Jack Pearl was cerrtainly popular on radio in the 1930's with his "Baron Munchausen" routine. And, like Ed Wynn {"The [Fire] Chief"}, MGM thought they could make him a movie star with a feature film of his own. It was not to be. Jack Benny had advised Pearl not to limit his popularity with his "Vas you dere, Sharlie?" catchphrase, but he insisted that'was expected of him from radio listeners. By the early 1940's, his popularity had faded.......but Pearl continued to appear on radio into the early 1950's with "THE BARON AND THE BEE", a combination of his well-worn routines with contestants competing in a spelling bee. It lasted through 1954. There had been talk of an animated TV version of the "Baron" in 1959, but nothing came of it. Jack received a star on the "Hollywood Walk of Fame" in 1960, but had essentially retired. He passed away in 1982.
