Vans shoes, or the Van Doren Rubber Company, was established by Steve Van Doren in 1966 in Southern California where his rubber-bottomed deck shoes quickly grew in popularity. Here we cover the rise and fall and rise again of the brand and their amazing history. Adopted by surfers, and later skateboarders like Tony Alva and Peralta, Vans shoes like the Authentic, Era, and Slip-On quickly became staples of the growing skateboard industry.
Along the way, Vans partned with the US air force, appeared on the big screen, have been worn by celebrities, filed for bankruptcy and more!

Another fact that most people know is back in the 1990’s, Steve Caballeros shoe, the Half Cab (full cab before), later was cut in half by skaters, either sowing or covering it with duct tape and later became known as the Half Cab.
Here is a fact for Supreme, I used to camp out at Supreme at Soho NYC. All the workers are actual skater, Supreme actually hates non skaters. A lot of people said that Supreme does not hire you, if you don't skate. And the workers have first dibs on any item, which I respect. In addition, James Jebbia hates seeing his items being resold for thousands.

In '92 I ordered my 1st vans from a surf shop in Clearwater, FL. They had all these wild colorways, but I went all black. I skated them everyday, and still grew out of them before they wore out.
I’m addicted to shoes as it is. I’ve owned numerous pairs of Van’s since I was about 15 years old. Still LOVE them!!!!

I had a pair of vans in the early 80s and they're very comfortable and I still love Vans to this day
In 1993 they moved SOME of their production overseas, not all. They continued to make all the original classic styles in the USA up until around 1997 or thereabouts.

My sister worked answering phs for Van Doren Rubber Company and calling all Vans every evening and collecting their totals. My favorite thing back then was being able to customize your Vans choosing your own colors.

@@ShredzShop well we grew up with the Van Dorens because my Mom is a cousin of theirs. My crush had always been Tony Alva and later we got to be friends cause my sister moved to Venice Beach and thru another friend Neil who owns Carver Skateboards collaborated with him.

After 2008, Vans entered mainland China market. Now vans has its specialty booths at shopping centers/malls at the major cities in China. The model, old school , is pretty expensive right now around 500 RMB, Chinese dollars.
Vans slip on is style 98 not style 36. 36 is what we call the old skool now

Another great fact about Vans is their Triple Crown Series. Whether seeing Slam City Jam to Contests held across America (Skateboarding, Surfing, BMX, Ect.) With quick interviews of professionals in them. Then at the end of the year the winner with the most wins in the series tallied up the most points could win anything such as a fully loaded pick up truck. That was a prime time.

When Vans joined it was The Warped Skateboard Magazine tour skate & music festival then Vans bought the festival out and made it the Warp Tour music festival. I was there.

This is a really solid video. Really enjoyed it. I went to the last Vans Warped Tour as they past through NC with my 17 year old daughter. Great memory. Her little weird bands played but i got to see Real Big Fish. Waffle Head, Forever Warped.

I remember it was hard to find shoe stores that carried them in the early 80's, being from San Jose, i used to catch the 27 bus in front of Oakridge mall and land in Los Gatos, a Shop called Alex's Sports on N Santa Cruz Ave had the coolest selection, I would get my shoes, hang out at Gremic skate shop a little and skate all over Los Gatos all day, great times

Back when Van's was manufacturing in Anaheim you could go down to the factory on Saturdays and get shoes for next to nothing. It was a sad day to see them leave the US

I don't think they have chukka boots anymore. But they're one of those shoes that comes and goes, so Im sure they'll be back around at some point! We used to sell stacks of them like 12/15 yrs ago!
