    Nice piece on the nanoHD.
    After years of suffering poor Wi-Fi around the house, battling with extenders and power-lines, I made the decision to install a UniFi system last year (Cloud Key Gen2+, 8 Port PoE switch, 2 x AC-Lite AP's and 2 x UVC G3 cameras). From day 1 I have not had any issues in any area inside and out of the house. Can 100% recommend these products.

    The comparison between the Unifi device and a traditional home WiFi router (Netgear Nighthawk) was brilliant. Having been an IT tech 25 years ago and no longer on the IT "front lines," the comparison helped put the features of the Unifi device into perspective. I also appreciate the quick, no-bs, fact-based detail provided throughout the entire video. Kudos & thank you!

    Good presentation. I moved over to Ubiquiti 2 years ago and run a AP Lite & nanoHD now with a airMAX AC gen2 bridge between the main house and a remote studio/shop that was impractical to run a wire to. The shop AP Lite never has drops and delivers about 200 Mbps to my ISP across the AC bridge which is plenty good for web browsing, playing Spotify & TH-cam music/videos. Very solid system. I did diverge from Unify to add a pfSense firewall for its superb QOS and firewall protections. We have negligible or no LTE signals so depend on WIFI calling and the Unify system delivers this professionally and we even are about to hold calls between buildings that are 100' apart even with metal walls! One thing not mentioned in the review is that the nanoHD performance at a distance, in my case, about 45' and two interior walls is about triple what a ASUS 68U gave when it stayed connected and double a Unifi AP Pro's speed. We get a very strong connection now across the street through exterior foil insulation, too!

  • @Notsosamurai1
    @Notsosamurai1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just installed one of these. I love it, I went from 130Mbs at most with a cheap tp-link wireless router to around 400Mbs. My cable internet is 400Mbs but I get around 480Mbs on ehternet. Now I get close with wifi.
    The only thing that sucks is the range is not great if you are just using one Nano HD. My house is not that big and I have a few spots where the signal is pretty weak. I will be adding at least 1 more if not 2 just to make sure there are no spots in the house that have a weak signal.

  • @randleqgod
    @randleqgod 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I literally have this thing sitting in a dead spot right now and i'm still getting a good signal lol. This thing is awesome. I bought two today and plan on mounting them in the ceiling on the first and second floors of my house. I shouldn't have ANY wireless issues after that. Thanks for the thorough review.

      @bjornwarloe9419 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess is that the mounting plate for the older larger model is different from the new one so he had to swap things around instead of just being able to upgrade without drilling.

    • @jasongerhard5150
      @jasongerhard5150 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right he didn't explain it. From what I remember you have to have a "key" of some sort that you stick into the side of the AP which lifts a tab and then you twist the AP 30-45 degrees to remove it. On the other ones you would just lift a visible tab and do the same thing. I'm sure the love hate is that you need a "key" to do this but it's much better hidden than others?

    • @hdtvkeith1604
      @hdtvkeith1604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Having just mounted 2, it is a pain to unlock the AP form the plate once mounted. Also since it is a plastic plate if the mounting surface is not perfectly flat getting the AP to lock in the plate is a pain. Even on a reasonable flat surface mounting the AP to the plate is a lot of frustration. Once set up the AP are amazing with speed and coverage.

    Just a heads up on the rPi comment around 3:20 , Ubiquiti does not support all Unifi controller features on ARM based systems like the rPi or similar systems. For features like guest login portals, certain Cloud access tools, and some items in the services tab, You MUST use an x64 based system.
    You will see a message saying "Unifi Cloud Key Required" next to certain features if the system is not fully supported.

    Just installed 4x NanoHD, 1x Mesh and 1x MeshPro in a bar/restaurant in my town to provide free WIFI for the guests, the staff and most important for the handheld cashier wifi devices of the waiters. The staff and people can walk around the whole area including the outdoor space and seamlessly roaming between the accesspoints. Had AP-HDs and PROs before in other installs and tried out the Nanos together with the Woodcase, they are working perfectly. Ok, the 2.4GHz throughput performance is theoretically not as good as on the Pros or HDs, but that doesn‘t matter in this installation. Also most of the time around 50-75 percent of the clients are connected via 5GHz. Conclusion, i love the Nanos. 😀 And UBNT wifi isn‘t always the fastest you can get, but it‘s the quality of the wifi that stands out to me!

    AC? AX or Wi-Fi6 is where it's at, and I wish I had one in my place considering there is so much interference in my neighborhood that I get 600mbps down via Ethernet and like, sparingly 100mbpos down after changing channels, but usually waaaay less. With like 200ms ping and crap. AX is a bit faster but gets rid of the interference issue almost entirely, if not entirely. Looking forward to it being more ubiquitous.

    I have 2 AC Lite APs in my home. They are working great. The only problems I've had is when I try to factory reset it bc i had to reinstall the controller and the backup i had for the controller config got erased. Had to reset it a few times to get it to be recognized by the controller. Other than that I have been really happy with them. I get good speeds and they are so easy to set up.

