Way of the Rat, Hunter Ninja Bear, several other indy books. Chuck Dixon has created his own characters and written them well. This comic was just fine. The writing was fine and certainly better than ISOM. At this point your jealousy is very transparent.

He also wrote Vengeance of Bane which is the excellent origin story of Bane. It's so good it makes you wish there was a Kid Bane miniseries. But Vito might prefer Vengeance of Bane pt 2, where it's post-Knightfall and Bane is a washed-up, grotesquely overweight loser getting bullied in jail. That might chime with Vito more, I feel like he would maybe get something valuable out of it (the desire to shed excessive fat deposits from one's body)

I've read Isom 1&2 as well as Alphacore. I can say that Alphacore was the best of the trio so far (ISOM 2 is also really fun) but I'll add that Alphacore is firmly playing in the sandbox that Isom did the heavy lifting in setting up.
But Chuck Dixon has some really great villain designs and the plot was really big really high energy superhero action. If that's what you've been missing in modern books but you haven't grabbed Isom then I would recommend you try Alphacore and see if that book doesn't make you want to read the Isom books.

Vito respectfully, the target audience of examples you gave(Naruto and One Piece) is for young teens. Shounen Mangaka deliberately dumb down the story and give their MCs overdone grandiose goals due to their target audience comprehension levels and attention span.
You're a grown man, why do character's need to have grandiose overdone goals for you to be able to resonate with said character?
Futhermore, if you're going to use a manga category, The Rippaverse target audience is more comparable to Seinen manga.

    • @Avx829
      @Avx829 ปีที่แล้ว +6

These are good points. I don't need the motivations/goals of every character that is out there. Most of them have the same motivations and just learning about it is boring. Most people don't have some big deep reason behind why they do things they just developed a moral system with rules that work for them and then go do things. We all understand that bad guys are bad and they should be stopped and if a super hero is somewhat good then I understand they might have some vested interest in stopping the bad guy.

@@Avx829 Agreed bro the I whole I want to be... the Hokage/Pirate King/Number one hero/Wizard King/Shaman King/Pokemon Master/God of the new world...etc gets really boring imo.
I get wanting to root for a character but that's the most superficial reason to root for a character. The journey is more important than the destination imo.
Which is probably why I vibe with Seinen manga/anime more...One of, if not my outright favourite Seinen anime of all time is Monster. Grandiose goals are no were to be seen in Kenzo Tenma or most of the characters... A drastically less grounded and more popular Seinen... One Punch Man... Saitama has 0 grandiose goal too. Yet I and a lot of other people think Saitama is written better and is far more likable than someone like Deku who has a obvious goal.

@@alicemoon3119 Apologies for the long post. You would have a point that I picked the low hanging fruit by highlighting Naruto and One Piece if I didn't highlight shounen as a whole.
An MC pursuing a grandiose status based goal(god/king/champion/number 1)is the shounen cookie cutter formula.
What Vito and presumably you make a mistake with, is that you think manga is just shounen and all western comics should follow the shounen cookie cutter formula.
When you sell a product you have to think about your demographic...
Q:Did Eric July pick a publishing company like Shonen Jump that primarily target young teens?
      A:No.
Q:Is Eric July's TH-cam audience and the people that backed his "anti-woke" Rippaverse comic campaign young teens?
      A:No
Then why would possibly hold The Rippaverse to the same standards as shonen. Thats weird to me. Compare it to its manga counterpart... Seinen, where it typically doesn't use the cookie cutter formula.

I like manga and western comics. I like Rippaverse and Cyberfrog. Some stories require mysteries to to be unveiled. Sometimes you dont get a character played out exactly what you anticipate. Sometimes its good to explain everything in one page sometimes its best to understand a characters motivation without explaining anything and you have to wait until issue 6 to find out who they are. Sometimes you have to wait til the end of the series to get what the character was doing all along. Sometimes the twist happens mid way through and sometimes the twist is at the end. Sometimes you have to find out a characters actions in a spinoff series from another characters point of view. So when you explain "Who is this guy? Where is his motivations? Why are they doing it? How are they doing it? Whats their main goal? Whats the end goal of their goal?". So with that you cant expect EVERYTHING to be explained in ONE comic. If thats the case it would be the shortest story in a mini series or a continuous mainline series. So all this complaining seems more that you hate Eric and its easy to shit on his story. So your complaints are just whiny when you could just not constantly rail on Eric but its good that you did because it just proves how dishonest, disingenuous, spiteful, and you genuinely just want to hate on Eric.

Yes, having the characters show their motivation or even talk about it is better than the "lol, so random" of these comics. Characters do things in here just because they are what you do in a superhero comic. Like Avery donning his costume. Why? He doesn't want to be a hero, he doesn't want to protect his identity, he doesn't care about Jasmine. So he got his costume because superheroes wear costumes and it's a superhero comic.

