Smallcombe (“Smalancombes”), Bath, Somerset and Its Ancient Context: Plus Sun Wheels

- I’ve been a bit under the weather so I didn’t get very far in my walk. To make up for it I go into the ancient context of Bath and bung ina few animated maps. This is Smallcombe near Bathwick in Bath, Somerset and it is named in the Saxon charter of Cliftune Sawyer no. 777.
These history walk videos are about the English landscape in and around the south west of England (though I make the odd foray into Wales). I often use ancient charters (such as Saxon charters) to give me insight into the way the landscape was viewed in the past.
But it is not the Saxons that interest me the most (though they do) but the prehistoric world and its ancient monuments, trackways and ditches.

Totally enjoyable 👍
thank you
Fantastic
7:05 y is u in the Welsh Marches here too - e.g. nearby Knockin, Knuckin, cnycyn ‘bump, small hillock' (Ekwall).
& the Bulla sun pendant found not far away.. PS beautiful birdsong 👍
When I grew up nearby it was always pronounced "Nuckin" by the locals. till some blow-in bought the village shop and thought it would be amusing to call it The Knockin Shop.
@@mikerobinson6420 Yes Mum used to call it Nuckin too - just filmed trying to find the lost Hoarstone, at least I saw a flock of Pewit
@@WildwoodTV did your Mum used to go to Salop for the Flower Show too?😉
@@mikerobinson6420 yep, we had half a day off school for it, and I went last year & saw sheepdogs herding ducks 🦆
hoarstone? Grey or boundary stone. Did you find it?
Excellent ending there!
I really must revisit Bath, it’s been way too long.
Let me know, the Wansdyke needs discovering between the Roman road and the head of Horse Combe
@@AllotmentFox I will do. Would be fun to try and find that!
Thankyou for that
Pleasure. Thank you for watching!
In dutch 'Smalle kom' 😊
Narrow is in dutch 'nauw'.
Myself, I can’t see why ‘smalan’ can’t be small but that is what I am told. It would be interesting to see if Old Dutch has narrow or small
