You lied Drake ! *You lied about your ghostwriters and your accents all is perjury!* *you lied about the only artist that can offer you some help* *fuck a rap battle, this a long life battle wit yoself!*
Literally cried! Means so much to me an unknown artist, putting all this work into something I love so much wit little to no validation to hear from one of my favorite podcaster/youtuber that you rock wit it!?…. Another level of appreciation man! Thank you!
Getting through the entirety of TPAB to me pays off at the refrain on u aint gotta lie where he just says "u aint gotta try so hard". Something about it is just so comforting and relaxing, 10/10 song imo
"The fashion Police wear my heart on my sleeve" line is also about how he's outting his heart on display for people to judge rather than his outward appearances, which ties into Mortal Man where he asks if his fanbase really understand his message and character and if they'll stay loyal even if his character is attacked.
There are times where I wish I could talk to the Talking Heads of the social media spaces, because this album and more particularly the song I came at a point where I was really depressed. My parents split, my mom thought I was old enough for her to take a traveling job and only saw her 3 days of the week which waned down to 1 to none, all in my senior year of highschool My dad didn’t make it to my graduation, etc. so when I turned 18 my first tattoo was the i of this song. It really gave me something to look at with shit getting worse as time went on , but things eventually got better. The single version resonated with me from the “I lost my head I must’ misread what the good book said” as I also questioned faith and everything during that period. Sorry comment goers, this is what art can do, relive a time, but be happy that you went through it and it molded you. This especially true since I was listening to c4, OD and KL.EP in middle school
Idk~I like it~really dragging the absurdist humor from deep beneath the bars. Perfect word to sum it up. Honestly, now that I’m thinking this deeply about it~you should charge us more than a buck for the rizz lol
Wasn't me, but I heard someone say that the song "u" breaks you down so that "i" could build you back up, and I never stopped thinking about that. Edit: I also appreciate you adding historical context to Kendrick's spoken word poem at the end of "i" cuz now I have a much more profound love for the album version because of it.
To me, it’s that black mom discernment and protection and not her dragging Kendrick. This is one voice that results in Kendrick’s wisdom and ability to easily read people.
4:34 Awww, you didn't talk about one of my favorite parts on the album, time to yap - So the second time Kendrick says "You sound like the Feds homie", he says it a bit more forcefully than the first time, then cuts out for a good few seconds of silence before dropping back into that flow in the third verse continuing the point of the song, but not before saying "what do you got to offer, tell me before we off ya, put you deep in that coffin" So, IMO, the song cuts out right after he accuses you of being a Fed, then stares you in the soul before basically going "relax, it's not that serious, it's not life or death" like it might be if you were the wrong sort of Fed. As an awkward young man that verse really hammered in the point that social interaction is not life or death, but not being real will kill you real quick. Or something like that, idk, keep up the good work wing wong.
tbh i will always be one of my favorite songs, the beat just goes so hard and the message it sends is so different and amazing. plus the flows through the song also goes crazy
All I can say is where the hell I've been?! I've always heard this album was badass and only heard a few songs but never the entire album. I feel ashamed to be a Kendrick fan and never heard this album in its entirety. But I thank you Derapy for this video so I can add it to my Spotify. 🙏🏽
Ngl after you talked about this album back during the beef was what made me listen to more songs besides “alright” good recommendation, great vid as always Deryk.
“We live in a laugh factory every time we mention your name” I knew in 2015 who he was talking to! Good to see someone go back and cover it, so many people jumping on the wagon but eventually the weight of the lyrics will dump the simple fans!
Listen I'm more than happy you continue to cover this album.....honestly I really can't wait for the cover of Mortal Man, that song in itself needs an entire video to fully break it down...ill never forget the tears I was in when I first heard it
i is my favorite song, ever, period. When I needed it, it was there. Depression tried to kill me, and this was one of many things that got me through it, especially remembering Kendrick is almost the same age as me. I didn't go through anything like he did growing up, but to anyone out there going through it, that doesn't matter. Keep at it, things will change, depression and dark times happen to you, they aren't you. Personally though I prefer the SNL version the most, because it really shows Kendrick performing his heart out, but the single and the album versions are wonderful in their own way. The album version pushes much further into black excellence to fit with the theme of TPAB, while the single opens it up more to all people everywhere, while the SNL performance makes it clean and brings more spirituality into it. Best song ever. You ain't gotta lie is fantastic. I wish I had anything more valuable to say about it, but it really just is something I enjoy more than I have something to say about. But, really, if he does i at the stadium concert, it will be worth the price, though it would be nice to see SZA too.( ꈍᴗꈍ)
First of all, thanks for inspiring me to revisiting Pac. I also listened to Ice Cube’s track. I’ve never heard that one, so it was refreshing to listen to all three artists’ work in chronological order. Your analysis and review is so damned good. Respect. Lastly, I listened to Heir Wallace’s entire album. The fine arts professor in me could not bypass a request to critique an artist’s work. What TF was my favorite for the record but I have notes on a lot more. I feel weird putting it here since it’s a KDot centered analysis. I would have preferred to leave it under the respective tracks but the comments are turned off. All in all, it is pretty solid.
So we use DistroKid to put out our music, when you do they make a music page for you and upload your music on that channel that also doesn’t let you comment, idk why, but if you type “Neckofthewoodsent Heir Wallace” our page should pop up, it’s “Neckofthewoodsesnt” ima put a link here for you! Thank you by the way! I leave our session for “Who tf” th-cam.com/video/0DfK8mCJDSs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fW23nC5Qg_UQg76p
I feel that. Really like the beat on the single though! The live version feels like a response to the lukewarm reaction the song got on release too (some people just don't care for positivity 😢)

On real, ever since Drake was offended by the Control verse, I always thought the 2nd verse on "you ain't gotta lie" was directed at him.
Exactly what I thought back when I heard the album on release night 😂😂
It was! Kendrick and Drake was already engaged in sneak dissing for 1-2 years at that point!
