Thank you, it is helpful. Although I want to find an IPA version because this sound notation system always seems too far from the origin of the letters.
@@YesPhonicsPublishing Well, our letter based writing system originates from Latin and the characters/letters had a strict correlation to the sounds uttered. Here are a few examples where this is not followed in the American Heritage and Merriam-Webster Dictionaries. Besides different American dictionaries often do not even agree with each other, while the IPA is used as a standard by all other dictionaries, AFAIK. Examples: IPA vs AHD & MW dictionaries: eɪ vs ā & ā as in ray, eight, take, date, bake, pain; these are clearly diphthongs and marking them with a single character is a problem. iː vs ē & ē as in eat, pee, see, heat, beat; this sound is marked by the letter in virtually all other European Latin based writing systems. Even the English language did that before the great vowel shift when in a very simplistic way (as in ah) became similar to what used to be (as in lake) and similarly (lake) became (as in see) and became (plus the diphthong creating , i.e. ). IPA: aʊ vs AHD: ou vs MW: au? as in out, pout; and finally IPA u vs AHD: o͞o vs MW: ü as in two, toot, shoot, hoot, goose; here MW uses a symbol that has a completely weird interpretation for anyone who knows that is used to denote a much higher sound that an , as if you wanted to pronounce an (see) while pronouncing an (toot). I hope this helps.

The Orton cards are complete and very useful, but so plain and dry. My grandson deflates when we use the Orton cards but is happy to do your app. Having the three representations on the front of the card, for both he and I to see, is perfect. The phoneme with the pronunciation guide and the words makes it so very easy to see, hear and apply the correct sounds. Genius I say, pure genius! While I can make the PDF work, I'd absolutely love to have a set of sealed heavy weight cards. If you had a link for either the PDF or the cards below your video I believe you'd sell a ton of them. Awesome video for learning to read, but isn't sh also used in the beginning of the syllable after the first one in fashion? Or the rule only applies to words of English origin? And fashion in this case is Latin French. 7:18
Thanks! Yes, these rules only apply to English words, but it's very easy to teach 'exceptions' when teaching foreign words that are commonly used in the English vocabulary.
Technically even the word x-ray really begins with the first sound that the e makes... We are technically using the name of the letter x as its sound. I would treat the x in xylophone like an unusual spelling and put an X over it or double underline it to show that it's different if you’re teaching students. I've not seen any other type of explanations for it. There is still a bit of memorization that goes on in the English language, but a Spalding approach takes cuts out a lot of the memorization. Hope this helps:)
Root words: A root is the core of a word that is irreducible into more meaningful elements. In morphology, a root is a morphologically simple unit which can be left bare or to which a prefix or a suffix can attach.
You bet! With “all” you’d simply underline the phonogram “a” and write a ‘3’ above it (it’s “a’s” 3rd sound ‘ah’) and underline the first ‘l’ as it only has one sound. You’d then double underline the second ‘l’ as you do for letters that are silent and you’d also put an ‘x’ over it, as to notate the fact that it’s an unusual silent letter. Hope that helps!

We could teach ps as a two letter phonogram, but basically we don't... The word is borrowed from the Greek and the second half from the Latin. Often when we borrow words from other languages we keep it as similar as possible. We tell children that the p is silent in words such as these, and we practice them and we test them and we review them.
A root word is a basic word with no prefix or suffix added to it (a prefix is a string of letters that go at the start of a word; a suffix is a string of letters that go at the end of a word). By adding prefixes and suffixes to a root word we can change its meaning. The suffixes -er and -est are also used to form the comparative and superlative of adjectives (for example, light / lighter / lightest). For example: The root word astro could have the suffix -nomy added to it to make the word astronomy. You can check out more info at this site here: www.theschoolrun.com/what-is-a-root-word They do a great job over there!

I like for going thru the sounds and using example words.
Where can I purchase the cards? I live in Canada and I think this is an amazing approach to help a 10 year old with reading and spelling. The site given for the purchase will not let me in.
You can get them for free on google books! You’ll just have to download the PDF and print them out.
Hi Deb,
We recently created a fetchapp account where most of our products are available for download for a modest price. Simply download the file and then either DIY by printing, cutting and collating the Flash Cards, or (the way I recommend), simply e-mail the file to your local print shop and have them do the leg work, the file is set up so that any print shop will know how to print, cut and collate. Hope this helps.

You’re welcome, Carre! If you’re looking for a more hands-on approach with this video, we have our flashcards for sale in both black-and-white and full color - all you have to do is download the file; print, cut and collate them yourself (in a do it yourself fashion), or you can send the file to your local print shop and they can do all the work for you for a nominal price!
We also have an excellent phonetic bingo game available for download and print as well. Thanks so much for stopping by and watching our video :-)

So R u saying that some letters makes more than one sound.
Correct! 👍🏼
Those are a c e g i o s u x and y but the didn't say that x has another sound, the sounds are
/ks/-/z/-/eks/
very useful these
Glad you've found them helpful, Vidya!
Its fabulous thank you
Thanks for watching!
it was useful, thanks.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
I'm amazed, thank you very much!
Glad you enjoyed our video!
That's so great! I'll use this with my students. Thank you
Awesome!!
I love this but they left out when x is just x like "x-ray" and when it's z like "xylophone"
What is root words?
Root words: A root is the core of a word that is irreducible into more meaningful elements. In morphology, a root is a morphologically simple unit which can be left bare or to which a prefix or a suffix can attach.

Thanks for the great video! What about al, all?
Wow
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Absolutely! Thanks for stopping by. :)

I learn from your video. It helps me a lot. I would like to say thank you to you.
I'm so glad we could help.. :)
I wonder how Ps or Psy in Psychology apply to any of these phonograms.
We could teach ps as a two letter phonogram, but basically we don't...
The word is borrowed from the Greek and the second half from the Latin. Often when we borrow words from other languages we keep it as similar as possible. We tell children that the p is silent in words such as these, and we practice them and we test them and we review them.

What is a root word?
I don't know?
A root word is a basic word with no prefix or suffix added to it (a prefix is a string of letters that go at the start of a word; a suffix is a string of letters that go at the end of a word). By adding prefixes and suffixes to a root word we can change its meaning.
The suffixes -er and -est are also used to form the comparative and superlative of adjectives (for example, light / lighter / lightest).
For example:
The root word astro could have the suffix -nomy added to it to make the word astronomy.
You can check out more info at this site here: www.theschoolrun.com/what-is-a-root-word They do a great job over there!
