I may be old fashioned, but I like the tried and true styles of rpg gameplay. I hate what square-enix has done to final fantasy and I'm concerned over what's to come in dragon quest 12 but, I'm glad they are at least throwing people like me a bone and giving us the bravely series, and the octopath engine.
Minor spoiler: One thing that surprised me was that the waters in Savalon never receded. The whole game, I was expecting the waters to go down after I found the water crystal. I thought there would be a whole new layer of the town to explore, and maybe an additional quest dungeon. I guess they had plenty of other side areas, but would've been a cool thing to do.
I find it funny how people widely criticize this one for the simple story when the first two also had very simple stories to them. That's what old-school Final Fantasy was like, too, much more focus on combat than story, and this series is an homage to that. And even then, it has enough layers to still be interesting. At the very least, I found the leads here much more interesting than Yew from Bravely Second. I will say this about the side quests, though. Without spoiling anything, let's just say a few of them are actually 100% mandatory to getting the true ending. That's a big part of the reason I did as many as I could. I didn't wanna miss an important step that would render my progress pointless.
Just to expand a bit about the Side Quests: Yes, most of them are largely pointless fetch quests. BUT, any of them that start off with a 'cut-scene' style story are much more relevant to the plot and character development. An actual quest list would have helped so much. Like the first two Bravely games, and perhaps even more so, this game hides the most interesting world building in optional content - to the point where most of the main villain's back story is hidden in easily missable books or notes that appear after you finish the primary arc in each town (I found only 3 of the 8 or 10 my first time through). I still enjoyed the game, but it does feel like a step back from Bravely Second in overall Quality of Life options...

Yes I agree! I didn’t think I would care about the story at all, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. I am not that far in myself but I love what I have seen of it so far, the job classes don't require nearly as much grinding as I thought they would (there is some grinding to be sure, but it's a fraction of what it was back in the old days) and I also like the map points that tell you where to go. That's less time stumbling around in the dark and more time actually playing a really good jrpg

I loved the game, but it felt like there was less character development from the asterisk holder. Ya replaying the world's 5 times was a little padded, but I really did like how at the end each new world you got to know antagonist more and that theyball survived. You still have some of that here with the first two who you see turns from complete jerks to heroes or the redemption of some of the other villains, but may of them or just mustache twirling villains. Excellent game. Definitely a top 5 JRPG for me. I'm on chapter 5, 50+ hours played, and loving every bit of it. I don't mind the weight system. Gives the game a bit more strategy in character building.
Haven’t played it yet but continue to hear great things, including the similarities to Octopath Traveler. I really like the art style of the game except for the bobble head aesthetic.
I've played and enjoyed Bravely Default and Bravely Second quite a few times since they came out, and I was excited for Bravely Default 2. I also didn't like that it wouldn't go when you were playing the game, only when the switch was in sleep mode. I liked the village rebuilding in Bravely Default because it meant you could get lots of good stuff while playing, as well as being in sleep mode, without too much trouble. ~The absolute worst aspect of this game for me was the weight system. Like it's probably one of the worst features of any game I've played in a long time. But if I'm forced to buy it, and let it sit in my inventory forever until their weight limit goes up, it's just miserable. I wish there was a way to circumvent it. I liked this game but it really made me think twice about getting involved in it again. Still this game was a lot of fun, and I do feel the good outweighed the bad.
Looks pretty nice and reminds me of an old-school RPG. Never played any of the Bravely Default games. No really big on Nintendo games but it sounds like a good time.
I love this game! Your review hit all the high points as well the annoying things like the weight system! I personally hate the boat system, leaving the switch on sleep mode just to get items. I also think the game soundtrack is simple and it works!! The voice acting reminds me of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 with all the accents and I like it for begin different! It is a must have for the switch !!
This is my current rpg of the year and a real breath of fresh air. My only complaints have spoilers so I will keep them to myself lol. One tip, love the card game Meg, love it lol.
Going to avoid spoilers as much as I can with this comment. Some asterisks only unlock via side quests. To get the true ending of the game, you need to acquire all the asterisks. So if you're skipping side-quests now, you'll end up missing out on those asterisks. One of them is the best job in the game IMO. Also, while I agree on the fetch quests sucking, there are a few side-quests that have story elements and character interactions, and I felt those were more entertaining than the main story. I wouldn't discount all the side quests because of a few bad ones to start out with.
I mean yeah, of COURSE you have to go back to the person who gave you a sidequest, that's kinda how it works! The item wouldn't just magically appear in your inventory as soon as you finish the sidequest...
While I agree that the majority of the side quests are lacklustre busy-work, some job classes are locked behind them. Better off doing them or checking guides to make sure you don't miss them!
I love this game with how much grinding I was doing I enjoyed the little cutscenes even if they weren’t voice acted like tales games.. this was a good game Magnolia is still the best bravely character 😝
I do love actual fleshed out side quests, so I would agree I found them more annoying than enjoyable. But the game overall was a blast. My bf and I got our separate copies and we enthralled for weeks with it. The town stories were well done, but the overall was pretty generic. Only 2 good twists really had me flabbergasted, so I was happy with that.
I have the original two games but I haven't played them yet so I won't be getting this one. It looks monstrously long to me and I just don't think I have the time to put into it. But that doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to play it someday.
I loved this game. It gets criticized for its story being a rip-off of the older FF games, but I thought it was more of an homage of the older Final Fantasy games. The amazing music, likeable characters, and old school JRPG gameplay (with modern conveniences) make a great game. That said, the side quest do suck, and really don't add anything to the game. Oh, and this game is tough as nails!.

