- This is the finished product for my #RocklerTryThatChallenge project.
I had to try something new in order to participate in the challenge so I was like "Ok, I want to do the checkering!" but then I end up trying some more. Anyways, I have no idea what I can use this box for but it was fun and I learned a lot of things.
It's not perfect but it's the best I can do now. Thank you for watching!

(You may have revealed a solution to the economic problem I've seen of amazing full size pieces being worth less than the cost of the wood used to make them.) There is everything to love and nothing to hate about this. The design and execution are…exquisite.
I’ve been woodworking for over 45 years - nearer 60 since I first picked up a hammer and chisel - and much of how you made this reminds me of that start when we had no power tools at all. Some imperfections were inevitable and, like your wabi-sabi, can actually show the human that made the piece.
Now, an aching worn-out body means I can no longer do many manual tasks in the shop. So, all the rough work is done by machines and I finish by hand.
Certainly on the UK, the dovetail joint was used in furniture making because a mechanical joint was essential as the chemical joints (glue) were unreliable over time. Now, with our standard of adhesives, dovetails are no longer required and are simply an aesthetic choice. I make the point that, if modern glues had been available to people such as Chippendale, then they would have used them and not spent money (time) having people cut dovetails.
It’s the first video of yours that I have come across. I subscribe to very few woodworking channels but I have subscribed, and liked, yours. I will be looking at your library and looking forward to more.

Wow, 45years of experience! Ever since I started woodworking and video editing a little over 2 years ago, I enjoy learning new things and nice people here always give me motivation to continue. It's kind of embarrassing to see my old videos but that's what I went through from almost zero experience so I hope you find something interesting, haha!

@@YRTi we should be thanking you for taking the time to make these videos and showing your journey from absolute starter to becoming proficient. It’s a journey we have all been on and I think it’s good for me, at least, to try and recapture some of the handwork that I did and you are doing. I’m lucky enough to have a large workshop and, as a legacy of running a sideline furniture business, I have every machine that I need plus too many sets of chisels, planes, marking tools etc. when I’m gone, my wife knows to donate most of it to those charities who run small places where people who have undergone mental trauma can find some peace in making things and mixing with others.

This is good format for instructions, not too long and still gives excellent idea how it was done. Box looks stunning as well, overall aesthetics fits nicely together.

I really love the kumiko, I thought it was a solid piece that you painstakingly chiseled out to form the basket weave design. The checkering turned out great, just adding it at the corner along with the handle detail......awesome!!! Your wood choice and finish is so pretty, it really looks like a high end piece. Congratulations on completing the challenge, I think it is fantastic.

Thank you:) Ah, Wabi Sabi is difficult to explain but I wanted or tried to express the negative thing like Wabishii / Sabishii that you can still appreciate how it is there by the misaligned shells but oh well, it's not there anymore.... haha.
Do you have a tutorial about making woven lattice panels or could you recommend another source for learning how to do it? Thank you

Magnificient cabinet and beautifull workmanship, but a small warning. Dirty minds do think dirty thoughts, and naming it the " Sailor Moon Box" does give a bit weird wibes😅. Besides it is slightly villainuous behaviour to but Sailor Moon behind the bars, keep a close eye on your wife.🙄😁

Off topic but are there any Western saws you prefer or would like? (Imagine Santa delivered it so money wasn't a barrier) Could you imagine ever integrating any to your toolbox? EG. Small high tpi dovetail, rip tenon etc. Just curious. :-)

With regards to western saws, sorry, I have no idea until I need one... In general, I'm a person who first use whatever it is, and then I find the use for it so yeah, I really don't know... So if I have to get one, I would choose one base on the looks, which has the most western look, haha.
