  • Cloudland Canyon State Park surrounds a gorge on the western side of Lookout Mountain in the southern Appalachians. This is one of Georgia's most visited state parks. It is located about 1/2 hour from Chattanooga, so it serves as a nice base from which to visit the Tennessee Aquarium, Rock City, Ruby Falls and much more. We have camped there four times and will, no doubt, return in the future. The hiking at Cloudland Canyon is superb. The Overlook Trail is an easy one-mile hike along the edge of the canyon with fantastic views into the gorge and beyond. The Waterfalls Trail provides access to Cherokee Falls and Hemlock falls. Be aware that these falls have little water flow during dry periods, so ask the park personnel about water levels. It is less than a two-mile hike, but it involves some 600 stairs that make it quite a challenge to climb back out. Instead of making a return hike on this trail, we have twice chosen to continue on the Sitton's Gulch trail which is a beautiful three-mile downhill hike that passes additional waterfalls and eventually exits the canyon. Leave a vehicle at the Canyon Park Drive parking lot and you will avoid the strenuous climb back out of the gorge . . . and those 600 stairs. The West Rim Loop trail is a moderately strenuous loop, half of which follows the rim of the canyon with many additional overlooks and fantastic rock formations to explore. Put this one on your bucket list for exploring Georgia! Comments and suggestions are welcome.
