    Hey!
    I love that you put the ants on video. I have many ants around here in Santa Clarita California, I'm sure you know it since you're local, or are you were, but I film them often and I have gained a bit of shame about it because people think I'm crazy for filming ants. They just don't see how fascinating those little
    Ants are. So kudos to you brother, because he recognize how interesting ants are👍🏻

    Note: Practice feathersticks and firemaking in general. Sometimes it's discouraging to fail, but even the match was unfamiliar for him.

      I tried feathersticking the log itself (dumb, I know) but everything was so damn humid and there were no sticks thick enough in the desert! Hahaha

    I just subscribed you guys are great. where were you camping?

  • @TheSunkenGrave
    @TheSunkenGrave 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Enjoyed the video but I do have a serious question about which I have noticed on many a camping video. Why do so many campers try to start campfires by expending the energy on such things as feathering sticks and using flint-like spark fire starters? I have never had a problem starting a fire but I have utilized a wind resistant Bic lighter and a fire starter I bought at the Kroger grocery store down the street which consist of some compressed materials of which I have no idea the contents but it works every single time. If the idea is simply to have a fire then why use sparks when you can simply use fire to start a camp fire? This whole scraping steel against flint among feathered sticks or whatever it is, I will never understand. It certainly doesn't seem to be nearly as efficient nor effective.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree that using a BIC lighter would have definitely gotten the job done faster. The truth is I sort of like the challenge of being able to do it manually with tools. Granted, it's probably not as satisfying as using a friction rod or flint and steel, but it's something that I just enjoy doing : )

    Shavings are a good material that catch a flame from other tinder. You need something fine and flammable to catch a spark from a ferro rod. Something like processed cedar bark, cotton, fuzzy dry plant material, etc. Drier lint is a great material for catching sparks as well.
    Personally I use fatwood dust and shavings because we have an abundance of fatwood producing pine trees around here.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That probably would have made everything a lot easier! I actually broke my ferro rod on this trip. The damn thing just snapped right in half! Thanks for the tips! Definitely keep it in mind next time! -Thomas

    Tell us Thomas, did you use matches or the fire steel for the fire in the morning? Also, why do I have a hand when I scroll on the video?

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both, and actually my fire steel snapped in half when I was trying to get it going in the morning. I ended up burning a wad of paper and all my kindling just to get a little fire going. It was a nightmare too with all that wind! -Thomas

  • @peglegthered
    @peglegthered 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excuse me for being so critical, but it's reasonable to just use a bic lighter to get your kindling started. It's just car camping. Props for the cooking though!

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree, but the paper we used to try and start the fire wouldn't even catch! It was like trying to start a fire in a thick, misty fog. Thanks for watching! -Thomas

    Great to see another enjoyable Southern California episode. I'll have to check this out on my next trip down there.
    I was just down to Anza Borrego hiking about of the PCT that runs through the park. The wildflowers are everything the media has reported, especially in the backcountry. If you have a chance to get out there in the next bit, you may find them still in bloom. Everything from tiny little flowers you have to kneel down to see properly to 6m tall agave flower stalks, in all shares and combinations.
    The deserts of the Southwest are really inspiring. Thanks for sharing them with us.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  7 ปีที่แล้ว
