Really depends, a VR headset is pretty expensive so you would have to be pretty into it for it to be worth it. I would say for most people it wouldn't be worth it tho. But if you feel like it's worth it, then it is for you
I'm going to second Milkman. Totally worth the headset cost. It was literally the first game I purchased/downloaded after I got it connected to Steam. Got it in late April and already have well over 100 hours in the cockpit.
Also, if you don't have the necessary DCS hardware (HOTAS, etc.) you're looking at just as much if not more cost for all of that hardware than you would be looking at for a VR headset. Especially if you wind up going with top of the line Virpil Hardware which will set you back about $1k. Quality rudder pedals can get up to about $500, and you're already well past a Valve Index cost.
I see what you mean about the prices and that they can go up and above a vr headset, but if you're just starting out and not sure if you like the game you can get a thrustmaster beginner hotas for 50-60$ (Tflight hotas X) and you can also play with a controller if you just wanna try it out. I have a friend who plays it on controller.
Here is how I differentiate the two games mentally. When I play VTOL VR I get the feeling of an arcadey flight game where you can just do cool shit with your friends have a bit of fun blowing shit up while having laughs while keeping it semi realistic and having the missions relatively small. When I play DCS I get the feeling of "Oh shit, that's why real fighter pilots need hundreds of flight hours and years of classroom and out of classroom instruction to even be considered combat effective.". That is also the reason why most western air forces would rather loose their planes and equipment than their pilots because they judge their pilots to be more valuable than the planes they fly.
Check out the latest update so. They added electronic warfare and full radar cross section simulation which even DCS doesn't have yet. Of course its not apples to apples comparison but VTOL is getting better and better on realism, but I agree feels more arcade due to the lack of real life systems.
@@uplink44 DCS has some RCS simulation I believe, the EW is very limited in official modules/DLCs because Eagle Dynamics (creators) bases everything they add on official, mostly declasified, information known about the airplanes

VTOL VR imo is for people who want the feeling of being a fighter pilot without the immense amount of knowledge required to actually fly them. The DLC is also reasonably priced so people don’t need to break the bank for a new plane or helicopter. It’s good for people who want a more casual approach to air combat without it being Ace Combat levels of goofy (no shade to Ace Combat tho). It’s also a good gateway drug into more complex aviation games. DCS is for people who really like military aviation, and often have setups (and PCs) specifically built for it. It’s built to be as true to life as possible, to where you need to actually put lots of time and effort into learning how to properly fly the aircraft. The fact it is so complex is also why new aircraft modules are upwards of $100 EACH, making them prohibitively expensive for some and primarily aimed at serious aircraft enthusiasts. That’s the difference in my opinion. VTOL is for new aviation enthusiasts or casual gaming, and DCS is for realism.
100% agree with you, It's nice having a game where you can take your non aviation friends in for some fun time flying while not having them completely clueless about what is happening, while still not being as you said Ace combat or War Thunder
As a 50 year old with decades of experience in the flight sim genre and hundreds of dollars of hotas and flight sim gear, I disagree. VTOL is hands down the better VR experience and in several important way, it’s more realistic and immersive than DCS. The fact that I works immediately with little to no setup and has FULL voice commands for wingmen and ATC right out of the box make it a fantastic overall experience. in DCS world some key thing is always broken and you spend more time setting up and tweaking than you will doing missions. Heaven forbid you try single player only to find the AI is worse than in VTOL.
I also recommend yaw pedals with toe breaks for both games. VTOL offers a much better VR experience but DCS is as close to real life as yu could get, almost to a fault if you're just looking for a quick experience. VTOL is nothing short of amazing, Jetborn Racing is by the same dev and is very fun also.

And they just released a trainer aircraft you can actually use to train new players.
Are you swedish?
you need more subs
vtol vr is the best experience hands down
Thousand plus hour in vtol I can confidently say it is ok
VTOL VR is definetly the better game by miles. DCS is more of a simulation, except crosssextion for some reason.
Your narration volume is really quiet
I know, I will try to do better once I get back into it, appreciate the feedback!

Bro, just press STD HDG button lmao
är du svensk
lol my dcs copy is 410 gigs, vtol vr is much much better for electronic warfare, while dcs excels at the others
VTOL VR = Arcade. Nough said.
dcs is a sim and vtol is a game. simple as that
VTOL is sim lite. Ace combat is a game.
a10 go BBBRBRRRRRRRR
du e svensk jag svär
If you think this is a comparison then stick with vtol or war thunder, you're not ready for dcs lol. What a joke
What ? VTOL VR is totally worth it for just this game alone . Your wrong
thats with a ton of hindsight to most people and entry fee of 330 dollars to play a game they might not lik e can be really unwirth it
Skill issue, I can run dcs vr with a 1070 ti and an i3 12100F🥱
I think it was an issue with steam (Also it was without DLSS and Multithread as they weren't in the game yet), but i switched to standalone and now that sort of performance is what i get in vr with everything maxed out DLSS off (Multithread is however on)
