in the dining room and fixed securely to a wall at the far end of the room. She sits at depth of 39 m
⚓️According to the official report, Coolidge was carrying approximately 5,000 army and navy troops and 12,000 tons of government cargo - including trucks, jeeps, artillery guns, ammunition and 519 pounds of quinine
⚓️There were only two casualties in the sinking. The first was Fireman Robert Reid, who was working in the engine room and was killed by the first mine blast. The second, Captain Elwood Joseph Euart, 103rd Field Artillery Regiment, had safely left President Coolidge when he heard that there were still men in the infirmary who could not get out. He returned through one of the sea doors, successfully rescued the men, but was then unable to escape himself and went down with the ship.
⚓️We did 10 dives on the wreck, and it still was not enough to see everything, it is really spectacular dive site
