What is there to say except "Bryn Terfel." He has a great voice and knows how to use it! The first few times watching and listening to him I came away thinking, "that guy is loaded with personality." Later I came to realize he was a superb actor. In this video, he makes the most out of the proud toréador, Escamillo, and leaves you with an image you won't soon forget. My ultimate test of operatic artists comes down to a handful of roles. As for Terfel, I have never hated a Don Giovanni as much as I did watching his portrayal!
I've sung Carmen many times but always Zuniga the little bass part. Like most basses I can sing the Toreador easily enough. But I'm never cast. Why? I just don't look like a bull fighter. I'm 6'4" like Terfel and overweight again like Terfel. I look more like the bull.
Thank you for the advice. I have sung Sarastro as well as Osmin, Bartolo, and Don Alfonso. My role in Don Giovanni is Commendatore. If I were to sing another part in Giovanni it would be Leporello - not the Don. I've never been able to sing the soft high parts of that role. I've done about thirty roles on stage including a couple Wagnerian parts. I have a number of arias here on TH-cam - mostly the songs and arias that are a bit too low for most basses.

Disfruté mucho esta versión. Pienso que en cuanto a la voz de Terfel sería necio señalarle algo negativo, y en cuanto a la interpretación, creo que es muy buena pues se nota que él como artista la disfruta y a mí como oyente me ha hecho disfrutarla, a fin de cuentas creo que ha logrado el propósito. Además, como latinoamericano, celebro que él siendo Galés se haya atrevido a hacer cosas que por lo general a los europeos no se les ocurriría, en nuestras palabras "le ha puesto sabor" bien por él.

Terfel has just about the right range for this strophic song. Verdi baritones consider their money notes to be their Gs and A Flats. This only goes up to a F. That makes it in range of basses like Ramey, Ghiaurov or Pinza. It's a little too low for the real high baritones like Milnes or Hampson. Terfel's only problem is he looks more like the bull than the bull fighter.
Escamillio has a high g in the duet with Don Jose. So it's a Baritone/ bass baritone role. I've only heard one bass sing the high g, and that's Nicola Ghiuzelev

He is trying to depict the aria with his body so he is almost making it a bit like a buffo toreador...... Agorante wrote below about the range and it is quite true... For a baritone with higher pitch the most disturbing is that most of this aria is exactly around passagio area and that is quite killing..... although he is rather weak in his lower register and tries to make it sound larger.........
The less famous Margaret Price's voice was generally better, i.m.o. Terfel is a more confidently expressive performer, but this is far from his best singing.
He is not such a bad actor but his voice is just so unpleasant to listen to... The best recordings i have heard of this aria are from Tibbett, Bechi and Ruffo