For a new company, newly in the space, it is actually pretty good.
It's not great, but I look at it like the first episode first season of a new show. If it progresses, it's heading in a good direction.
As to why Alphacore is doing what they do, I thought they summed that up pretty well when when Solari is arguing with the Chief. Solari is stuck in his military past. He is trying to take a military approach to protecting civilians, and as ex-military, he doesn’t get why those optics suck.
He sees civilians seeing him patroling as a good thing (overwatch as he calls it, a military term), and he says so. It is the first issue, so I expect a bit of slow play as to motivation and power sets. But I felt like the gist of it was laid out.
One thing I found egregiously stupid is the scene where Galvin lures the jail guard in by asking for a light. What is it 1965? Virtually every state ptison has banned smoking, and even if they hadn't, it would still be treated as a privilege not afforded to a psycho who attacked several cops.
I think it can get better, but they need to build a writing team that is encouraged to nitpick.

    • @nathanjora7627
      @nathanjora7627 ปีที่แล้ว

The response was silly but then again it is fair to point out that motivation is a pretty important part of a character, it helps shape our understanding of them and allows writers to come up with narratively satisfying dynamics, both between allies and between enemies.
It doesn’t have to be explicit, and it doesn’t even have to be the why they’re doing this job out of all jobs, but you’d still need to understand their values, both in terms of moral and in terms of desires.
Edit : and now that I think about his video a bit more, he did give a decent argument in the video about why superpowered individuals aren’t directly comparable to cops in regard to how straightforward their motivations are, a cop is the same as anyone else except they chose to work for law enforcement, it’s not like there’s a quick and easy way to use their powers for selfish reasons, and if anything them becoming police officers is what put them over regular people in the first place. A contrario superpowered individuals have an edge over almost everybody else, which gives them temptations that nobody else has, so there’s a much greater incentive as an author to explain why your characters decided to use their powers for good rather than evil or neither.
Still not an irredeemable flaw but at the bare minimum it’s a pretty huge missed opportunity.

Good guys....a bunch of weirdos jumping around in pajamas following their professor. None of them had any real personalities. Their reason for being there is to fight magneto, and that was it. No real debth until probably past #100. You will probably find similar issues infact, in MOST early comics.

The shady character is tasked on taking out the others with a "accident" that results in all of them gaining powers. The shady cop learns that the police department intentionally had him involved to take him out as well, the corruption runs deep in the city council so the cop turns on the whole city. The other three cops have always been disgusted with the corruption and here on out vow to stop their old partner and clean the city's corruption by becoming better symbols of justice through being superheros. That's a base idea that I came up with in seconds on the spot. The ground work was already there based on the premise of this story.

Shounen is designed for younger audiences, deliberately to attract them with less-intense stories. Comparatively, the first chapter of Berserk doesn't do much, but outline Guts' current situation, yet Guts is immediately compelling.
Your criticisms are valid, but without outlining WHY they are that way, it comes as being bad-faith. That Alphacore has a setup for more development is fine. It encourages more investment later. However, the story sets up (A) stakes for Alphacore as Wolves-On-A-Leash to the public and (B) their personal dynamics in the future.

You sent a tweet advocating that your followers bully Rippaverse fans. Eric July never advocated for aggression. I forgot I was subscribed, time to fix that, I don’t support those who advocate bullying

Vito, i like you. I’m a Patreon. I genuinely feel you need to be more gracious with your criticism of this book. The writing isn’t as obviously bad as Isom, the art is solid. If you continue with the insane nitpicking and unjustified bitching public opinion will turn against you. Be the bigger man than Eric

@@VitoTwo well, like I said, maybe consider how you’re coming off. Eric is a lolcow because of he’s over reaction to minor things and absurd cynical criticism, right? Don’t do the same thing

Chuck Dixon was taken off detective comics in the early 2000s for lack of sales and hasn’t been on a hot book since. Why do people think he’s some titan of the industry

Eric July was a guest of the "You Are Here" TH-cam show.
I would listen to him speaking and was turned off.
He had nothing to say, and seemed desperate for attention.
So when I found out he was writing comics, during a time of BLM and George Floyd, I knew this was exploitation.
You keep wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt.
If people really want these comics, I think that only proves that comic book fans are desperate to have just anything right now.
Many buy for the potential resale value as well.
Many had a fetish for black people during a woke movement.
There's a void that consumers want to have filled and the big companies aren't meeting expectations.
    Mediocrity is not meteoric.
If there's any success here it's due to expectations being low.
It likely helps that Nerdrotic keeps promoting July.

I definitely agree about the the big companies not meeting expectations. I stopped buying modern Marvel and DC in 2021 and just get older stuff from them (early 00s and prior). I got ISOM 1 and 2 and liked them ok. I have Alphacore, but haven't read it yet. I get there is a fetish by some for black people, but to his credit Eric isn't constantly talking about how oppressed he is. I'm black and 43 and I am so tired of hearing black people half my age drone on and on about things they never experienced, but the hyping of a character/writer simply for being black or checking a certain box is a real thing, but I don't think Eric is doing that since he is a lifelong comic fan. I'm also a big Nerdrotic fan so I can say that does help. There are other indies I want to check out as well.
