My wife took it upon herself to donate after I began learning this tune. She didn't have to; I would have done that myself. You are a born piano teacher.
That's very kind of you both - thanks! Really appreciate your support and positive feedback.
Tom
I’m a beginner, but learning this wonderful piece gradually, thanks to you, is motivating!

Enjoy learning Maple Leaf Rag!
Tom
주다 이음악을사람 hopefully I can learn it soon
You play beautifully! I wish I had a piano to practice on. I'm so sad Joplin isn't more well known. He deserves a bigge place in history. . He was truly a musical genius. And completely self taught. Well I guess that's not really true is it since he did have piano lessons from a neighbor. But he taught himself how to play other instruments.
Thank you - you also have a very similar name to a close friend of mine, T. Rawlings :)
I think Joplin is still popular, more so since the use of 'The Entertainer' in the motion picture 'The Sting'... certainly other items like Maple Leaf and Easy Winners etc are played.
@@KeyboardSkillsPro he's definitely popular amongst people who know music but not to the regular person. At least no one I know.
I'd reckon because while Joplin is often called America's greatest contribution to classical music of the 20th century by classical musicians, Joplin was a Black man in a White America so there is a stigma that had to be overcome, plus the propagation of classical music of what we study today is often a product of a dying Germany followed by a construct of white supremacy make it so that schools tend to study Bach, Beethoven and the like. Also the Geneva Convention decided where concert A was, not relevant, but in the same vein of history. Fun fact I guess. (also does bach being austrian disprove my point? idk I heard something on a podcast talking about this, maybe I'm drawing false conclusions). Good thing that good music is good no matter where it comes from, and that it was published enough to survive the years.
And to think that I learned how to play this (note for note) back in 1984 by listening to a cassette tape because I couldn't read music!!
Wow!
@@KeyboardSkillsPro Had there been TH-cam and tutorials like yours, I could have learned the song in a week compared to the 4 months it took!
After wrecking great classical pieces all my life I tried my first foray into ragtime just a year ago when I learned Joseph Lamb's "Bohemia". I'm still getting it down since I couldn't leave well enough alone and have to add all these damn embellishments. As written though, it's not as hard as I thought it'd be and it fell together quite well eventually. So now I'm getting tired of it so I'm trying this. Hell, I've had the music for over 15 years, it's time, ya' know? This seems to be one of the more helpful videos on TH-cam so if I stick with it (spring will eventually get here in a couple months, lol) I feel this series will be most helpful.
Wonderful to read your words, Andork. Good luck with the MLR!
Tom

I am not amazing at piano, but i do have an ear and i learned the entertainer be Scott Joplin but i'm trying to play this one and it sounds good so far, but i don't have much time to practice it ever, and it really aggravated me because if i could i would practice this for hours i would, i excel so fast on piano its weird. but i am very excited to learn this piece thank you so much for the tutorial, when i learn most of it i will write here!
Enjoy learning the MLR and let us know how you progress! Thanks for watching!
Tom

Keyboard Skills Pro I have finished part 1 and I am going to practice it quite a bit before moving to part 2, taking it slowly.

Some of the rithym part is where You help a Lot yo understand thanks
Glad the video was of use.
Thanks
That's great. Do you think I can use the fourth finger in the left hand on the chords with 4th on E flat etc. Because I have a nerve damage on my l/h pinky which is difficult to control due to an accident
Sure, any fingering that produces the correct musical result is ok.

Hello Tom!
I’m finally at a point where I can pretty much play through the piece and I’d like to practice it with a metronome. I know the piece says “tempo di Marcia” but when I set my metronome to about 100 or even 120 bpm, it sounds substantially slower than the speed you and most other players I’ve heard play it at. Any thoughts? Do you happen to know what tempo you generally play this in? I really like your interpretation and would appreciate your insights. Thanks in advance!
Firstly, well done with your progress.
Joplin usually placed the tempo instruction - 'Not Fast' - at the top of his music.
Count in '2' using the metronome at around 90 bpm. Think of the piece as 'two in the bar' (like a March).
Some players go faster if they're playing a more jazzy, stride piano style but the traditionalist prefers a more steady March style tempo.
Good luck!

@@KeyboardSkillsPro I’m embarrassed. Turns out I’ve been using a metronome wrong... counting 1/8th note=120 instead of quarter notes... apologies! :)
Ha! We live and learn!
Good luck :)
Tom
Do you think a grade 5 pianist will be able to play this??❤️ love you vids btw 😊
Possibly a challenge but worth a go!
Cool
Thanks

Could someone write the last 3 chords @ 12:12 as what letter notes I should play for each (A flat, b7, “big a flat chord”) in letters, for example (FACE)
@b - at
Eb + Ab + C [Ab major]
Eb + Bb + Db [Eb7]
Eb + Ab + C [ Ab Major]
It is a 1 - 5 - cadence / ending
Have fun!
Tom
Keyboard Skills Pro just figured out the last 3 chords I think is an octave of (eflat,c)to (eflat, csharp, bflat) to (aflat octave,c,eflat) and have it all together time for part 2!
This is just for me 6:20
Good stuff!
That a flat instead of g in the second measure bugs the HECK out of me!!!
keep at it!
Is that a wrong note at 0:16? Otherwise perfect playing.
Possibly the glare of the lights and camera...or artistic license :)
Tom
@@KeyboardSkillsProok. Thanks for the tutorials. I'm up to part 3 now :D
@@sagemoondancer8179 Well done - keep at it! Tom
What's wrong with that? Watch Wilhelm Kempf playing the Moonlight. Lots of "wrong notes" and one of the finest renditions on here. I'd rather that than some mechanical airbrushed modern perfectionist.
To be honest changing original scores is what music is all about!
Also @Keyboard Skills Pro by chance could you do a tutorial on how to play Handful of keys by fats Waller? Check it out it has no in depth tutorial on the entire internet only midis and sheets and has a vibe like this song
Great piece and have just bought the sheet music myself to learn - watch this space :)

Guessing you mean "cool" :)
