I WILL ADD LINKS TO PRE-ORDER ONCE THE KIT IS ANNOUNCED BY AMT AND ROUND2MODELS
The Volkswagen Golf Mk1 is the first generation of a small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen. It was noteworthy for signalling Volkswagen's shift of its major car lines from rear-wheel drive and rear-mounted air-cooled engines to front-wheel drive with front-mounted, water-cooled engines that were often transversely-mounted.
Successor to Volkswagen's Beetle, the first generation Golf debuted in Europe in May 1974 with styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign.
Due to the negative political reaction to the 1973 release of the Beetle "Gelb-Schwarzer Renner" ("GSR", or "Yellow-Black Racer"), Volkswagen had little inclination to develop a faster Golf.[33]
VW Press Department head Anton Konrad and VW engineer Alfons Löwenberg began development of a high-performance "Sport Golf" as a skunkworks project rather than as an official factory program.[34] The two were joined by Gunter Kühl from the Press department, suspension expert Herbert Schuster, Hermann Hablitzel, who smuggled parts from the project into regular tests, Jürgen Adler, whose chassis analysis led to additional reinforcements, Horst-Dieter Schwittlinsky from the marketing department who coined the "GTI" acronym, and Franz Hauk, developer of the EA827 engine.[35]
A prototype was built based on a Scirocco, rather than a Golf.[36] This proof-of-concept had an EA827 engine with dual carburetors and a lowered and stiffened suspension. When this prototype was driven by Volkswagen's Chief of Research Ernst Fiala, he objected to the harsh suspension and excessive noise from the intake system and declared the car "undriveable".[37]
The ad-hoc development team arranged to use the fuel-injected version of the EA827 engine that had been developed for the new Audi 80 GTE.[35] That engine's Bosch K-Jetronic system reduced intake noise and raised power output.
The car's name is typically described as an acronym of either the Italian phrase "Gran Turismo Iniezione", or the English "Grand Tourer Injection", and is usually written in all capitals.[38][39]
The GTI was presented to Volkswagen's management early in 1975, and the project was approved 28 May 1975.[35]
At this point a ninth person joined the original eight-member GTI team. Working under Chief designer Herbert Schäfer, Gunhild Liljequist was tasked with creating a set of features that would set the GTI's interior apart from the normal Golf. Her contributions included the bright Tartan plaid upholstery, and the dimpled golf ball-like gearshift knob.[35]
The Golf GTI debuted in March 1975 at the Frankfurt Motor Show,[40] and wasn't unveiled until the autumn of 1976. [41]
Production was not expected to exceed 5000 units, which was the number needed to qualify for the Group One Production Touring Car class.[42][43]
In addition to the modifications already mentioned, the GTI was distinguished from the stock Golf by external changes that included black-plastic wheel arch extensions to cover the 175/70HR13 tires on 5.5Jx13 wheels fitted, a larger front spoiler, a matte-black frame around the backlite and a red frame for the grille.[36] Ride height was reduced by 15 mm (0.6 in), and the standard car's solid front brake discs were replaced with 9.4 in (239 mm) ventilated discs. Anti-roll bars were also fitted front and rear.
The engine in the early GTIs had a bore x stroke of 79.5 mm × 80 mm (3.13 in × 3.15 in) that displaced 1,588 cc (1.6 L; 96.9 cu in).[44] The compression ratio had been raised to 9.5:1.[44]:57 This resulted in an engine that produced 110 PS (108 hp; 81 kW) at 6,100 rpm and 140 N⋅m (103 lbf⋅ft) at 5,000 rpm.[45] This was mated to a close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission.
With a curb weight of 810 kg (1,786 lb), the GTI could accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 9.2 seconds. Top speed was 182 km/h (113.1 mph).[46]
In August 1979 a 5-speed manual transmission became standard.
In 1982 the engine's bore and stroke were enlarged to 81 and 86.4 millimetres respectively, which resulted in a total displacement of 1,781 cc (108.7 cu in). Compression had also been increased to 10.0:1. Power rose to 112 PS (110.5 hp) at 5,800 rpm, and torque to 153 N⋅m (112.8 ft⋅lb) at 3,500 rpm.[47]
The GTI appeared on the British market in 1977 as a special order only in left-hand drive form. A factory right-hand drive version finally became available in July 1979, priced at £4705.[48] The Rabbit GTI did not arrive in the United States until the 1983 model year.
The 1976 Volkswagen Golf GTI is considered by many to be the archetypal "hot hatch",[48] a class of sporty small cars popular in the 1970s and early 1980s, although cars of a generally similar concept, such as the 1967 Simca 1100 Ti and the 1971 Autobianchi A112 Abarth had appeared earlier.[48]
In 2004, Sports Car International declared the Golf Mk1 GTI to be the 3rd best car of the 1980s.

Chris, these were very important cars in the history of the automobile. VW invented the "hot hatch" category with this car! To this day any kind of sporty hatchback, including cars like the Mazda 3, can trace their lineage and beginnings to this '78 Golf GTI Rabbit. It's a classic!

