    Even if it's just in the comments, I liked his passion for knives and his opinion on designs.
    Also check out ‪@JoeDoomsday‬ for a look at the newer edition of the Ontario SK5 Blackbird in S35V. he does really good first look vids on all kinds of knives to help you with your knife buying decisions.

      @LegionTacticoolCutlery Yes ..😔
      Really bums me out. I know the last time I commented, he was struggling with someone who was nit picking his videos.
      I think he was being harrased by someone, and it can wear ya down.
      I went through that years ago and even spilled over into my home life. Had a person calling companies/publishers and feeding totally crazy lies about me.
      I've learned that the minute there's odd comments that keep progressing, I just block um . Constructive criticism is fine, but there's a difference.
      Social media can be a challenge for some folks ... I hope he returns , his collection was awesome . I used his content for making purchases or for future blades on my list.
      I think certain people get jealous of that and use the cowardice of the internet shadow to bash people.

      Ah yes,I am a collector of things and I do take any content I can find before making any knife purchase and any type of content is good.I am new to TH-cam as far as making content,I am learning more and more,what do you like to see in a video?

    • @airiksknifereviews9548
      @airiksknifereviews9548  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @WickedKnivesandThings I like to see the knife up close . Many reviewers tend to be on screen more than the tool. Since I live in an area where you can't find quality knives at the local shop, my only options are video and pictures.
      I can tell a lot by seeing an edge up close, especially the geometry, which is super important to me. Some videos ya never get to even see the knife other than 15 feet away or maybe a quick "here it is " 2 seconds up close view .
      One of my favorite reviewers is Aaron at Gideons Tactical . Even more these days because he has broken out of his comfort zone. He has started reviewing bushcraft knives like puukkos plus knives from European countries .
      He blends both styles of reviewing and has perfected the craft of selling people a knife.
      I've been their since pretty much the beginning of his channel. It's awesome seeing his family thrive from all that hard work. That brother is an inspiration in the knife review world but also as a father and husband to his family.
      That said, I still like simple tablebtop vids where people are just sharing their knives out of the love they have for it. Heck, I even watch those vids from Japan , I don't understand a word, but I speak knife just fine 😁
      Also, another great is "Virtuevoice."
      he speaks great English and inspired me to start making my knives my own. His reprofile videos are priceless to me and some of my best memories on TH-cam knife stuff.
      Sorry for the long reply, I love talking knives LOL 🤣 like ya can't tell right .

    I'm glad you made the point about stropping after sharpening. Not enough people know, and its more important with the harder steels especially if the knife is going to be used for many tasks.

    • @airiksknifereviews9548
      @airiksknifereviews9548  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Stropping saves a knife from the abuse of a stone 😉
      Once I've found my preferred geometry, I rarely need to grind on the edge ever again.
      A ceramic rod and strop are basically everything I need . Unless I really screw up and hit a rock , which has happened to me a couple of times when camping.
      That 154cm is very tricky steel for newbies and created a bad reputation for that SK5. It's a good steel, but I think they should have released it with a carbon and stainless option.

    This is a nylon sheath done right. If more companies would take this approach, I think more people would see that nylon is a wonderful sheath material. It doesn't stretch like leather and it's not as noisy and stiff as kydex.

      It's pretty spendy now in S35V
      I got this one for $80 , Boy has that changed. You can still get the 420hc version for $105 , that's pretty high for 420hc.
      There used to be a ton of these blades out there cause Ontario was selling all their factory seconds for cheap. They had the grey micarta scales, and folks couldn't even tell why they were seconds.

      @CommonCentsOutdoorsman That's actually a good deal for S35V.
      Benchmade wants $250+ for their Bushcrafter in S30V and the sheath kinda sucks .
      The Ontario knife sheath is one of the only nylon sheaths that I actually like.
      Its made in the USA , I forgot to mention that in my vid, the new one is cool and looks to be the same sheath maker.

    One of the best from Ontario! 👍 My experience with Ontario over the years has always been hit and miss. My Blackbird, however, was great out of the box. One micarta scale was darker than the other, but zero fit and finish issues and a nice symmetrical secondary grind. Very nice Kephart-like design and an all-around great knife. 👍

      I've had two both were awesome ..I think the Micarta scales were better for vibration.. I am considering putting liners on mine to reduce that high pitch vibration. Sounds cool on ceramic rods though 😁 wicked edge.

    I had this knife in same steel. Love hated it. Just as you said, it was a beast to sharpen. Interesting suggestion that it is a very fine wire like burr hard to detect. I also found the steel chippy. Loved the handle. ergonomics , despite the handle being somewhat thin. Usually like much thicker handle, but like you said blackbird just felt right. Nice choice for a “ one id never sell”
    Wish they had one in 1095 or 1075

    • @airiksknifereviews9548
      @airiksknifereviews9548  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They do have a 420hc, but that's pretty much stainless. I don't mind 420hc if it's a good usa heat treatment. That said , 1095hc or even an 80CrV2 would be freaking killer.
      I haven't had any chipping with mine, but I do convex the shoulders it helps.
      My Benchmade Bushcrafter in S30V is chippy like that. I took it below 20° with a higher V grind, and it started getting micro chipping. They send it out with a very tiny blunt v grind that's way thick behind the shoulders.
      I did the same exact profile to the Gerber Prodigy and the knife is way better to use for woodwork . I wasted $220 on that Benchmade, I'll never buy another one of their blades. It came so screwed up, the handle was worse than some condor knives I've received. Stupid me, I decided just to fix it, I should have got a refund.
      Ya live an learn . ...
      For me, I'm a carbon fan always will be. Carbon takes on charecter, unlike stainless, which just gets horrible looking.
      I guess im just old and stubborn.

