The FIFTY - 39/50 - What the F#$* is an Uber Tour?

- Sometimes the crux of a line is just figuring out what the line is. Such is the nature of "The Uber Tour", a line that is listed in the The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America but nobody seems to know what exactly it is. Piecing together the description in the book as best as possible, The FIFTY sets out on a link up of the N Face of Mt. Rogers and the absolutely classic NE Face of Swiss Peaks. Facing the challenges of timing the Winter Permit openings in Glacier National Park with the right conditions, along with a long, complex and big day to link up two steep lines in the Roger's Pass vicinity, the crew go for what could be one uber of a tour.
Co-Starring Greg Hill and Emma Patterson

Thanks. Going to get a christmas present for a friend at 20% off.
@codytownsend. Thought I'd let you know this video isn't linked to The Fifty website and the line is missing its check mark! Anyway, this is my favorite series on TH-cam, really inspirational stuff. Thanks so much for the effort and entertainment. Hope our paths cross in the Sierras some day.
I think the fine print for selecting the 50 ski lines for the book must have included "Some portion of the tour must absolutely suck." That was an epic exit line!
I agree. It makes for quite the memorable adventure that's for sure.
And one in 7 must require a bare foot river crossing.
Never heard Bergschrund said out loud in my life before and then here we are two episodes in a row.
I didnt know un until last episode that its the same word like in german. I thougt you woulde defenitly have another word for that. hahaha
Same - LOL
It's common in my circles to just say 'schrund.
Whenever I see the first person POV GoPro footage during a line I always think "Oh that doesn't look so steep." Then a shot like 6:45 happens and you really get a sense of how steep it really is. Wild.
From now on, every time Im sitting in a chair-lift watching someone struggling below. Im gonna yell "ADVENTURE ISNT OVER TILL YOU ARE AT THE CAR BUDD, HAVNT YOU WATCHED ENOUGH OF THE FIFTY"
can't believe that's not a meme yet
We need a t-shirt with this slogan for merchandise. It's a life philosophy.
@@sba4636 Agreed! That would be a great shirt
One of my fave episodes! Quick rip up, great skiing and then a hilarious trek back to the car
Cheers. Thank you.
Yay! Wednesday! Thank you for your videos Cody and Bjarne, they bring so much joy. You have lit a spark in me, this winter we will go to a forest with my assistance dog and nordic ski a hill..or maybe more like a little bump on the ground. And boil some good coffee. Lots of love from Finland
Thank you Elska.
I only discovered The Fifty Project a few weeks ago so I’ve been binge watching them. Now I’m up to date and have to wait for the next one I feel there’s a huge void in my life!
Thanks Lee. More coming soon.
Love it!
You Guys should hook up with Nikolai Schirmer and Antti Autti for a Line - that would result in some insane content😎🤩
One day I hope to make that happen
This would be a dream
this is taking exiting out of an uber to a whole nother level
ha ha ha
Nice!
The top lines had me grinning, then I saw the jumbled melt-freeze…
But the end turned out to be every bit a enjoyable.
Thanks Cody and team, always the best 1/4 hour on TH-cam.
I'm sure Hilaree will agree the inspiration goes both ways Cody. Thank you for another awesome vid
Man, the storytelling on this one is great! Loved seeing you guys work your way out of the line. Great work!
Only one missed opportunity I see here. Using some Swizz Beatz music in the episode.
Another great one.
Nice one guys! That exposure in the canyon was super sketchy looking
Yeah, it was and wasn't. Low probability high consequence terrain.
You rock Cody!! The 50 project has been very cool to follow and I love your realistic light-hearted uphill commentary, combined with your skillful descent skills ;) Some seriously deadly lines remain- NF of Robson… St Elias round 2… I wish you the best of luck, send safe dude! If you’re skiing Rogers be broad and say the Selkirks or something, save our sacred Canadian gem!! Much love, respect, and stay safe Cody, looking forward to more of the 50!!
“Adventure skiing with exposureeee” hahaha
That exit looks like hell. Kudos Alka.
Cody and Bjarne so stoked on this project. You inspired me to get a ski touring setup and hit some lines this season. I've played in the Backcountry for years on snowmachines and snowboarded resorts as a kid, but now I'm going to be skinning it in Valdez thanks to the fifty.
Hell yeah, the sled accessed ski touring in Valdez may be the best in the world.
And again, wow. Great to see how much fun it was! And it is not over till you are at the car. Haven’t you watched the 50😂
”There’s a lot of glory and then there isn’t” *battling a tree branch* 😂
39/50 already! You have come so far. I dont want this series to end!
I was gonna comment that this line was awesome and didn’t even have a heinous bushwhack. That was before the last 4 minutes lol
Love the outtro. Captures the essence of any great spring tour
Am I the only one who thought he was going back up over the cliff to get momentum to jump?
Great crew for this video as usual. Lots of laughter.
Cody. Thanks for keeping it “real”. Many trips have their “grunge” moments. It’s not all pow.
best ski series on the web by far. thanks cody!