SOO EXCITED that some of these older kits are finally being revived and hopefully updating and fixing known problems. Such an amazing time for modeling right now and yeah some times its annoying that some kits are out of stock because modeling has gotten soo popular but then I think to myself that it's a great thing that these things are flying off the shelf because it pushes the industry to bring some of the older kits back. SOO IT'S A GREAT TIME FOR MODELING

While I don't have experience with the GTI trim/performance level, my grandfather had more than 6 different late 70s Rabbits (him, grandma, and 5 of the kids that were still at home on the farm). Most were the diesel models, but one or two were gas engine.
The interiors in all of them were black vinyl. Some had carpet in red or brown. Door panels, seats, and dash were all black. There was some plastic and rubber, but it was also black.

I was managing a VW Dealership when the GTI was released - could NOT keep them in stock. Worse, VW only allocated a FEW to each dealer. There was a LOT of telephone "horse trading" between dealers to get "...just one more GTI." Buyers willingly forked over extra bucks to get one. Crazy. That's advertising. Nice looking model. As to the details, I was too busy running the business to even stop and look PLUS they flew off the lot. Those were the days - everyone was happy (memories can be ANYTHING you want).

Chris, from what I remember, granted little kid remembering, these were not fancy cars. Volkswagen "people's car" was basic and affordable. I don't remember any fancy stuff on the ones my friend's parents had. Maybe a silver window crank, but everything else was black. Big difference from the American cars of the 50s - early 70s. Great work on the kit. Keep it going.

My little brother had a VW Rabbit, probably about the same year as this one but his had a little diesel in it, really small diesel! It ran good most of the time except it had a overcharging problem, we never could figure out what was causing it to do that! But anyways, I used to borrow it from him quite a bit, to go back and forth from Ky to Ohio, and like I said it would run like a “Wabbit”, lol! Anyhow, good job there buddy, as always! 👍👍✌🏻!

The Golf GTi was released in 1981 and never available in yellow in Europe. The US Rabbit version may have been. Only when the Mk 2 Golf GTi was introduced did the full colour palette become available. European interiors were predominantly black with red pinstriping to the door trims and seats. Bumpers and grille also had red pinstriping which became iconic and carried on all GTi models since.

    • @paredding
      @paredding 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes - red pinstripe on the grill was de rigeur. Nice job on the wheels but the plastic arches need to be a flattened black, semi flat/satin as they were palstic and sat slightlightly off the vertical so on the production build you may want to mask it with Tamiya tape...tricky but worth it. I also hope they include a good decal for the instrument binnacle as that had satin silver finish.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

The decals I show do have nice options, two I think.

You know, VW Golfs painted in yellow were a very common sight in the 80s in every german town. Yellow is the color of german mail ('Deutsche Post') and they used Golfs for package delivery etc. Of course these weren't GTIs, the engines were probably more from the opposit end of the line.
So, having a yellow Golf GTI mark I is funny thing on its own. A bit of an understatement here.

Ok as a VW man that golf or rabbit as you call them in the US they had plain black brown, tan, blue, cream interior no chrome as most of it was plastic the higher range gti's had plaid interior in the seats and door trim (door card) as the us calls them. These trims were a sport package not all had them this being a single head light version no spot lights they were plain this was the first fast 4 banger at the time even though they were slow lol

I just to work in them, easy to get to everything. I don't remember ever seeing a woody. Most were red and some yellows. Interior was black, if memory serves me some had cloth inserts on the seats and door panels. They even made a pickup truck and called it a Sport truck.

Chris, do a Google photo search of Rabbit or Golf Mark 1 GTI interiors. I found lots of good photos. I got better results this way as opposed to searching by the year. By the look of it, Round Two should add plaid seat insert decals. Lots of plaid in those photos.

The US version of that generation of Rabbit (and GTI I think) was built at a plant 2 miles from where I lived in southwestern PA. They were built there until the late 80s. The plant was originally built for Chrysler in the early 70s but that fell through.

Hoping the trademarks go through on this, now I admit I do have the Revell Germany version of this kit but it’s very much more complicated and I’m sure it’s more expensive over what Round 2 will charge and I won’t touch it until I get more experience building but this one looks good and I’m going to do this one first.

    Looks real.
I noticed you painted a tinted sun shade onto the windshield. Did you just mask it and spray it or how did you achieve that look? I’ll be building a Lamborghini Countach and I noticed the real thing has one of those, so I want to add that. I want to do it right.
Thanks for sharing your professional tips and creating empowering videos that get the viewer to believe we can do this too, if we want. I like that you do practical things that don’t overwhelm someone who is thinking of trying this. Some other channels do great builds, too, but they can seem overwhelming and make it look more difficult than it needs to be.

These are still quite common to see here in the UK, even the early mk1's. Not sure if the American version had it but the UK GTI had a black surround around the rear window, red pin stripe around the grill and I think Pirelli P slot alloy wheels, though the wheels might be a later addition.
