Why Range Claims on TV Antennas Aren't Accurate

  • In this video I talk about why you should not buy an antenna based on the mile range listed on the product page or the box. Too many people are buying antennas based on a specific range using keywords like 80 mile antenna, 100 mile antenna, 150 mile antenna, ect. Most of the time range listed on an antenna is not accurate, an exaggeration, and sometimes just plan false advertising.

was it directional? if so how much room does it take to swing it? i have to mount mine to a tower and would have to build a stand off arm, if its like most real good antennas ive had theres no way i could use it off the side of a tower.

it is really amazing that the FCC, nor FTC has it gotten more serious about cracking down on all these companies are making these obviously misleading at best, and erroneous claims at worst when it comes to these antennas. six or seven years ago, I bought just to kind of in Tenna you have been suggesting not to buy because at the time I didn’t really know any better although I should have, and guess what that antenna did not work and I ended up returning it to Amazon. so I as I’m sure many other viewers really appreciate that you have been bringing all this out of the forefront. It Hass to keep happening until some powerful person finally decides to do something about it. Because it really is a nasty scam. Great job as always.

When I was a small child back in the late 1960's to early 1970's, our family moved into this village which within one year of our move got amalgamated into a much larger city. The guy who lived behind us had this GIANT 50 ft antenna tower in his backyard with three stacked antennas on top and a flag on top of that. Tyler it was a thing of beauty. When 1970 hit, the city told him he had to take the tower down which he did. He then moved to the country where he could set up a new GIANT antenna. At the time this guy got signals from Detroit, Cleveland and Erie, PA. Then cable came and that ended antennas in our once little village.

I have tried a bunch and that cheap 150 mile antenna has done the best for me. I tried a more expensive antenna and it did not do nearly as well. But then I tried changing the filter from the more expensive antenna to the cheaper one and the cheaper one's reception got even better. I believe the filter must be more important than the actual antenna. The cheaper antenna's rotation function failed really quickly but it was pointed in the right direction so it didn't hurt anything.

I bought an antenna from a rather strange man in a quaint shop full of curiosities. He told me I would be amazed at the channels I would be getting. I asked him how much he wanted for it, and he told me no one ever pays for anything in his shop. With money.
Well, nothing to read into there.
I took it home and installed it. Only got three channels broadcasting in analog, black and white, and 4:3 screen ratio. Lots of cigarette and liquor ads. Sometimes Rod Serling or Alfred Hitchcock seems to be speaking directly to me. I'll admit that's a little scary.

Now the cable that comes with it is junk but it will last about a year before it needs changing(all ready done that).for around $30, i think its pretty dang good. i haven't tried a regular ant with a signal booster to compare.

Antennas are rated by dBi which stands for decibels over an isotropic. Most rabbit ears are 3 dBi which doubles the receive of an isotropic antenna. A Yagi or a log periodic will get you about 12 dBi. Antennas are never measured by miles, because that varies with the height of the antenna. Nonetheless, don't fall for any late night infomercial stuff when a plain old aerial will give you a kick ass signal.

What's the best way to pick up a fringe FM radio station that's far away, but broadcasts on the same frequency as a local channel? Is there a way to make a directional antenna that will only pick up stations within maybe 20-30 degree area? I'm asking because I can occasionally pick up some stations from southeastern Virginia from here in Baltimore since there's virtually no obstructions up the Chesapeake bay other than curvature of the earth. They tend to come in anywhere from a few seconds up to roughly an hour, then get overpowered by closer stations. If I drive to a certain part of I695, theres an area right near the water with a big concrete wall I can park next to and receive these stations sometimes with almost no interference from local stations. Occasionally the signal is strong enough to display radio data and even grab the HD signal. I have a video of this i'll upload to youtube shortly. I understand I can easily tune in online, but where's the fun in that? Thanks for reading

Waaaaay back in days gone by, I remember seeing range numbers of perhaps 40-50 miles. I think the crooks started claiming higher and higher numbers so the competent makers gave up on the ratings. The only number that means anything is the gain in dB but that is complicated.

If you have stations in opposite directions you could receive stations 150 miles apart (if the antenna were 150' above the ground)... Voila! 150 mile range! 8-) and if you point the antenna at the moon, you might receive a signal by moonbounce... Voila! 990 or 1000 or... Mile range! Like the 20, 30, or 50 mile bubble-pack walkie-talkies that really only have a 3-5 Mile range unless you are talking between two mountaintops or "125W" stereo amps that output 45W RMS per channel (or CB radios that supposedly put out more than the legal 5W) - the peak-to-peak voltage of an alternating current sine wave is 2.818 x RMS (the average of the highs and lows which represents the actual work it can do...) so if you convert RMS to P-P it "sounds" much bigger than it really is... 8-) in short, divide claims by three or more to find the truth 8-) (legit tv antenna makers like Winegard and Channel.Master use either the EIA color-code or an equivalent mileage rating that represents an average minimum real-world range I.e. the "45mile" Winegard will usually give good reception 45+ miles from a VHF or UHF tower on the rooftop while the PingDingDong might detect a UHF signal up to 50 miles away if it's 35+ feet above the ground...)

With all due respect, you never covered the center frequency. Different countries use different frequencies for TV broadcast and whilst one may perform better in your area and another not so well, go across the pond and the roles may be reversed.
You need an antenna that is tuned to the frequency of the broadcast you're after.
My small, home-made Yagi can talk with the ISS on only 5W of power. Yet, it does really crap at picking up the Freeview 520MHz broadcasts. The ISS was over 1000km away at the time and the tower for TV 30 miles. Go figure.

The mile range is a BS rating made in America for marketing purposes. It is just a gimmick. The true indicator for antenna (Rx) performance is gain (dBi) in passive (raw) or active (amplified) mode in response to its frequency range. If you look at the specs of serious antenna manufacturers such as Televes (Spain), Fracarro (Italy) o Maspro (Japan) you will notice they use GAIN as the key factor for antennae comparisons.

Also can you divide the channel into Beginners and professionals, people that are more experienced do not need to know about UHF and VHF we know the difference, etc. Professionals need leading edge into to enhance our skills.