    I think you may be selling the Nighthawk AC1900 short. According to all the documentation I can find it's an MU-MIMO compatible device, which means it isn't doing single stream. No doubt the NanoHD is a better device as far as customization, but both are MIMO compatible (AC1900 is 3x3 I think).

    • @claytonfalter8062
      @claytonfalter8062 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Compatible is the key word. Like just because most public roads are Ferrari compatible does not mean you can drive full speed. Although would think its at least one radio per band for most upper end wireless routers from the diagrams I remember.

      It mounts securely, but the security tab makes it nearly impossible to remove without scratching your walls or ceiling, if you can even get it to release. I recommend breaking the security tab off the bracket. It still latches tightly, but let's you take the WAP back down if you need to.

    I have a Ubiquiti Unifi AP AC Pro (access point) and I use a phone app to manage it. Here is a weird quirk, when the access point loses connectivity with it's gateway, the wireless radio shuts off. I am trying to understand this behavior and their support keeps asking for statistics they don't need to answer a simple question about why the access point is configured to do this. I am doing testing and losing connectivity just because the gateway goes down is very frustrating. I need to support these APs remotely and this is a huge fail for being able to do this. So the default gateway is connected to the access point on it's wired ethernet port, if the AP can't reach the gateway it immediately turns off the wifi radio and the blue light blinks instead of being on steady. I like the access point but this is a show stopper for me.

    Hi, This device doesn't have 6 different radios as suggested, it does however support MU-MIMO so if as MU-MIMO enabled device connected to the network it means this device can occupy the exact amount of spatial stream instead of the whole radio.
    for example: if you have 4 MU-MIMO enabled devices with 2 spatial stream (almost every smart phones today) in the network, and the radio that you trying to connect to have 4 spatial stream then each device will use two spatial stream and therefore the AP will serve 2 device at any time slot (2 spatial stream for each one of the client device connect to 2 spatial streams on the AP) so the end result will be that each device will use 1/2 of the AP time (in each time slot the AP serve 2 clients out of 4 device in total)
    BTW,
    wifi 6 support OFDMA so each spatial stream can serve multiple clients in the same time slot bringing the AP to act more like switch then HUB

      Or up to 6 continuous 1x1 connections by the standard. The continuous part decreases connection setup overhead and cuts latency. 1x1 connection is fast enough for most video streaming and gaming clients in clean WiFi environment. 1x1 is all that a lot of cheaper tablets and laptops support even today. Smart Phones with MSRP under $100 probably are not MIMO either (e.g. Alcatel 1X). Can't find source info but its possible 6 linear radio circuits (4x5Ghz and 2x2.4Ghz) are cheapest implementation to drive the MIMO beam forming antennas. I believe that was the case for Nighthawk: 1 linear radio per band and then some delay circuits in paths to each antenna for beam forming. But hey its been long time could be wrong.

    • @claytonfalter8062
      @claytonfalter8062 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup natural to expect 802.11ax equipment to be more capable than 802.11ac. Except of course the OFDMA is described as being multiple low-rate connections. So the switch analogy breaks down a bit there. It would be interesting to know how low rate those connections would be in practice. OFDMA documents do note that good web surfing tends to be bursty high speed connections. Also if the no routing function (Ubiquiti Unifi or ad hoc client to client) then a 802.11ac Mesh (especially ad hoc) can also act like switch under some circumstances if correctly managed since its ideally point to point.

  • @pcbona

    Why do people in 2019 still use static IP addresses? On the AP, this is for management only anyway. Apart from controller based funcions like RRM and client roaming, it will still provide wireless connection even if suddenly the DHCP Server does not provide a new IP once the end of the lease time has been reached.

    • @MichaelSmith-fg8xh
      @MichaelSmith-fg8xh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @CraftComputing
      @CraftComputing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The answer is yes, but not very effectively. UniFi works with APs and the server to allow for seamless hand-off. Meaning when your device moves between WAPs, the server allows it to move from one to another with no disruption. Using another AP, with the same SSID and Password, would break that system, and likely cause a number of weird issues. I'd recommend getting UniFi points wherever you need them. The Lite APs are well under $100 and great for home use.

    A lot of wrong information in this video. A stream does not equal a radio. Both the Nighthawk and nanoHD have 2 radios, one for each frequency band. The nanoHD has a 4x4 5GHz radio, and a 2x2 2.4GHz radio. This does give it the capability of 6 concurrent streams because of being a wave 2 device. R7000 has 3x3 on each of it’s frequencies, and while it is limited to 2 concurrent streams being wave 1, is still ha a total of 6 streams as well that can be used for other things (like improved throughput) just not at the same time. While the nanoHD is an enterprise solution suitable for mass deployment in very dense areas , I’m pretty confident it cannot beat the r7000 in throughput to a single client (unless a 4x4 device is used, which is rare) and that is usually preferred in a household
