I helped the developers with this mod. At the time, I was working on a Marine Corp base that has a A-4 on display. They asked if I could take a lot of pictures, especially the gear. The MPs had questions, but didn't stop me from doing so. :D

And you know how I know you're full of it.. No way would you have been left out of any sort of thanks or recognition that you contributed. And your name isn't listed anywhere in the docs for the aircraft. Though they thanked a lot of people for help on it. Checked for all your social names, and real name, in the docs and found no reference to you. Not a single mention of you anywhere. Even after asking the Devs on the forums their was zero reference to you.

DCS is often criticized for being an expensive game to play and there is some merit to the argument when I look around at all the peripherals and modules I have bought over the years. On the other hand, with an old joystick lying around you can download the free client and free A-4E-C mod and have tons and tons of fun. The A-4E-C mod brings DCS to a lot of people that would otherwise not be able to join in.
The brakes don’t work great because the designer knew the aircraft would be stopped by the arresting cable on the aircraft carrier. He was obsessed with keeping the plane as small and lightweight as possible, you don’t need big, heavy breaks if the wire is doing the work for you.

...and I thought it was because the brakes were noy serviced prior to the aircraft being flown.
The brakes work fine in a straight line, what this model hasn't got is nose wheel steering. As stated because of lightness of design, it has differential braking on the rear wheels and it takes some getting used to. Later models had nose wheel steering fitted.
This is a fantastic model of a wonderful little aircraft.
the brakes seem to lock up if you use a button for braking instead of toe brakes. if you use an analog input for braking the a4 steers much easier but most people don't have a dedicated rudder pedals.
Good video. Brake pucks very small. Get hot quickly and lose grip. Spoilers are wired to the squat switch. Don’t want them to deploy in flight . Really don’t want an assymetrical deployment of them in flight.
Former Air Force F-4G Wild Weasel mechanic here. The SEAD (suppression of enemy air defenses) system could lock onto a SAM/AAA radar from just a short moment of that radar transmitting. The system had radar receiving antennas in the nose and tail of the aircraft that would triangulate the location of the offending air defense battery. The WSO (weapons systems officer) could then assign the target to a HARM, launch the weapon, and it would hit the transmitter. While flying Northern and Southern Watch missions over Iraq in the mid nineties, Iraqi air defenses would not operate for fear of the Wild Weasel’s, both Air Force and Navy.
Shrike missiles required prior electronic intelligence flights over the operating area (see the movie BAT-21 for reference) to find the targeting and/or locating radar transmitters bandwidth. This data was programmed into the Shrike missiles and aircraft mounted jamming pods for better accuracy.
The scooter mod is by far the gold standard.

A couple of things:
- locking your wheels (skidding) will always give you worse braking performance than if you feather them at as high as you can without them skidding
- you seemed to not have your yaw damper on (stab aug on left side, autopilot panel)
- your radar wasnt on so it was falling back to radar altimeter for bombing (less accurate)

If I remember right, the A-4 was the only aircraft to ever be put into service by the US that over performed, under budget, and ahead of schedule.
The A-4 was amazing for its time. DCS IS GETTING to be where reality and simulation are blurred.

As a tech that currently works on A4N I can definitely say the brakes are that weak, they are literally the same system as a motorcycle essentially, no booster or antiskid and the hydraulics are separate from the main aircraft system. We also have to inspect the tires after every flight due to such minimal damage tolerance.
Was listening to a podcast with a former Skyhawk pilot who flew in Vietnam, he said they would be 20 degrees nose down on bombing runs.

Brakes on this are actually really good, this a/c doesn't have anti-skid so if you want to get the absolute maximum out of it, you need to increase pressure on the brakes until just before they lock up (what you described as screeching)

Also, carrier operations don’t require brakes except to hold and maneuver around the deck! The hook and trap is what stops you!

15:25 the newer harms don’t need a constant radar signal to hit, once they have a target, the missile gets the GPS of the target to so even if the radar turns off the missile still hits

I just noticed that the aircraft suspension shifts with the weight when each bomb is added to the wing pylons!

When you arm the spoilers they will deploy when your under 70% ish throttle. If you chop throttle in flight with them armed they’ll deploy too.

