1997: Philadelphia Eagles vs Washington Redskins Remastered NFL HIghlights

  • Revisiting the 1997 season finale, the Redskins hosted the Eagles with playoff hopes on the line. Washington won an entertaining, high-scoring match-up, but would miss the playoffs by a whisker. The Redskins, with a tie on their record, missed the post-season cut by a half-game (doesn't that sound familiar?) but nonetheless would finish with a winning record for the second straight year.
    The defense was porous but made up for atrocious tackling with a pair of first quarter turnovers-turned-touchdowns, including an 83-yard interception/stroll by beloved Darrell Green. Game ball goes to Brian Mitchell, whose spectacular kick returns were the spark needed to lift the 'Skins to victory. Even Michael Westbrook caught some passes - it was quite a day.
    The win would end a nasty 4-game home losing streak to the Eagles and would cement the Redskins first NFC East winning record since 1991.
    Dick Stockton and the occasionally indignant Matt Millen on the call for the season finale at the brand-new Jack Kent Cooke Stadium.

    I wonder what the total return yards were in that game.

    There’s that quality form tackling and containment we redskins fans groaned under after Gibbs retired in 92 and until the team finally died (for all intents and purposes) with the end of Joe Gibbs second stint. Westbrook could have been sensational but he didn’t have the emotional side of the game intact. I’ll never forget that news footage of him beating up Stephen Davis at practice. Norv Turner was an offensive guru but he had no sense of how to reign in people like Westbrook. He was never fit to be a head coach.

    • @RetroSkins
      @RetroSkins  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Norv would have been a GREAT coach in the 80’s but the player culture really started to change in the 90’s. Everyone wanted to be Deion.
      Agree completely regarding Westbrook - his head wasn’t in the game (so many dropped passes).
      Would argue that the tackling got better - under Gibbs 2.0, the defense was truly terrific (especially in ‘04) while the offense was hit or miss during that period.

      Yeah, everything improved under Gibbs but he (who is arguably the best head coach ever in his prime) made a huge mistake in giving the offensive play calling reigns to someone else after year 1. Offense was Gibbs metier. Also, firing Marty Schottenheimer after one season was probably the worst bungle Snyder ever made, which is really saying something considering his penchant for senseless decision making. Marty clearly had the team headed in the right direction by seasons end and Spurrier was an abomination.

      @@RetroSkins Norv's offense showed flashes in '96 with Terry Allen running wild, '98 with Trent Green slinging it, and in '99 with Brad Johnson, Stephen Davis, and Westbrook/ Connell having 1,000 yard campaigns. He who shalt not be named a year later torpedoed all of it

      Flashes but inconsistent as hell. And the guy who was actually able to instill a sense of consistency and stability (Schottenheimer) was impetuously replaced by Spurrier who was a spectacular failure.

      That said, Spurrier did capture what being a Redskins fan after Snyder took over felt like, in one classic, unguarded moment (th-cam.com/video/zZBJTXyDL7g/w-d-xo.html).

      Ha ha. I will say this, the fact that art monk ended up leaving the Redskins after 93 to play for the Jets and retired as a Philadelphia eagle still bothers me to this day. Few players I can think of are more quintessentially Redskin.
