It's sad she didnt get her chance to play a game she obviously loved.. Instead the men were so terrified of being shown up they had to ban ALL women. pitiful.
Once, when I was a student in a college-level Calculus course, I respectfully pointed out a computational mistake my Professor made. I guess that means I am better at Math than a Mathematics professor with a PhD, and if she denied my request to start teaching the course from then on, it's because she was terrified of being shown up by me. In short, Oni Raptor: You're a moron.
@James Smith: No, you are. Your supposed anecdote is a terrible example that’s in no way comparable. She pitched well enough to make Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig each miss three times in a row. That shows true pitching skill and is in no way a fluke. A math error like forgetting the negative sign when taking the derivative of cosine or the integral of sine is minor (and totally understandable for lengthy problems having numerous operations involving sign changes), so correcting something like that doesn’t show true mathematical skill.
Listening to this really angered me. I get that women’s rights weren’t mainstream back then, but they couldn’t even admit that Mitchell had some insane talent.
oh please she was nothing anyway. shit is too strong of a word. disrespected is a better word. not that he talent was of not anyway, well maybe for a woman.
HNIC Strongly disrespected. She got results, and it was obvious those two batters did not simply let her win. The goal of a pitcher is to not let the batter hit, which is what she did.
yes it is obvious they weren't being serious because of who they are and the fact that they see faster better pitches than that in batting practice. it was just a stunt this was not a serious outing if you think any one involved was taking this seriously you are a damn fool
When my Mom worked at Clark Thread Co. in Acworth, GA at the beginning of WW II, there was a woman there whose minor leaguer brother threw to her in the off season. She later made the high school baseball team as a pitcher. This went on until the school board learned that she was unchaperoned on the team bus and kicked her off the squad. The rest of the team then quit in protest. The board fad to hire a chaperone for away games to get the boys to return. Her mother could not understand who the team quit until she watched a game from behind the outfield fence. Her daughter struck out every batter.
Man, that kind of sexism really makes my blood boil. Merit should count in sports, not what's between your legs. And, as you described, she had plenty of merits and could compete directly. They said that women were too delicate for the sport, but it's clear their egos were too delicate for women's participation. Such fragility. Pathetic.
In all honesty I think women should be allowed to compete in any sport and career (like the military) as long as standards aren't lowered to accommodate them and they aren't granted any special privileges. Then, once they are in the competition for real, reality will do the rest.
Standards are being lowered to accommodate them. For example, there are female police officers who are suing the city because they feel the physical requirements discriminate against women. Requirements which include things such as running, pushups, situps and a couple other basic things.
This young woman was decade's ahead of her time, I'm glad she was recognized by this video! At least she could hold her head high knowing she struck out the Sultan of Swat and the Iron Horse!
Because they would be laughed out of existence. The fastest recorded pitch by a woman in history is 69 miles per hour. How the fuck was a 17 year old girl striking out babe Ruth with a 60 mile per hour fast ball? It was a fake publicity stunt during the Great depression. Some dumb people ( and a lot of feminists) have latched onto this as a reality. But it's not. Men and women are biologically different. And the upper body strentgth is the biggest difference , when it comes to sports. And women just don't have the upper body strength required to be a major league pitcher.
@@Epimpin101 Yeah, they are different, but there can always be anomalies that make it not a hard and fast rule. I don't see why this couldn't be one of those.
Simon do a video about the town that was created in Ireland specifically to build the TITANIC. The history etc..... Like if you would think that was an interesting video. 👍
She pitched underhand (she was a Softball player, as women didn't play Baseball until WWII when men were away fighting and stadiums needed to be filled), which neither of them as Baseball players would be familiar with. So no, she just used a dirty trick to win...which is why they kicked her out.
DxBlack the video said she pitched left handed and side arm, not underhanded. Side arm pitchers are hard to hit anyway specially left handed. Just look at Randy Johnson.
Clearly, whatever shithole country you live in failed to educate you. It's feminists who don't want men and women competing against each other in sports. Conservatives welcome the challenge, because it will provide undeniable proof (in front of millions of viewers) that men and women are not even close to equal and that men on average are better than women in almost all physical sports. Deep down feminists know this, and it terrifies them, so they do what they do best: They hide it from the public eye.
I have a mixture of sadness and anger, rightful anger everytime I hear stories like that... When they're old like this one is not as painful but we still have situations like this now... Hopefully not for much longer...
No but people have to make president to ban an item, it could be considered dirty even if it wasn't illegal. That said to this day their are a few pitchers who do it even though it's a style that only is effective by it's rarity as it isn't as fast as other styles.
Actually, no... Pitching underhand was not (and I don't believe it is yet) illegal in baseball. It's illegal to pitch overhand in softball, but that's technically a different sport. Since the underhand style of pitching (or as in Mitchell's case, side-arm) is actually at the disadvantage of being somewhat slower than conventional (overhand) pitching, there's literally no excuse to be made for the likes of Gehrig or Ruth simply not having the skills to catch the ball at the end of their bats... It's just a measure of skill vs skill, and she didn't suck. They (however) either in underestimating her, or in their own rights and on their own accounts failed at bat. Simple as that... The rest is rhetoric and sexist BS from the fragile male egos who can't stand the idea that a female might actually be able to possess something like skills. Get over yourselves, boys... skills do not and never have been based on the thing dangling between your legs (or the lack there-of)... Any biology involved is not in the chemical, electrical, or memorable receptors in the brain. :o)
Is it possible these guys took a dive for her or maybe even underestimated her? after all this was an exhibition. If not, then its truly sad her career was shut down.