The A-4’s brakes are locking up. If you hold the brakes down all the way, they’ll lock and won’t actually help you much. If you put around 60% brake pressure, you won’t lock them up.
Or you can pump the brakes.
I think whats going on with the Brakes is Hydraulics related/limited. So, for instance when landing try pumping the brakes with 3 second long holds initially and as you slow make the pumping shorter 1-2 secs long. The other thing is it may be related to an ABS style system. But, I have always landed her with that method as I found it works best as well as giving her a little nose down input at the same time. I hope this helps especially if you encounter shorter runways or poor weather!

Needs a compareable FREE Mod for the RED's to make it really accessible. A Freeware Mig-17 for example, or a Mig-21F-13. But no one ever thinks about the other side. WW-2: 7 different planes for Blue, just 3 for Red! And those 3 don't even have exotic Weapon Setup's for Air to Ground. Not even Panzerschreck's for the Anton's!

@@evansnyder430tbf there's not too much that would suit dcs that they could add for red except maybe one of the heavy fighters or jets but I doubt there would be much of a market for them or they would be way too powerful compared to what blue has

I wanted to love the A4 but it has some major pain points mentioned in the video. 1) The bomb computer gets messed up with any roll input, and the A4 rolls VERY easily. 2) No nose wheel steering. They desperately need to add this back. Differential breaking is pain because 3) As shown in the video, the breaks are weird. They seem to lock up even at low speed.
The other thing I will add, my experience on Enigma's are every Mig 21 heads right at you. Because of how the AWACs works on Enigma's you can feel like Mig 21 food at times.
That’s been my experience with the migs…. Hard to find ground targets without being hit by a MiG first.
IIRC, the current HARMs "remember" where a signal was when it turns off, so the missile stands a chance of still hitting the radar. Particularly if it goes active again.

yea, radar needs to be in AG mode (last position on the dial). You'll know it's right cause you'll see the scan bar descending vertically on the bscope
i think dcs without any labels shows you why in so many hud camera videos the party being shot down doesn't even know anyone is behind them
So the shrike is designed to loft, so close in it really makes it even more iffy than it already is because of how not maneuverable they are. It also doesn’t help that you need to make sure you have the correct seeker head for the radar band you’re looking for. I’m curious to see if ED can improve on it more with the F-4 coming out.
You would calculate your stab trim setting for every takeoff. It is different depending on loadout.
6:00 you were not diving enough for the a/g radar to properly get the range. I recommend at *least* 20°, preferrably over 25°

Just FYI - the targeting computer doesn't work with snake eyes or cluster bombs. It can only compute pure ballistic tracks, so anything with a lot of drag doesn't work. Slick bombs work just fine, even in toss bombing, and you can sometimes cheat it a bit by aiming way past the target with CBUs. Like most things in the A4, it's more art than science - by which I mean it's complex and completely manual, so it's difficult to do well.

In your bombing runs, did you even have the A/G Radar turned on? Think that may have been part of the reason those first clusters were nowhere near the mark.
I guess not... Many other viewers have pointed this out and it wouldn't be surprising if that was the case.
So when a jet lands on an aircraft carrier they're not applying their brakes. They're applying throttle the arresting cable is things slowing down to stop in the jet. Because if they applied brakes every landing airframe shop would be replacing the brakes every landing.
I could watch hours of this!

8.35 you need to map your brakes to an axis and apply them incrementally. You were locking the brakes.

I've found that if you retract your flaps shortly after touchdown the wheel brakes work much better. Don't know if that's intended or not.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I'm pretty sure there's another plane I remember that uses the same procedure when you get all wheels down because lifting the flaps would put more weight on the wheels since there's less lift.

I've downloaded the A-4 to try out although I've got a lot of rust to shake off. How does the A2G payload compare with the F-5 Tiger?
Admittedly I'm still itching for a company to bring out the A-6 Intruder and SU-17. I'm definitely a ground pounder and would love to see more Cold War aircraft in general in DCS, I was disappointed when the F-16 and AV-8 announcements turned out to the more modern versions.
Sadly the A-6 might not come for a few more years. The A2G payload for the A-4 is 1000% better with the amount of options to choose from

And the A-4 was designed for carrier ops, do it had a hook to stop it. They didn't put much in the way of brakes on it because it was really never meant for runway use.

