- It really is a whole Universe they've created there, isn't it? This is my first venture into exploring BU and after watching the music video to 'I Need U' I'm now curious to see how the story arch continues!

I realize my comment was worded incorrectly and I’ve edited it, I meant that v’s father (or stepfather?) in the storyline would be the one with the drinking problem, not his father in real life.
The lyrics to this song do not correlate directly to BU. BTS dropped pronouns when referencing who they love starting around Love Yourself Era in 2017 so that only applies to their more recent music. BTS label BigHit does not prohibit them from dating, they're more liberal than other companies but BTS keeps their love lives private and we respect that.
Six of the boys in this represent issues that young people face, and not just young people. RM = Poverty, Suga = Suicide, J-Hope = Drug addiction, Jimin = Depression, V = abuse/child abuse, JK = Homelessness. Jin is kind of the glue that holds them all together, trying to help his friends. They can forget their individual issues when they're together but, as it happens in reality, they don't usually tell one another just how bad things really are for each of them. Also, if no one has already told you, the six are paired together in this universe. Each of them has one person out of the group that they are particularly close to, although they're all pretty close in the BU. The links to each of the individual stories are stronger with each pairing, but they're all linked at least a small amount, since they're all friends. Oh, and I think you might have missed it but JK was hit by a car, right about the same time as V killed his father. Also, you'll want to make sure that you watch each video to the very end. Sometimes there are extra clues during credits or at the end of the video. There's one vide that has the end scene cut from the Big Hit official one, but people will make sure to tell you about it when you get to that one. Let us know is you want spoilers and we'll explain things that are clear in whichever video you watch.

For the BU. I Need U shows how the boys are only happy when they are together and gives you glimpses into their own painful back stories and struggles. It's always tricky to read but V's father is a violent drunk who abuses V and his sister. V finnally snaps when he catches his father beating his sister this time and kills him.

Sadly the dating thing is a cultural thing in the entertainment world in Korea BUT as BTS is gaining such global recognition and popularity we can say if someday not far they decide to officialy date there wont be no problem with fans, at least interantional fans, only a part of korean fans are like that. I know for sure if they dont date it is more bcs of a personal decision i dont really think they are obligated to not date but rather they do it bcs they are responsible and aware that such thing can easily become a scandal in korea. Again thats in korea. That doesnt mean they are not dating privately.

As someone who loves stories (I am a school librarian), I can't tell you how much I love this or how brilliant I think it is.
Storytelling has evolved over the millennia. When books became more common, some people felt it was going to rot people's brains because they no longer had to memorize stories. This is the next evolution of storytelling to me.
Big Hit has done a phenomenal job incorporating all different kinds of media to create a story within a fully realized world that reaches inside you and won't let go of your heart. The publishing industry has dipped their toes in this, but they should look at Big Hit for how it should be done.
It makes me cry so much I haven't even been able to get past Chapter 3 of BTS Story.
The most beautiful moment in life is actually their album ,in which this song was there.
I think this is one of the most powerful MV. like you said, this is like a short movie.
As a fairly new fan I was feeling a bit overwhelmed to start getting into the BU storyline, just subscribed to tag along with you on this journey! It's such an interesting concept, BTS and Big Hit are something else, so creative!

So some help and advice for you. First off V doesn’t have an alcohol problem, it’s his father who does and who he sees beating his sister. Basically in that scene he had had enough of his father beating them and decided to strike back. He had no pre planned intention though of killing him- it was just heat of the moment.
As for all the rest they’ve (minus Jin) pretty much gave up on life when they’re in scenes on their own. That’s why you saw Jungkook not fighting back, Jimin in the tub, J-Hope with pills, SUGA setting his room on fire etc. Only when they’re together are they happy.
Secondly, the story line more matches up with the music video than the actual song. In other words it’s better to ignore the song lyrics if you want to get the storyline.
Thirdly, look at things like pairs. Who’s really close to who? As well as symbols. Attention to detail is key.
Fourth, always watch the full video till the end. There’s bits right at the end you need to see.
The timeline is complicated so some find taking notes is good to work it out.
And lastly, ask ARMY if you need help. We’ve all been though the ‘what the hell is happening?’

I’ve been looking in the comments for someone talking about the “no dating rule”, but I didn’t find any. So, for what I know that rule applied when they were trainees, I’m guessing that was so they didn’t have distractions (I’m speaking on bts case I don’t know how others agencies works).
They maintain their live in private, and the few times they have talked about it, they said that they are really busy to date.
The “girl” part, I remember I theory that said the girl was about “anima”, like the feminine part of men personalities.

