My ideal LEGO Space theme would focus on humans and aliens co-existing in a society. There's a recent power struggle between one of the alien factions that go rogue and decide to declare war on humans and the other alien races that they see as traitors. Aliens and humans teaming up to destroy a facist alien threat sounds pretty great to me. At least it'll promote that not all aliens are evil.
I'd like to see a Lego city wave with space stuff, mix it in with some cyberpunk, neon, a few space police and construction sets with a wide range of species. Make some Lego creator sci-fi sets with cool buildings (and bring back the monorail!!!!!!)
Why not humans as the rogues? I won't forget being surprised by this movie called small soldiers where the human like commandos were the antagonists and the gorgonites (wacky beast like creatures) were the good guys.
That could work, but something tells me LEGO wouldn't do that because they don't want to portray humans in a negative light. Then again, LEGO can be unpredictable sometimes, so who knows?
i have some stories of my own, in one there is a species of aliens who rebel against their president, who controls the entire planet, but is a political and economical catastrophe. (i'm also showing possible consequences of "what if one person rules an entire planet) he is hated by his civilians, but rarely anybody shows it, because his military is basically the police. all other planets in my sci-fi stories have 2-5 superpowers, each one with their own government. yes, i actually created alien-planets with more than one government. for one character, it's even important from which continent he comes from, on his planet!
One of the first LEGO sets I distinctly remember getting and being super excited for was the big UFO saucer... that thing ended up SOMEHOW showing up in every single story I played out. Yes, even the medieval/ninja/etc ones. I was always finding new and more outlandish ways to incorporate that thing into my stories, it was just such a fun and cool set.
UFO was my favourite Lego space line when I was a child. Now that I am an adult, I bought almost all of the major UFO sets again. They look extra awesome in dark under UV lighting.
It would be cool if the alien bugs from Galaxy Squad were the same bugs that the Insectiods Refugees were up against, adding more continuity to different Lego themes.
This made me realize how awesome a Star Trek-like space theme would be. Instead of focusing around aliens being criminals or just big monsters, aliens and humans work together to explore the universe! Could include a whole host of sub-themes set on different planets. Maybe include a hostile faction (*cough*Klingons*cough*) that threatens the peace and I think it could be a fun and diverse theme!
There is actually one amazing little easter egg in the Alien Conquest theme. In the 7066 Earth Defense HQ set, the little ship on top contains an emblem on the side. It's of a vicious looking viper and the name "NNENN" is written underneath. There was a AFOL, Nnenn, renowned in the blossoming online Lego community during the later 2000s. His MOCs were hugely influential, creative, and inspiring to many in the early Lego Flickr community. His most famous design being a Lego ship design template (Inspired by the game Gradius) requiring: 1 dorsal tail, 2 forward prongs, and 2 rear lateral wings. He called this design the "Vic Viper". But unfortunately, he passed away in 2010 due to a car accident, shaking the online community to the core. He left behind a wife, two sons, and community, of which he had took great joy engaging with all three. The easter egg in 7066 is more of a tribute to him by Lego, a clear reference, seeing as the ship also follows the exact requirements for a Nnenn-certified Vic Viper. I thought it was touching, seeing a company as large as Lego acknowledging their fans, even if it was almost a decade ago. It is the sole reason I remember Alien Conquest as fondly as I do to this day.
This seems to be the forming of a story in which the “aliens” were the original space travelers and when the humans learned about space travel they started out meeting friendly aliens but soon turned to more forceful methods leaving aliens nowhere to hude
I bet they will trail it out before fully bringing space back, something like a wave of "Ninjago in space" or "City in space". That seems to be what lego does now.
Insectoids was the last of the original space line imo. It was the turn of the millennia and while insectoids felt like they could be related to things like Ice Planet or Space Police, the ones after it like Rock Raiders and (despite being a space setting) Life on Mars didn't.
I like to theorize that the planet the Insectoids landed on in '98 was the home planet of the Galaxy Squad aliens. When they left, the newly-evolved insect minifigs used their leftover technology to become spacefarers and conquerors, leading them to enter human space and encounter the GS 15 years after the Insectoids short stint on their planet.