I don’t really make campaign missions. I mainly go on multiplayer servers and the main one for the A4 is enigmas Cold War server.
The A4 still has a lot of work to be done on it. Niggling little asthetic things liek the nose oleo being a tad too short to the flight model being quite a way out of whack. The roll rate (ridiculously responsive and far, far, too much rate), pitch response, acceleration, etc all need a lot of attention. A life long friend flew A-4C's (VA-75) in the mid to late 60's and is also an avid DCS flyer gave me his opinions and they pretty much went along with my own. Its good, but it isn't quite there yet. Keep going guys, this will be one heck of a mod when she's done n dusted, after the OV-10 Bronco definitely one of my fav mods.
The A-4E has one of the fastest roll rates in the world at 720 degrees per second. The A-4E in game is within a few % of the published numbers plus an A-4M pilot was hugely involved in the flight model tuning especially for all transient conditions, plus there are plent of other A-4 pilots that have commented on the forums saying it's quite close. So I'm not sure where way out of wack comes from. Perhaps you flew a much older version.
@@JNelson_ I am fully aware of the Real World A-4's flight characteristics, alas the DCS Model is far removed from reality in many ways and I will reiterate that it has a LONG way to go. I would be happy to debate this statement with the other "real world" A-4 "pilots". FYI the A-4 was LIMITED to a 360 deg roll rate, a fact that is stated quite clearly in the A-4 NATOPS manual. This was put in place as the aircraft would break apart due to the excessive forces brought to the airframe at such high rates. Lets not get into roll rates with war loads... A book could be written concerning the inaccuracies the flight model. This aircraft has been recreated in its present form for "WOW" factor, nothing more, nothing less. However it is as I originally stated a fantastic attempt at bringing a superb aircraft to the simulator world.
@@Ecthaelyon The limit to 360 deg/s is a requirement for the pilots. There is nothing limiting the aircraft from A-4 from doing more than 360 deg/s. Unfortunately you are misinformed.

If you think there are inaccuracies with the flight model use numbers otherwise you are just talking without any informed basis.

I wonder if the Sidewinder launched while the Saber was in pursuit of the MiG did not actually hit your ally instead. The two aircrafts were awfully close and your Fox 2 seemed to go straight for the closest contact.

I'm not sure, but your not wrong that it can.
It can haul quite a lot for its size; according to Wikipedia the E variant could carry up to 8500 lb of ordance on its five hardpoints. More than the internal capacity of a B-17.

First downed plane was a Sukhoi Su-25 in Russian camo, the second was Sukhoi Su-7 Egyptian AF...
If it lands on aircraft carriers then brakes will be weak as you dont need good brakes. The F18 is the same.

How are you so smooth with the A4, I'm always shaking and waving all over the place
I forget, if there’s a way to change the shaking amount in Special settings, but also the aircraft loses speed very fast if you pull on the joystick too hard and too fast. You really want to try to avoid going under 250 mph after that it’s very hard to get your speed back and you’re going to find yourself shaking a lot.

The ARM is too good in DCS.
The Shrike is almost useless.
The AGM-122 Sidearm that Harrier has, is so useless thst it wasn't carried as it was just dead weight, because any target required you to get so close to shilka that it shot you down twice before getting Sidearm acquiring a lock, and then tou were way too close to die your own shrapnel where ever the Sidearm flew, other than target.
The AGM-88 HARM is same way overpowered. Regardless it having a INS to record the coordinates if the radar turns off, the HARM is so inaccurate that you don't likely hit anything so it would be damaged.
The next generation ARGMER is a different thing, as now missile has GPS guidance and it know where it is, and it can acquire better coordinate mid-flight so that it memorizes the target coordinates better.
As well the Shilkas are so unrealistic in the game. They shoot with constant pure lead tracking, and does so awful job. As there is multiple methods how to do area denial for attack planes. You dont fly in that saturated area as you will fly to shells and die... Now tou are in control through whole attack run and Shilkas aint any danger to you.
The targeting computer is as well way too accurate. It is great at 20-35 degree attack runs when your target is on flst desert terrain. But otherwise they are challenging to hit a thing. That is one reasons laser guided bombs were invented becsude changes to hit a stationary tank with full 12x Mk.82 release was around < 10%. And that is why AGM-65 Maverick was created. To give a 50% Pk to hit a tank size target 1.5-2 Km range.
The laser guided bombs main benefits is that ground forces designated target for you, and you could find the target more easily with tracker. Capability drop a bomb from 15000ft while flying over was huge thing.
There is reason why ARBS system was invented, because any bombing triangulation calculation was very inaccurate. Radar or just using bombing tables. Nothing was as accurate than ARBS until GBU-12 was invented.
That is what Harrier got in nose and A-4 got to use later on as pod.
Sadly all in DCS can perform wrapon drops with perfect reticle sighting, that should be massively inaccurate without GBU or ARBS.
And Mavericks are way too long range capable to track anything.

