Great video Chad. I will start doing this on my channel. We can't let our fantastic hobby wither away. Clear skies bud.

Please do! Add the link to the community post tab so everyone knows and we can point to a spot for us all for the subs and data and support each other. Thanks

Finally! You highlighted the elephant in the room. My channel helps people learn the very basics of astrophotography but it is very difficult to capture data to start the classes on processing images. Especially as right now we’re in the hurricane season.
Hopefully your video makes an impact where we can all learn and help each other for free or at least very affordable prices. Keep up the good fight Chad.

Thank you. I have asked people to share data on the community tab and the comments section of this video. I sure hope we can get a lot more movement and then try to go after these online services that are ignoring us plebs lol

I have the good, the bad and the ugly data, and I'm willig to share! I'd love too see someone process my data. Pm me if you are interested.

Yep, I agree very much. As a southern hemisphere guy myself, when I started out and kept hearing about all these objects in the north that we simply cannot see I thought wouldn’t it be great if someone up there would share their data (perhaps in exchange for my own data from our southern targets that aren’t visible above the equator).

For sure man and TH-camrs are doing such a great job of showing their processing skills but when you don’t have the material to follow along the amount of knowledge transfer is crushed. So what’s the point? I’m glad everyone seems to be taking this well and my big hope is we can mush the online services to make them more affordable for the masses.

I would be interested in that... and yes, the hobby is expensive. I just got an EdgeHD 9.25..... not cheap. Plus all the extras to get that to work right like OAG, and better guide camera...

@@calimark7448 I'll have to look into a sensible way to share the files (they're huge). I also have an EdgeHD, though mine is just 8".

As I'm just returning to the hobby, I am amazed at what what gear is available and what people are doing with the gear. But as I consider getting into AP, the cost is truly prohibitive. It's wonderful if people are willing to share or charge a nominal amount, but they've got a lot of money and time invested as well.
I'm not sure where the challenge is in the hobby now; capture, process, presentation? How many photos of M31 do we need? I find myself wishing I could find some citizen science to add to some body of knowledge.
For now, I'll process my SeeStar (a modern marvel IMO) data with the free and low cost tools that I can learn on. Maybe, with a windfall, I'll try AP; I think for me the challenge will be the capture.

Building and testing rigs is kind of a right of passage. I’ve done it for so many years and wasted so many nights with issues. It was all fun and taught me a lot. Sharing data and or remote data is meant to supplement us and what we can capture. For example you can enjoy your data and now you have mine. So you can maybe trial pixinsight for free and you have a video to walk you right through. Help you make a decision on if this is the way you’d like to go.

It’s very sad and they need to be called out by bigger channels. I will keep annoying them until we at least have better data at lower prices. If they want to keep trying to rent scopes out for $500 a night then whatever but come on lol

You make some great points. Sharing data, even some data will help keep the hobby growing and will lead to other sales. One troubling note is many TH-cam Astrophotographers seem to be posting less and less. Hopefully this is just temporary.

my RC channel has 12k subs. i make about $150 a month off it. $300 at its peak watch during RC drag racing. they all start i think with various asparations and then realize the juice is not worth the squeeze unless youre in it for the real and trying to grow and help. it also takes time. we have no kids..just dog and cats..i make quick videos to the point and dont worry about music and presentation. i just want the content to be consise and for the audio to be clear. ill leave the b roll and fancy stuff to the astrobackyards :)

Chad, you have a good point but you preach to the wrong target group - I mentioned this once when I interviewed Kevin Morefield - we Astro-TH-camrs are not the best or the most active Astrophotographers - we are just the loudest. 😅 So I might have a ton of videos out there, but I do not have a lot of data - I simply do not have much time to shoot stars as I need to shoot videos…. So you do not need to ask the TH-camrs for data, but the guys on Astrobin which have a zillion pics on there. But yes, we should do that and I have a crazy idea…… lets see……

    • @easyastroimages5818

Thank you Sacha. I would love to see some TH-camrs with bigger voices come out against the remote services to provide us with more affordable pricing options. That would be great. But I feel when we do these amazing tutorials that if we do not provide the data then the level of knowledge transfer is crushed and so in the end what did we accomplish with this tutorial ?

