    I started learning Japanese because I wanted to play Phoenix Wright! (Having absolutely loved all the games in English, I specifically wanted to play the games that weren't released in English: 逆転検事2 and 大逆転裁判 1 and 2 because Capcom pretty strongly indicated they'd never release those games in English...In fact they've still not been released in English, but a fan translation exists for 2/3 of them now with the 3rd one on the way)
    Your review is spot on! I'd specifically want to stress your point (because it reflects my personal experience) that if you play a lot of games like this, you will end up as someone who has a reading skill significantly stronger than their speaking/listening skills, so please be careful or at least aware of that! The only thing I think I would add is that the cutscenes at the beginning of the cases (which are often quite important as they're the hook for the case) are usually autoscrollers so you have no time to look stuff up. For this reason, (and basically always if you're learning Japanese with games) I'd recommend recording your gameplay so you can review autoscrolling text on your own time. As an added benefit, recordings of your play sessions allow you to see progress if you're speaking the dialog out loud, which is nice as well.
    Lastly, while I agree with your assessment that in terms of difficulty for beginners AA is not the ideal starting place, I don't think there is such a thing as a difficulty-based ideal starting place. The ideal starting place for any individual is the game they love so much that they're motivated to go through all the trouble of looking stuff up all the time if it means they get to play that game. For me, that game was Ace Attorney!
    (One other special point: If you play specifically 逆転検事2 as a learner (my first attempted game), you're going to have a lot of trouble. The reason is the new mechanic introduced in that game is Logic Chess which specifically gives you only a certain amount of time to respond to written prompts. Despite owning an actual copy of the game for NDS (NDS is not region-locked), I had to restart from the beginning playing on an emulator and use the emulator's pausing features in order to get through those parts of the game, just to buy myself enough time to understand the prompts.)

      Firstly thank you for taking the time to watch my video and for the in-depth comment!
      That's a great story to hear, learning Japanese to play some games that would never see the light of day in the Western world, that's definitely a worthwhile reason. I saw 逆転検事2 in BookOff the other week and thought about picking up but held off - sounds like that might have been the right move. I would like to play it too some day. Do you know whether 大逆転裁判 has any sections similar which make it really difficult? As I'd really like to play those too!
      I also agree with all your comments on the video, the important thing when learning a language is to make it fun, and if you're having fun and/or determined to reach a certain goal by all means start wherever you want to!
      Thanks again for all the advice to other learners (myself included). I hope you can check out some of my future videos!

      @@ZentoJPN 大逆転裁判 doesn't have any timed gameplay bits that I recall. The challenge with those games is that they're set in the late 1800s, so there's some old-timey Japanese to contend with!

      Okay great, thanks for letting me know! Old time Japanese can be tough. I've been reading Bungo Stray Dogs recently and that uses lots of old words, and more so old kanji!

    That's great if you want to learn some vocabulary around legal subjects and to answer the question in the title "yes" you can learn japanese with this game, but if the question is "should you learn japanese with Phoenix Wright?" the answer is definitely not.
    If you want to learn Japanese (through games), you should at all cost pick games that have voice support. Hearing and reading are too different processes, sure you learn by reading but if you study Japanese only with text based games let say for 2 years then you'll need another year of hearing to rewire your brain, whereas if you play 2 years of voice support games then you'll already be both used to reading and hearing, and that's a big deal!

    • @ZentoJPN
      @ZentoJPN  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's definitely true, I usually suggest a good mix of skills where possible. But if people want to only play games with Japanese text or they really want to play a certain series in Japanese I'm all for encouraging them to just make it happen. Voice acted games is definitely more efficient though.

    I am learning Japanese in school and have been for about a year i would say i am in one of the lowest levels, what would i have to do to get to a level to play this game in japanese

    • @ZentoJPN
      @ZentoJPN  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say having good Kanji knowledge would help, between 500-1000 will make reading/looking up in a dictionary much less frustrating. And 1000-2000 general vocab as a good base level. On top of that there's lots of legal/police vocab in this game you might need to learn specifically. But the good thing is lots of it is repeated throughout the game. So maybe the first case will take a long time, but the other cases should get easier as you recognise more vocabulary again.
      Good luck with your studies and I hope you can play these games one day! :)