Amazing episode Nick ! I owe this series of yours so much , since it introduced me to many themes that I didn't really care about at the time or ones that I didn't even know existed , like this one , and I got to say that those alien insect designs are pretty incredible ! They look earthly enough for us to find them appealing but also alien enough to look even cooler and , you know .... not disgusting like real insects .
now that you mention it, i don't recall minifigs and aliens working together at one point (aside from life on mars i think) hopefully the next space theme could have humans and aliens exploring much more unknown reaches of their galaxy, finding exotic creatures, and ancient alien temples, and may or may not happen to have some sort of goal, but then again, that makes it fall into the "find the Mcuffin" cliche lego also does... hmm.... i'm going to have to think more into this later on...
and if they add an evil faction they should make them 'space pirates' that tries to steal the planet's treasure while the good faction tries to stop them
Sorry I didn't comment on any of the recent videos, but I am still happy to keep up with Lego rewind. I also thank you 4 the update video for me the information I provided I also thank you for clearing up that UFO and insect doing story, I've tried reading about it before online and it's been pretty difficult for me to understand, especially when some names were used across multiple regions. Also, I don't know what we did to deserve more regular Lego rewind episodes, but I highly appreciate them
I remember I found an incomplete set when I was lended a box of assorted legos from my cousin. The tile that topped the UFO seemed to change color when subjected to different temperatures. It was mesmerizing. I might've lost that though.
Yeeees!!! Arctic!!! That was one (plus the research submarines and the original dome racers) of my very favourite lines when I was little. I was hoping so much on seeing a special about it! Keep up the good work on this nostalgia trip!
Okay, this video made me smile. Not only did you highlight my biggest and top favorite classic Lego set - The Insectoids. You also added the music from "Jet Force Gemini". Another classic favorite game of mine from N64. I even had the strategy guide to read more into the story. That game, and this Lego set seemed like it would have been a sequel to each other. Good job man. I subscribed!
Yeah this comment is two years late, but does anyone remember that one Lego Insectoids commercial where that agent kid turned into a insect soldier after he built a set? God, that unsettled me growing up.
I grew up with Alien Conquest and Galaxy Squad those were my space themes. I had a friend you used to have like all the space police sets from 2009. Then there was clutch powers which showed off Mars Mission and Space Police. These were my introduction to the space subtheme and I keep hoping lego brings them back.
How many here would have been interested in a LEGO Space theme were there are no Humans in it and it's about two Alien factions made up of the aliens we have seen through out LEGO's history, fight each others in a galactic conflict that we don't know about.
Apparently one of my dad's friends had the Arachnoid Star Base from this line. I found the blue wing and crystals from a large haul of old LEGO he gave to me.
Honestly, you do bring up a really good point about the lack of space themes and such here. I grew up loving everything lego, and as much as I still do love lego, I find a lot of the current themes they have don't interest me much and because of that I find myself searching ebay and such for older, more Imaginative(?) sets from prior years, I mean, I think the last 3 sets I got within the last few years that were not G2 bionicle were from the lego movie, ninjago, and nexo knights, the latter being the only super interesting original property they have now to me.
I forgot how incredible the Galaxy Squad sets were. So well put together. Plus excellent bug aliens, better than almost anything of the sort that's come out since
After watching these videos, i realize a lot of the lego's i used to (Which were hand-me-downs from my dad and uncle) were from these two themes and rock raiders quite a bit.
In the season 2 wrap up video, you should mention that Galaxy Squad was likely inspired by Starship Troopers (both have human space-commandos fighting giant bugs with similar aesthetics and gear).
One of the things I'd honestly recommend for a lego space theme... would be two factions of mixed human and alien setup. To show that there's cooperation and conflict.
I had hoped you'd cover these subthemes! I remember seeing them in catalogs as a kid but didn't know all the cool lore about them, even though I had one of the smaller insectoids sets.
Oh man! This brought me back! And with that Jet Force Gemini soundtrack? That was my game and these were on my shelf! Oh man! Great video! This was a treat!
They'll probably never do this, but I'd really like to see a space theme in which there are two alien factions fighting each other, with the humans either allied with the "good" aliens or absent entirely.
I remember being in awe of older aliens body and head printing, they were exceptional. And I couldn't get over those neon pieces, they were so awesome! A simpler time.