Hi Chad! I think you have a great point there. I have lots of good gear but the weather has been terrible and I have a physical disability that limits my ability to carry heavy gear around. But I do have data. I would be willing to put it in my channel and share it. I think it’s a great way to encourage people starting in the hobby. I tried telescope live and although I like the idea, the prices add up to a lot of money for the data they let you have access to. Other remote observatories are just out of my price range to afford. I think you are spot on with your comments. If you allow me to I will place a link back to your video on my channel on my next video coming up. Best regards Chad.

    Greetings Chad.
    Thanks for the great video.
I live in Zambia in the southern hemisphere.
I have always pined after the Dark Shark Nebula and have always wanted to image it.
Unfortunately, it never rises above the horizon in Lusaka, Zambia - so I was stumped 😠!
Lo and behold, you came along and provided free data!!
I downloaded the data and had a go at processing it. I used the usual Xterminator family of scripts, as well as the Seti Astro scripts.
I am very pleased with the resulting image and have posted it on my Astrobin page (you are, of-course duly acknowledged for the source of the data!).
Please advise if there is a southern hemisphere target that you cannot image in the north, that you’d like me to image and I will gladly do so, and donate the data for you to share on your platform.
I hope you’ll take the trouble to have a look at my Astrobin image of the Shark Nebula and give me your thoughts.
You are one-of-a-kind and your heart is in the right place and you are a very generous soul…
Thanks 🙏🏿 and wishing you the very best.
Keep well and continue your great TH-cam content !

Makes a lot of sense Chad although here in the UK clear skies have been pretty sporadic lately apart from when we have no astronomical darkness. I haven't shared data as yet but if I get plenty of time on objects I might start sharing it. Mind you I only shoot OSC so is that considered a bad thing or are people happy to have OSC & mono data to play with? I know a few TH-camrs have remoted in to guys in the southern hemisphere before now to Glenn astrobloke being one so maybe that could become an option who knows.

    • @easyastroimages5818

Hey there. Yeah you guys have it bad for sure. Glenn and Logan did some work together and shared years ago and so did glen and Joe from USA but Joe is not in the hobby anymore. Always been a big fan of astrobloke. Hey osc data is good to me:) I’ve always had a hard time justifying buying a mono setup due to lack of clear nights

Lot of ways to look at this "issue". Not sure it exists anywhere but on youtube.
Anyways, my take is if you can't afford the boat, fishing rod, tacle, bait and trip to the lake, maybe just pick up your fish at safeway and take a pic of the finished dish. No one will know you didn't catch it. Or care, really. Suggesting those that do have all the gear should give you some of their fish...maybe.😉
Anyways, processing is probably at least 80% of the success of an image, but only 30% of the process.
If you can't afford the gear, it's maybe not for you😉

Not sure anyone would want my data, only an unmodified Canon 6D through a vintage 8" Meade SCT, under Bortal 3 night skies, from a high desert location. It could be a starting point for some , especially if you live in a cloudy area. Also, you can download NASA data for free to process.

hey dont sell yourself to short!! but if you want to get better at the hobby then there really isnt a better way then following a video alongside the youtuber and process it with them and then ask follow up ?s but if they dont give you the data then its hard to learn. you just watch and say well ok?? also puts more pressure on these over priced online services

Some youtubers need to stop promoting and justifying products with high prices ffs the cost of mounts and cameras is obscene considering all these new players on the market. they are deliberately overpriced and this is because they have certain youtubers justifying their prices.

I see the influence come in a lot more but coming from the rc hobby the real part is nobody is constantly running out and dropping hundred or thousands of dollars when new stuff drops. I hate that some lower level TH-camrs will think that is how you can grow a channel and it’s def not the way. Easy way to go in debt
