    I don't know if they have ever been published in english, but the first 10 or so Tintin adventures were originally published in black and white. In the late 40's early 50's when the stories were now published in the Tintin magazine and studio Hergé was founded the books were now made in the colour. Every black and white stories (except for Land of the Soviets) were then remade in Hergé's more polished style and small changes were made by Hergé to stories like Congo to make them a bit more politically correct.
    For example, in the original Congo story, Tintin's class to the kids in the mission is a History course about their "fatherland Belgium". The colour edition change this to a mathematics lesson.
    Hergé was deeply ashamed by his inacurate and paternalistic early books. It wasn't until the fifth book (The Blue Lotus)that he started to actively research the countries he would sent Tintin, instead of simply listening to his boss and mentor, the priest Norbert Wallez. Wallez was an ultraconservative fascist who was acquainted with Mussolini and collaborated with the Nazis during the Belgian occupation. He wanted Tintin's adventure to be right wing propaganda.

      Fantastic information, thanks so much. Really looking forward to the later stories in the series which are, as you say, far more accurate.👍

      For sure. It's been so long since I read these, I'm approaching them with an open mind. It's good to have a little back story of Herge for when they were published and I'll touch in this throughout. I'm sort of researching as I go.

    The first book I ever bought (or was given) prior to school was "The Black Island". I remember lovingly studying the pictures and then eventually reading it. I still have it! It has my name written in it that I did with a shaky hand when I was 6. What great memories.

    I have such a soft spot for these books, as dated as they are. I'm Canadian and I went to an all-French school in the early 90's until 2001 and we had the entire series in French in the school's library. I read them over and over. 15 years later I was working at Nelvana who made the 90's animated adaptation and a co-worker who had worked on it gave me a couple of pieces of production art.

    Thank you . I empathize with you in the intro , some of the stuff is not politically correct...and the art work depecting the natives.....my gosh. Never the less.. from what i have seen on your channel..i can say " the views in this comic are Not those of the reviewer " and this reader..I find many of my childhood writers are now under ' attack ' from Lofting to Blyton and even Twin.Yet i say...true or false...dont hide those books away. Thanks again Sir. What is interesting is how as the stories grows not only is the art work..but the views . This we will see in the later books...i can hardly await . Ps on a side note Mr H was not the only artist to depict... some people in that way. This was a fine vid.Thanks again a third time..

    Very good analysis of Tintin's first three books. You show what's interesting and beautiful in these books and I think that makes people who don't know Tintin want to read them. On the other hand you could have perhaps said that the first versions of Tintin in The Congo and Tintin in America were in black and white and that they are quite different from the color versions. But to introduce Tintin, your video is excellent. 👏

    Thanks so much for this Jules. I've been a big Tintin fan since childhood and own all his adventures in one form or another, and I also own the excellent 90's animation series by Nelvana on DVD. With regards how some of his early adventures are viewed today, I agree that Tintin in the Congo has some distasteful parts, almost comically so, but I maintain that Tintin in the Land of the Soviets is still a pretty damn accurate observation of the sheer hypocrisy and horror that is life in a communist country.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John, appreciate those comments. I too enjoy those 90's animation films, they were really well done.
      Soviets is a great story and was accurate for when it was written . Congo, yes, it has its moments but these are soon forgotten as we move through the story. Glad you're enjoying these, the next three books are on the radar.🙂

      I think there was one of the Tintin stage plays that involved Casablanca, maybe "Mr Boullock's Disappearance" from 1941? But I don't know of a ship of that name, unless it was in one of the foreign language translations (not French or English) of the books.
