  • The first of two book haul videos from recent day-trips. This one showing what I picked up in Faversham. Science Fiction (naturally) and also some Penguin Mysteries, westerns for June on the Range, trash for Garbaugust, and ending with a special accidental find from a recent online purchase.

By the sounds of it, 'Don't, Mr Disraeli' sounds a bit like 'The Pyrates' and 'The Reavers' by George MacDonald Fraser.

Just looked up "The Pyrates" - sounds like fun, another to keep a look out for, thanks!

Couldn't you find a copy of Arden of Faversham while you were there?

I do have that on Kindle, but not read it yet. Any good, and do you have a suspicion of who wrote it?

@@GenreBooks23 Sorry for the late reply but I wanted to re-read Arden since I had read it so long ago. It's the best example we have of a "domestic tragedy", so it's interesting from that point of view. I'd say it was competently written but the characters have to chop and change their attitudes according to the plot. I think the most effective part of the play is the episodes with the hired killers. These are clearly written for laughs. The repetition of their failed attempts then makes the actual killing all the more dreadful.
Shakespeare, Marlowe and Kyd have been mentioned as possible authors, but I plump for the prolific "Anonymous." I don't find any Marlovian style characteristics and we have so few examples from Kyd that I don't think you can throw him into the mix. The scenes with the villains reminded me of the scenes with Falstaff's cronies in Henry IV Parts 1-2 and the scenes where Harry's men are talking among themselves in Henry V. And of course, The Merry Wives of Windsor.
The problem is, however, that these are much later plays and it's suggested that Arden was written sometime after 1587 and before 1592. Shakespeare had written the Henry VI plays, Two Gentlemen of Verona and Titus Andronicus by 1592. None of them have examples similar to Arden. Shakespeare is fascinated with word play, and there's nothing like that either.

@@katjack2780 I’m going to have to get hold of this. I’ve read my Shakespeare, but not much of what was contemporary to it..
