I need someway to speak with you 😭. I just shifted from India to US as a sophomore in high school, I was not allowed any AP classes for my sophomore year. I am currently in Indiana, but will move to Chicago shortly. It is my dream to get into a top tier college (well more of my mother's dream but at one point it became my dream), but all the stuff here is overwhelming me. Back in India, to get into the top colleges you just needed to do good on this really really really really really really hard test (SAT is a joke compared to it), but the route is pretty straightforward, you just have to study harder than ever. But here there are so many different factors man 😭

Damn this is crazy. How did you get to do so much? I’m looking to apply to some US schools (from the UK) and I am just completely shocked at the level of extracurricular work US students put in. It is strange the different ways that UK unis prefer lots of subject specific stuff plus just grades

yeah i've lived in the U.S. my whole life and basically everyone who does extracurriculars has a higher chance of getting scholarships, admissions to colleges they prefer, etc. Personally, I don't do extracurriculars, lol. Something other than extracurriculars you can do that can help you be seen on college applications could be community service if extracurriculars are not preferable to you. You can also try and keep good grades and get a good SAT/ACT score, but it's usually not really the ONLY thing colleges look at. My advice would just be to do something else that makes you more "seen" if it's not extracurriculars

It is really interesting to note this young man seemed to not mention one extra curricular activity which made an impact on his community or those around him on a personal level. The activities were so centered on his accomplishments rather than connecting with others. This creates real life experiences which few young graduates have right out of high school. Kudos for him on his hard work! We can teach young kids theoretical stuff but when it comes to compassion, grace and giving of ourselves to others; this cannot be learned as easily.