Another great adventure. And it was great to see good snow conditions again for The descent. As you might have guessed, I had to watch Giant Steps first, in order to psych up for this feature.
meeting Harry in Skookum, what a day for you!
Love the scratchy gnarlies, with dulcet tones of deck lounging en Saas-Fee.
great episode. That ski out at the end was GNARLY
amazing tour, cool crew. thanks for sharing these videos
Our pleasure!
Thanks for the ride, Cody!!!
Spring Missions! It's not over till you are back at the car ! ;)
Wouldn't hurt to tie in a prusik for rappelling, just in case.
Great video!
I love the idea of a "classic" ski line that nobody's ever heard of
Funny enough, it ended up being one of the best lines of the project.
@@CodyTownsend Have you already finished skiing down every run of the 50?
Keep watching and you’ll find out
Yikers, I was tired just watching it on the tube ! what a ski
Amazing scenery 😍 You guys are crazy, I envy you on skill and these adventures! Going to ski center must be so boring for you 😂😂
That schwack out was by far the sketchiest part!
Another great episode. Nice rappel in!
The green pyramid edit had me rolling 🤣
Definitely had flashbacks of the Stand By Me train track scene there lol
So epic, love it. Thanks for making these and inspiring new filmmakers like myself. Stoked about planning adventures for 2023
Holy shit she's a pocket rocket. Good crew, good, lines, great snow, what more? Nothing. Bravo.
Buenos días Cody...... great video as always!! greetings from Chile
Grivel Scream is a new belay device rated for 5-8 mm ropes. I just got one to use with my Mammut Glacier Cord. While you are shopping get the Magic Ring by Grivel. Its a cool prusik back up for small ropes.
Back to back amazing lines, amazing episodes. You guys are crushing it this season!!! Can't wait to binge watch all 50 to celebrate your EPIC accomplishment.
I love this series. Really.
Thank you Woody
This is the Stony Creek rail bridge
I have been across it many times and it is beautiful
Good thing you guys didn’t walk over the tracks😂 Straight to jail!
In Europe we call that Agro-ski 😂😂
When you end up skiing half grass, a bit of mud, way many rocks and little snow...
I'm so amazed not just by your ability to do the 50 classic descents but IN ORDER! Just 11 more!
You definitely earned your beers after that exit!! Ha!
The Canadian Pacific Railway runs through Glacier National Park. For legal and safety reasons, the public is not permitted within 16 metres of the train tracks or other Canadian Pacific property, such as tunnels, bridges and train yards. (Copy and pasted from the parks Canada website, just so people know to not go that close to the tracks)
Exactly. Why we emphasized it a couple of times in the episode.
@@CodyTownsend Thanks for emphasizing this! Folks should never be within the track limits because a train could come from any direction at any time and will not be able to stop.
@@thrillhouse6646 "...a train could come from any direction..."
But most likely from up the track. Or down the track.
I mean, if need be I'd rather cross the tracks then risk some scatchy climbing around them. In the end just use your brains and everybody should be just fine :)
I mean go for it if you want, but know that both the railway and the National Park keep a close close eye on it and can serve out heavy fines. Enough people have been caught that it's definitely not worth it.
13:20: "The maps says there is an exit". Yeah, about that. Not the first time a similar thing happened to me, although at a much lower scale...
Hey side note. The straw foot covers create a layer of ice on the inside of your window and that moisture drips down in to your dash. I had a couple modules go out on my van and strawfoot gave me a refund. Don’t want ya messing up your rig!
It's weird to see Revelstoke with so little snow in town, at least comparing to when I was there. Roger's pass is Nirvana
Edit: it's always sketchy to combine backcountry skiing with canyoneering.
First tour in RP. Haha. Excellent.. even all legal like
another great video
12:45 when you're sponsored for skis and DGAF lol
SO GOOD.
Regarding the rappel anchor, I noticed you said "donate a locker"… What's the protocol here insofar as LNT?
Pretty much all climbing anchors are generally in the exempt and/or in a gray are of LNT ethics. They are safety devices for moving through mountains so have a sort of different categorization of 'things left behind'. In ethical terms, you should minimize amount of material left behind, clean old material left behind and try to put them in less obvious (but safe) places.
@@CodyTownsend Word, thanks for the insight!
Love it.😊
Is Cody wearing the MTN summit boot here??
Looks like incredibly steep and consequential terrain for that light boot!!
Very inpressed he can ski these lines in that gear.
To be fair, cody can ski these lines in red wings duct taped to 1x4's so its not that much of a stretch
@@SNiiPEDoGG Fair. . . Just interesting. Getting up to Mt. Rogers/Swiss is big, but not crazy big.
BUT like Cody's said - Having a child really impacted his fitness.
Looks like Greg Hill is wearing the Salomon S/Lab MTN boots.
Hi Cody, I have really enjoyed your 50 series. Outstanding project. I noticed you were on a pair of Salomon skis this trip. If you don't mind sharing the info, what length, width and model are they? Good luck with the rest of the project and I am looking forward to the videos. Cheers, Jack
Info on that ski will be coming out in the next few months. Been something I've been helping test and design with @salomon
@@CodyTownsend Thanks, I'll look for it.