If so, you might need to check to see if you have the latest A4 update. They just released one and I think it’s 2.2.

The real scooter had an insane roll rate. You can tweak your curves a bit to make it a bit more docile, but it was a handful in real life.

Imagine going to war leaving your wife and son behind I'm a lieutenant in the fire service and a lieutenant in urban search and rescue I work 24 hours on and 2 days off I also get deployed to town after tornadoes go through for days I hate leaving my wife and son and I got a large search and rescue tattoo on my right bicep on the side that's big and my wife loves that tattoo when she lays down on me with her little head in my shoulder she will massage that tattoo and kiss it and she loves me flexing for her and she also loves it when I pick her up and wrap her legs around my waist and lay her head on my shoulder or chest and hold her and also when she sees my PTSD acting up she will sit on me facing me and tell me baby everything will be ok honey and she will lay her head in my shoulder and sing to me and massage my shoulders she's a real woman she does all her wife duties and takes care of me her husband and nurtures me and I have chronic pain and has soon has she puts her little hands on me my pain stop she could cure cancer if I had cancer
And also when me and our son is in my office our gaming room playing games my beautiful wife isn't like other women she will come sit on my lap and watch us and join in or she will ask "are you boys hungry and thirsty" and of course we are men we are always hungry we say yes she will say "alright my babies let me get dinner started" and she will bring us our plate and Pepsi in there I don't neglect my wife I'll play for a couple of hours then get off and spend time with her and give her attention she has even told me "baby I have never craved any mans attention but I damn crave yours daddy"
And my beautiful southern wife will even tell y'all I'm the man of this house and the man of this marriage she submits to me and she is subservient to me and she follows any command I give her with no arguments or combativeness I'm a lieutenant in the fire service and a lieutenant in urban search and rescue and when I tell her to do some she does it immediately and she says "yes sir lieutenant" she was raised right by her strong masculine father and maw maw and she even says thank God I was raised right baby I love submitting to you and being your wife I'm proud to be your wife she even said if you get a shirt baby that says "property of Cory" id wear the hell out of that shirt she even views her self has my property which she is and she even says "I feel nothing but safe with you baby you're my protector I know no man would ever be able to scare me or hurt me with you" and plus I have really big muscular arms she loves and when we go out she will walk on my right side and a little bit behind me wrapping her arms around my right arm following me and when we go out she doesn't cuss in public and she doesn't speak unless spoken too and when some one else especially another man talks to her she will look at me for permission to talk I love that and I even asked her why she said "because I'm your wife baby i have your last name it's my job to make your last name look good and plus youre my leader i won't ever do nothing with out asking you for permission"
And that's how all women should be she never embarrasses me we have a old school traditional marriage that's why we are the happiest couple and she's the happiest woman and not depressed because she's following her natural instincts that's why the majority of females these days are sad and depressed because they bought the lie feminism sold them
And we are nothing but country we have hunting camouflaged wedding rings
And also we represent the old south she has even seen me fist fight and we talk we have no idea what happened to the south it seems the only rebels left in the south is us back in our day we raised hell 20 years ago and we never talked shit now all these generation z boys do is talk shit like our 22 year old next door neighbor still living with his dad and mom he got mad at me and was talking shit saying he's the wrong one I stepped down to the tree line and smiled and told him to come get some and he ran I told his dad if that was my boy I'd be fucking embarrassed back in mine and my wife's says some one walking towards you saying they are the wrong one was a fight on site
They recently added the Agm-45B (upgraded shrike) would be great to see those in actiom