Hey men. When you gonna talk about tales series????
what I hate about this game is the job system, not by itself, it is done correctly but how tey merg it with the story, everytime you see a npc that has some particular cloth you automatically knows that you are going to fight him and that you will win a new job....
Cant say I disagree with anything said here. Couldnt have said it better myself really! Glad im not the only one annoyed by the weight system BS, dont wanna have to item management min/max right from the get go. Thats usually something I do when I really enjoy a game at the end, not right off start. Something about the brave system makes me feel like it could b better, something more like Octopath's break system.
Hated the first one, so doubt I'd like this. The combat was just too much to think about. I liked that back in the day, but now I'm all about just spamming the X button and getting through fights as quickly as possible.
The weight system was probably the worst part of the game in my opinion. Funny because a lot of reviews praised it, but i can't stand it. If I get a godly weapon I want to equip it!
Out of the three defaults this one has the most broken and unfair job system and leveling ever i finished this game using freelancer as my main job and sub jobs of 2 fighters 1 mage 1 healer and thats it. It was a good game but i wished they balance the jobs and stats more carefully hope they do better on the next installment
My first Bravely game I've played. Loved the gameplay loop and job customization. Using enemy weaknesses seemed pointless as later bosses have auto-counters attacks to them which could risk wiping out your party or getting 1 member killed from it easily. The main story bosses are easy as hell tho, while the optional bosses like nearly any JRPG especially after 1st ending are way harder haha. The difficulty options don't change enemy HP or their damage output, just makes enemy turns come up sooner (hard) or later (casual). But yes story is too basic, I didn't like that at all so stopped caring to finish it fully meh, even the 4 main characters facial designs are so plain looking. Seth looks like a generic NPC same for the rest. Meanwhile other characters mainly villains etc look thousand times better. The world is too tiny, same for towns and cities too, compare this to grander scale of xenoblade games, exactly. The model walking animations are so outdated and janky, why? Also performance on Switch is iffy, fps drops, loading in assets stutter a bit especially during various cutscenes. I loved the weight equipment system, literally any character can wear anything but the balance is weighted clothing. So you can have them wear light cloths to increase their weight limit, light clothes also makes them less likely to be attacked but will have lower defenses. Where as heavier clothes have better defenses but greatly increase being attacked. Its all of balance :3

While I agree that the majority of the side quests are lacklustre busy-work, some job classes are locked behind them. Better off doing them or checking guides to make sure you don't miss them!
I'd love to give this game a shot after I finish Nocturne HD!
I need to finally buy this
I trust your opinion so I'm adding this one to my list. I was a little iffy on it
Been waiting for a review so I can buy this game lol
I love this game with how much grinding I was doing I enjoyed the little cutscenes even if they weren’t voice acted like tales games..
this was a good game Magnolia is still the best bravely character 😝
I like the animation of the first one much better
Now I want to play it.. damn it. I'll get a switch one day lol
When will you able to play xenoblade 2 ?
Also , do you planning to get cold steel IV on Switch ?
Damn dude I didn’t know you even had a Switch
Couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to the story, but the game was still a lot of fun
Is it cheating to call Trails of Cold Steel 4 my game of the year? ;)
The PC version just released in April, and that's what I've been playing.
what I hate about this game is the job system, not by itself, it is done correctly but how tey merg it with the story, everytime you see a npc that has some particular cloth you automatically knows that you are going to fight him and that you will win a new job....
“People and their whiney, side-questy problems.”
Cant say I disagree with anything said here. Couldnt have said it better myself really! Glad im not the only one annoyed by the weight system BS, dont wanna have to item management min/max right from the get go. Thats usually something I do when I really enjoy a game at the end, not right off start. Something about the brave system makes me feel like it could b better, something more like Octopath's break system.
ill buy it
I find the boss difficulty really exaggerated in this game
Hated the first one, so doubt I'd like this. The combat was just too much to think about.
I liked that back in the day, but now I'm all about just spamming the X button and getting through fights as quickly as possible.
Such a good game. :D
I just can’t get into the chibi art style honestly. Couldn’t play the originals either
That's a shame cause it is a really good game
I feel like this review is a personal attack on me
My first Bravely game I've played.