6:46 thats steep!😀
Definitely the best answer came from the dog...
All climbers cringing at how they casually decided to rap with a non locking biner.
Word of the episode: spicy
Rappelling on a rad line with an atc and one biner? Everywhere I've read that won't be enough friction, or are you using the alpine atc?
Cody, I'm sure there's no short answer for this, but how do you personally train for huge days like this and others? I think the people (a.k.a. me) would appreciate a training vid :)
Well last year I didn't do shit. Having a kid zapped just about any energy and time to train...hence why I'm so far back from Greg and Emma, who are both beasts. But this year...well maybe one day I should do a video about it.
@@CodyTownsend Yes please !
@@CodyTownsend I would love to see your training routine and even possibly a test. Like : If you can complete this work-out, you *could technically* be able to tag along with us.
The camera does not due justice to actually how steep it but still make me pucker looking down!
I wonder if the Uber your is the tour between Whistler and Blackcomb. Either way, another amazing video from you and the team Cody, yewww
So good, thanks.
Thank you too!
Am I mistaken, or is this the first video in The Fifty where ski crampons are used?
Shit. Maybe.
I think I recall them using crampons for Mt Washington, NH. Which would make sense since New England is generally an ice cap unless getting a fresh powder dump.
Adventure skiing 🤣
From 14:00 on is what 90% of touring in the north east looks like
Cody- I think it was on the Blister pod you said something to the affect that lines are almost never steeper than 45 degrees. How does this align with this video showing the pitch as 45-55 degrees? Was it truly that steep or does this pertain to adding to the "feel" of the line for the audience.
Yeah, this was 45-55. For broad pitch, it was somewhere between 45-50. It was legit very steep.
BJARNE IS THE GOAT!!!
I really thought that dog had the answer
Me too.
Now everyone knows the Uber Tour!
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE ROGERS PASS !!!
hahaha I didn't know you can't cross the rail lines. Good to know
Cody you should have been asking people in Golden what the Uber tour is there’s a lot of people here who could answer
how many miles are on that van by now :p
Only about 25k
The book seems to have a very loose definition of classic. A route that no one has ever heard of? A couloir that had never been skied before? Oh yeah, total classics!
Oh that couloir had definitely been skied before. In fact, Greg Hill has the first descent on it. The NE Face of Swiss is definitely a classic. One of the better lines I've skied honestly.
@@CodyTownsend I wrongly assumed the authors were part of the group that had skied it. Classic implies some level of lasting popularity. Call it a remarkable line or a hidden gem, I just don't think "classic" is the right word for a line that only 3 groups have attempted, especially when two of those groups did it because of the book. Not a critique of the lines themselves!
Like I said, NE face of Swiss is a classic in exactly that sense. It's one of the most sought after great lines in the Selkirks. The "Uber Tour" is just kind of something the author of the blurb made up for the book I'd guess. But that author is MIA, so know one really knows what he was thinking of with putting it in there. Regardless, even if the Uber Tour is a mystery, it brings you to ski the NE Face of Swiss. So it's sort of accomplishes the intended goal...but just in a round about way.
What happened to the music this season?
Could use some color grading Cody. Just another reason you should hire me
I guess I’m slightly confused how there’s a classic in the book with no description or information of any kind?
There is a lot of description in the book... but it's all a bit confusing in reality. There is way more too it but most off, what is described in the book is something that doesn't make sense, no one really goes for and from my research, doesn't seem to have ever been done before. So we did our own version.
@@CodyTownsend Follow up question: How can something be a classic if it's never been done??
Yeah, well that's a question for the authors...but all things said, though the "Uber Tour" may not be a thing, the NE Face of Swiss is most definitely one of the most sought after lines in the Selkirks. Its one of the better lines of the project imho. So to me, it ended up all working out.
So sick!!! 🎉
Need more Bjarne content plzz
39!! I"m going to be so disappointed when this series ends...
Hey Cody come get some real face shots in the Wasatch!
9:24 no like. Right side looks like it could skate right off. Obviously worked just fine. My spider senses went off is all.
Can you eleborate on this? Looks fine to me, but always happy to learn.
@@brunospasta My bad typo in original comment. Was referring to the rappel anchor shown at 9:24. Obviously from the brief glance we get we don't have all the facts - I just noted my own reaction to how it looked.
“Lean back.”
Where’s the Moonswatch?
Nah. This classifies as a classic fifty’s line.
I mean I guess the Uber tour is a thing now
Perhaps...we will see. It's a bad ass combo of lines that's for sure.
Looked fun except the sketch bush wacking. But made it back in one piece guys and girl.
@@CodyTownsend well it must be a thing, the legendary duo Bjarne Salén and Cody Townsend (and friends) did it. It’s the path they took 😝
Never knew you english speaking guys use "Bergschrund" as well...🤣
SWATCH gave him a million dollars to always wear that hat. They are all real controlled on those steeps. It's no joke up there.
If Swatch gave me a million dollars, that shit would be tattooed on my forehead.