This was such in a inspired theme, with all of those insect-like vehicles and make this a good following until 2013's Galaxy squad which has a similar to them!
I had just gotten back from a two week vacation and was fairly excited to see all these new LEGO Rewind episodes. The one thing I think that really sets you out from different channels is the love and dedication you put in each episode, regardless if you have any ties to the series or not. My ideal LEGO space theme would probably be something like classic space, but more focused on aliens with few sets involving humans. We get enough stuff with the focus set on humans, anyways, it'd be nice to do something new and to show another side of the aliens we barely ever had.
I always thought of UFO as the antagonists of Robo Force. I remember having most of these, including the big one with fiber optics and the little saucer that came with the mask. I combined that mask with my VR Troopers Ryan Steel costume for Halloween that year.
l remember sifting through my box of loose Legos for whatever l was building that day and those big grey and orange UFO pieces always being in the way.
Honestly looking back on all of the older simpler lines. I sort of feel bad that I was born in the 2000s because I got to miss out on so many good Lego sets. I hope they figure out what people want to for their sake and ours.
I think they kept falling into that human protagonist vs monsters/aliens due to people needing "characters that people can relate to". I hope they start doing more of their own IPs again besides City, Ninjago, Friends, Creator, elves, etc.
Dang, anyone who was born in the early 80's was spoiled in terms of variety, I grew up with "Human vs antagonist X" I managed to get into at least 1 of every one of those themes. Suprisingly, my brother and I used parts like that to make our own concept of various cryptids and mythological beasts to fight against evil humans who captured them and experimented on them, we even had those creator robot sets (the ones where you could make 3 humanoid robots with their own weapons at a time) start as specialized "cryptid snatchers" that would later turn against corrupt humans. I used that Russian general guy from the indiana jones jungle cutter as the govt leader and the monsters included, a 4-legged carnivorous plant, a mutant, a vampire, a shape-shifter (used a turntable with a dividing wall to replicate shape shifting), a giant sentient crab beast, a specter (using the harry potter dimentor) and some I forgot By the way, in the story the Evil cripted hunting general was not Russian, just in charge of a non descriptive country.
The "evil humans" had bleak old dark-grey vehicles with cages and the like to capture these creatures while the cryptids had locations they resided in that where threatened by humans. the villain known as "the general" had this experimental mecha with a laser cannon for one arm and a grapple claw to capture creatures The creatures had their own locations but the home base was a vampire crypt (the vampire was the smartest of the bunch, and a former ruler) with a garden and a dock to the ocean, it was attacked by tank and foot soldiers. If you had every creature there was a place for each of them to reside in at the crypt.
my brother and I used to imagine that the aliens and astronauts from mars mission eventually teamed up to fight against another more powerful race of red aliens who were related to the green ones.
@@kumatorahaltmanndreemurr glad to see my 2 year old comments getting some love, I don't build that much any more, but I'm happy to see people like the idea
Galaxy Squad is a theme I really wish I had. I grew up with Mars Mission, and some of my favorite gimmicks with that was that some of the vehicles could transform or split apart. Galaxy Squad had a better color palette(more variations), and the fact that almost every vehicle was 2-in-one(even a mech) was awesome, and the robot designs were top-notch. It would have been cool to have a "Black Squad" that would be antagonistic against the Galaxy Squad and some allied aliens, too.
It shouldn't be a stretch to have LEGO make a peaceful alien set, after all they were formed to be about peace and fun to begin with! I'd love more exploring LEGO space stuff, and most kids would too! Also, I got an old Insectoids set in a blind box sealed with a Kmart sticker still on it! Man....time...
I used it have the alien mothership from alien conquest! It was one of my favorite sets because the building experience was really great. I lost most of the pieces though, and my alien commander minifigure is really worn out. Kind of wish lego made the line last longer
I loved conquest, and thought it was very stylistic in its own way. The human vs alien theme is a sci fi classic, but I do agree with your thoughts. Maybe a new theme with a mix of conflict and exploration could give proper development to both ideas.
I kinda of feel that Life on Mars was the end of the original Lego Space continuity with a new one being explored starting with Mars Mission. The shift in the feel from exploration and cooperation to conflict as well as the shift from an slightly populated universe to the jam-packed one kinda delineates the two as separate entities.
