In response to the negative reference to Liverpool calling it "That place over there" some years back, Liverpool people referred to Birkenhead in a negative manner, calling it "The one eyed city" as It never had a City face ... as its just a town! that makes it 1 - 1.
I wondered how they got to use the Wallasey Road for a timed rally section. We set the 4th fastest time there in about 1970, in a Sunbeam Rapier, when we found that the Chicane was not so bendy as it looked. . . .
With reference to the ferries, the Monks of Birkenhead Priory were given the right to charge travellers from Chester to other parts of the North West by Edward II, when Birkenhead was a growing town and the place 'Over There" was a hamlet by a muddy stream. The right to chage to be rowed across the river explains why the tlll booths on the two Tunnels are on the Wirral side....!
I am from Liverpool I have relations on the Wirral, Iv had relationships with women on the Wirral ... I love the Wirral, I support Tranmere Rovers. So I take great offense when you refer to Liverpool (my city) as "That Place Over There" ... We both live on the banks of the River Mersey, that's why this area is called Merseyside I have no negative feelings to the Wirral or its people in fact I feel at one with you, so don't be so narrow minded. You mentioned the New Brighton Tower, it was dismantled in 1919, you forget to mention The Tower Ball Room that was burned down in 1969, you mentioned that the Beatles (from Liverpool) played there ... You forgot to mention that New Brighton F.C. who played in the football league had a stadium right next to the Tower Ball Room. You forgot to mention that the Wirral Metropolitan Borough Town Hall was once The Wallasey Town Hall. You forgot to mention "Eggy Ferrey" the once Egremont Promanade jutting out into the Mersey and the ferry terminal the same goes for New Brighton Promenade jutting out into the Mersey with a Ferry terminal ended in 1971 You forgot to mention the New Brighton was a vibrant holiday resort up to the early 1960s and faded through that decade I have walked & cycled that route going beyond Leasowe onto West Kirby and the Wirral Way back to Hooton.