    • @zetterberg
      @zetterberg 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@airiksknifereviews9548 couldnt agree more with the Benchmade bushcrafter. I Did not understand the handle ergonomics and angles on it. tried to force myself to use it cause $$$. I like S30 for folders, but Im just not good enough nor patient enough to deal with maintenance it may take to get a big chunk, fixed blade S30V back up to snuff if it chips. I think you have a video I just watched on a D2 Filser? When I saw that I thought the Benchmade should of made their handle like the Filser.! Makes sense how you alter the edge angles, microbevels to try to obviate microchips. I have gotten rid of a couple O1 blades because of chipping, probably could have just made edge changes/bevel changes like you suggested!

    • @airiksknifereviews9548
      @airiksknifereviews9548  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@zetterberg Yes it's not a forgiving steel at all I can't stand it now.
      I'm probably going to sale my Benchmade for cheap ...I do not want it anymore. I'd rather have something thats half the price and fun to work with or buy a bunch of blanks and build my own.
      I've thought about doing a full convexing but why waste the time if the knife handle hurts to use it.
      Agreed on the convexing, it can really change a blade for the better. In my world geometry is king, steel isn't as important.

    Borderline powder steel is a completely meaningless statement.
    A steel is either ingot or powdered. There _is_ a half step between the two (PSF - powdered spray forming. PSF27, for example, is a PSF version of D2), but even thats working with a MUCH coarser powder than true particle metallurgy. Calling 154cm "borderline PM" is no more correct than calling acrylic/polycarbonate _borderline G10_ because theyre both made with/of resin.
    Having said all that... You'd never notice the difference between cpm154 and 154cm outside of a strictly controlled testing environment.
    Id even go a step further and bet you wouldn't notice the difference between ingot D2, PSF27, AND CPM-D2.
    Powder metallurgy's main benefit to the knife world is unifying and minimizing the grain structures of the ultra high carbide steels.

    • @airiksknifereviews9548
      @airiksknifereviews9548  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So after saying it's a meaningless statement, you go and say, "Outside of strict testing, you couldn't tell CM 154 from 154CM. 😆
      That's what I meant by saying, borderline powder steel.
      The steel feels like powder steel on a stone. When I sharpen it in my lab using a high-tech 2×4 and sandpaper, it takes an edge like powder steel. It gets a very fine edge its not easy to see or feel, a lot like S30V in some ways ......But I'd need fancier lab equipment for that opinion.
      My "meaningless " statement has meaning to me. In my simple world of sharpening by hand and personal experience it's "borderline powder steel"...That's probably like fingernails on a chalkboard for your eyeballs to read again . ..I apologize.
      I know eyes don't hear , but it makes sense in my world.
      Meaningless to you, obviously so...
      But for me, it makes sense.

    Two things bushcraft people need to stop going on about: batoning and 90 degree spine. I don't pay $200 for a firesteel scraper, by firesteels come with scrappers. A $200 knife should not be uncomfortable to use because it has a sharp spine. I also know my knife is a fine edge tool, not a wedge like a hatchet. Use your knife as you wish, but don't complain it YOU break it, they company didn't break it, you did.

    • @airiksknifereviews9548
      @airiksknifereviews9548  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree , I don't care much for 90 degree spines I wish the industry would stop . Yet most people seem to want them on every knife made so the market gives them what they want.
      Batoning kindling is something I use my knives for but hammering a blade that's thin like this ontario sk5 , is just silly. It can do fine with 2 to 3 inch sticks esp dry seasoned wood.
      I watched a kid hammer his Ontario Sk5 through a huge log with a knot in it about 8 years or so ago. It's still on TH-cam. You should give it a look , he took a 1 inch chip out of the blade and seemed upset that it couldn't take the batoning 🤣
      I guarantee it effected sales on that knife . At the time Batoning was all the rave , everyone on TH-cam was doing it for views.
      I ain't anti batoning with a knife ...heck my Brakimo is basically a hatchet with a knife handle but , common sense is lacking these days.

      I dont care about batoning knifes but i love a 90 degree spine as an extra tool to work and shape tools almost like a card scraper. I never use them for a firesteel i use a lighter lol

      🤪
      I hear ya man, I usually sand mine down and leave just about an inch or so near the handle for scraping bark. ...Or an occasional fire steel moment to feel like I'm surviving, as I reach for my package of market store hotdogs 😁

    • @ShoahBiz
      @ShoahBiz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      A sharp spine is useful for much more than scraping a ferro rod. Maybe educate yourself before bitching. Not everyone wants to carry an axe or hatchet every time they go to the woods. Not everyone needs it. Here in the deep south I almost never need an axe as it’s never that cold and there is plenty of downed wood

    • @ShoahBiz
      @ShoahBiz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If it comes with a sharp spine you can easily dull it yourself. White river has a cool idea where they don’t have it sharp near the handle where your thumb is or near the tip but sharp on the middle of the spine.