This is an incredible video like always. You gave some great points about these themes. Fun fact: Lego actually planned a prototype sub theme called Sea-Tron. This would have been based on an underwater planet. The planet would have had an underwater monorail and the first Lego aliens ever.
Hey nick! Thaknk you for covering the theme i didnt know i wanted... I had the 6817 back when i was a very little kid and didnt know shit about lego at all, it was a gift, one of the tree that made me a lego fan for life! Now i know what to hunt for my lego museum!
This episode hit me like a truck. I have few memories of my childhood and while I wouldn't say it was bad (especially compared to some parts of the world) it was very mixed with a lot of unresolved issues. But I remember Insectoids well. I loved this line, despite my fear of bugs at the time. But seeing this brought feelings of happiness and sadness in equal measure. If ever they brought back this line or did some sort of anniversary set I would lay down money so quickly my wallet would cry.
Alright... Thought of it a bit more and I came up with my ideal space theme... It'll be centered on a squad of human and aliens on an expedition to the very unknown regions of their own Galaxy. One half of their Galaxy is known, and filled with get this, more upgraded versions of every space faction, such as the M-trons, Futurons, and Unitrons. Aside from the occasional Spyrius, there isn't any other antagonizing faction (more on that, for another day) the other half of the Galaxy is mostly unexplored, giving us fresh new ideas such as exotic creatures or ancient temples lost in time. This Squad could easily be an updated version of the Exploriens but that'll be easy and I wanna reveal to what happened to them in a moment. No this squad is either a brand new faction or a group of rag tag space venturers that are trying to make their way into the cosmos by finding ancient artifacts. One day, they get their big break by having the opportunity to explore the unknown regions, but in one of their expeditions they accidentally caused a chain reaction to release something ancient and evil. This evil has this blend of technology and mystics that nobody has ever seen. The explorers eventually learn that this new threat once conquered what is now the unknown regions, until they were sent to a pocket dimension and sealed off by whoever built the temples long ago. But now that one temple is unlocked, the ancient evil now seeks the other temples from other worlds to regain it's army and finish conquering the rest of the Galaxy. So it's up to this band of explorers to race across the stars and fend off the villains from unlocking the temples. During their mission, they will find another old faction in the unknown region which, unfortunately are just the remnants of the Exploriens... they were wiped out by something unknown... Eventually, they come across the Explorien starship and Ann-droid which they were able to reactivate, and heavily upgrade them (don't worry, Ann-droid will still look like her old self just more upgraded and less deviation) and make the Explorien starship their new flagship. And year one could end with other factions lending a hand in fending off the ancient evil in a last stand as they desperately construct a portal to seal them back into the pocket dimension... PHHEW... and that's just like, season one if this became a show... Lemme know what you think while I come up with season 2...
Looking back on this, if Lego really wanted to, they could easily turn all of Classic Space into a TV show or cinematic movie universe. You already have "good guys," "bad guys," and "neutrals," with the Space Police/M-Tron, Blacktron, and the Insectoids/Zotaxians as well as civilians(Futuron, Ice Planet, Unitron) caught in the middle. It probably will never happen, but a guy can dream.
I had a few of the alien conquest and galaxy quest sets which I thought were pretty cool, but man I wish they were creative as ufos and insectoids. I wish I could have seen more of Lego's days of what I'd call "intelligent Creativity." Waiting for a Lego theme that isn't watered down and predictable.
I loved Exploriens (1996), as it had a star trek feel to it. Exploration & stetting bases was core, not combat. Up to that point had I mostly had Space police II & Spyrius sets which had the good guy, bad guy premus.
Man, I feel honored that you replied, considering you have a personal life and how old this video is. I should also say congrats on your comics making it to the public eye. :^)
Raise your hand if you ever used those diagonal UFO wings to make an X-Wing moc back in the day.
My brother did!
D. R. Yeisley's Creations Close enough.
Nick on Planet Ripple Here's The Simpsons reference to fit this Lego Space Subtheme:
Kent Brockman: "I, for one, welcome our new insects overlord."
nah sorry i wasnt alive lol
I remember watching on youtube when myself back in 2009/2010 watching videos that involved the history of the lego space theme told by commercials
In the grim darkness of the far future, there is war and only war
AND THAT IS HOW OUR GOD-EMPEROR REQUIRES IT TO BE, HERETIC!
warhammer 40k was right all along
Warhammer 40k refers
Blood for the blood god
"The Emperor protects.."