-J Hope ego his mother abandoned him and he dropped in the drug’s and depression
- Suga ego his mother died in the fire and all times passed alone he dropped to the depression
- JungKook ego his mother divorce his violent father but she remarried but JungKook ego don’t accept it and he run away from his house but he get bullied and he beat up by the bad guy’s
- Jimin ego his family ignores him and in a couple of times and he dropped in depression
-Jin ego he is just a boy who he try to express himself to talk to people but in times he depressed
- Namjoon ego his family became poor whereas his family was rich so he run away from his house

This song has nothing to do with girls... they wrote it to be about them and their bond... which is why the visuals in the video show hardships when they’re alone but happy and free when together. The lyric says “I need you girl,” bc they thought it sounded to empty just to “I need u” so any word they wanted to use just didn’t feel with the song I guess . It’s why the actual name of the song is “I need u,” and not “I need u girl” bc it’s about needing someone but that you’re gonna be there for them too. Girl is just a place holder representing someone and whoever they want to feel that way towards .. it’s not that serious

hi, i just stumbled across your channel and subscribed!😊 i just wanna give my two cents regarding the dating thing you mentioned. apparently, the boys aren't prohibited to date unlike other artists from other companies but they don't really share that part of their lives to the army, which is totally fine, that's their personal lives and we need to respect that(i personally doesn't care about their dating life, that's none of my business). i've seen the side of army that are crazy obsessed with the boys to the point that they WILL definitely get mad if they were associated with anyone. personally, that's so unsettling for me. i, and a lot of people, actually doesn't think like that. in fact, there's this ongoing inside joke among armys that RM is actually married and have kids lmao and i think that shows that a lot of us are cool with them dating, but that still won't erase the fact that A LOT of armys out there are delusional and possessive LOL

Bts not using specific pronouns in most of their songs doesn't have to do with them not allowed to date, every kpop idols even the earlier generations of idols have songs like that for example "I got a boy" by snsd.
+ bts contract to the label doesn't include that they can't date. They were told and suggested it's better not to for their own and their partner's sake but they are allowed to if they want (they probably are secretly dating lol).

Actually, I'm glad that u thought that V had drinking problems. It's actually his dad. He was being very abusive to V's sister so that's why you see his dad pushing her around and then V comes in and hits him on the head and then stabbing him to death

Jin plays a huge role in The Bangtan Universe, he's sort of the main protaganist you could say. If you plan on continuing the storyline, I highly advice you to pay very close attention to everything he does. Even in this video there are major clues surrounding his character.
I mentioned previously in a earlier comment that when it comes to the usage of the word "girl" in their songs, it sometimes is in reference to ARMY. I also said that there are times when it's neither directed to ARMY or "a real girl" either, but I didn't really give an example of such occurences. The song "I Need U" is one of those examples, the word is also used in reference to the relationship between the members. So why the usage of the word "girl"? Well, I don't have the exact answer to that question but if I would take a guess, I think it has to do with how the music industry work as a whole. Songs that can be categorized as "love songs" have always been proven to sell better. In this instance it is therefore a smart tactic and cover up in order to sell records, not just to ARMY but to other people outside the fandom as well, that either don't know of or care to find out about the Bangtan Universe storyline.
As someone else had mentioned already, they also sometimes refrain from using gendered language all together in their songs. One of Jimin's solo songs called "Serendipity", which was co-written by R.M., is an example of that. R.M. has said himself in interviews that the song was written with the intention of being gender-neutral.
The members do date but they keep that information private - if you don't count all the times J-Hope has accidentally outed members for dating 🙄 * seriously Hobi...? I can understand once but OK... you know I love you my dearest Hobi-Wan Kenobi but here (hands over a can) - have some Sprite for the sake of world peace! Abt the dating thing. Other groups in kpop do tend to use pronouns like her, and words like girl, baby etc. It's not that 'that' is a problem as far as I am concerned. I think there is no problem in using those in Korea. The dating rules are strict though but in BTS and Bighit's case they are pretty cool abt it. It's just that they are far too busy, especially now, to have a love life (as addressed by the members themselves and we do see tht they have almost no free time) and that's just really sad to me. Even if they are found to be with a girl (friend or otherwise) they are faced with extreme criticism and hate from obsessive fans and media. So more than the company and it's rules, the Korean public, media and their fans have more effect on their dating life.
Abt BTS not being gender specific in love songs, I feel they mainly write music from their experiences and I think that the above factor and also their busy schedules don't really allow them to have experiences in that matter. They used to have those kind of songs in their old discography which is from their past experiences but now, I'm doubtful they have any to write abt. Or maybe they prefer other genders too, who knows. (Pls educate and correct me if this sentence is offensive. I've tried to write it to the best of my abilities)