My ideal LEGO Space theme would focus on humans and aliens co-existing in a society. There's a recent power struggle between one of the alien factions that go rogue and decide to declare war on humans and the other alien races that they see as traitors. I Actually like the UFO Theme.

Badass.
I never really knew the Zotaxians and the Insectoids were the same race before I first found this episode about 2 years ago. Awesome research.

We definetly need more space themes
Gandalf the Tsaagan I agree; it’s been to long.
YES
Exactly
Or spyrius II
Ninjago, Nexo Knights are kind of space Themes.
Warning: this video may “bug” you...
The Clone Ranger ow the puns

Blacktron could return as the big baddies, we know from Wrench and the CMF Space Villain that they're still kickin' it out there.
i think the hostile factions will be space pirates that will bring back the robot arms and legs
That would be cool. I'd love to have a theme like that. I could see the hostile faction being Blacktron, it's been ages since we've seen them return.

Holy crap. I had no idea.
Well, the Lego movie sequel will end up going to space (as seen in the trailer), so I am sure we will see some original space sets from there.
Hope!
Wrong
Sadly it doesn't
Yeah. The Pop-Up Party Bus is a nice model in its own right, but not quite what I had in mind at the time of writing.

You do realize they’ve had “City in space” sets for years? They’ve just been reconstructions of modern space crafts nothing interesting.
I imagine a Ninjago season where the Ninja return to space in a Zodiac/Constellation inspired season.
So many episodes coming out so quickly! These are amazing as always.

I remember getting a lot of Insectoids and UFO kits for Christmas one year when I was very young, I loved these themes so much
I love the UFO minifigures, they are very unique and LEGO doesn’t have anything else similar to them
My cousin had a lot of those alien sets in 99. I wasn’t much of a lego person but my favorite lines was always Life on Mars.
If they bring back all the alien races from all the years, the Alien Conquest aliens need their leader's voice to be Jim Carrey
Yeeees!!! Arctic!!! That was one (plus the research submarines and the original dome racers) of my very favourite lines when I was little. I was hoping so much on seeing a special about it!

My ideal LEGO space theme would probably be something like classic space, but more focused on aliens with few sets involving humans. We get enough stuff with the focus set on humans, anyways, it'd be nice to do something new and to show another side of the aliens we barely ever had.
Considering how often I still make mistakes in some of these vids, that means a lot.
you don't know how much i love those classic space episodes! i'd be 100% down for space police next
I always thought of UFO as the antagonists of Robo Force.
I remember having most of these, including the big one with fiber optics and the little saucer that came with the mask. I combined that mask with my VR Troopers Ryan Steel costume for Halloween that year.
AWESOME!
The use of the Jet Force Gemini music is great
It seemed pretty appropriate.
l remember sifting through my box of loose Legos for whatever l was building that day and those big grey and orange UFO pieces always being in the way.
This whole era of lego is so nostalgic for me growing up in the 90s
I used that Russian general guy from the indiana jones jungle cutter as the govt leader and the monsters included, a 4-legged carnivorous plant, a mutant, a vampire, a shape-shifter (used a turntable with a dividing wall to replicate shape shifting), a giant sentient crab beast, a specter (using the harry potter dimentor) and some I forgot
By the way, in the story the Evil cripted hunting general was not Russian, just in charge of a non descriptive country.
The "evil humans" had bleak old dark-grey vehicles with cages and the like to capture these creatures while the cryptids had locations they resided in that where threatened by humans.
the villain known as "the general" had this experimental mecha with a laser cannon for one arm and a grapple claw to capture creatures
The creatures had their own locations but the home base was a vampire crypt (the vampire was the smartest of the bunch, and a former ruler) with a garden and a dock to the ocean, it was attacked by tank and foot soldiers. If you had every creature there was a place for each of them to reside in at the crypt.
please make a brickfilm of this!
my brother and I used to imagine that the aliens and astronauts from mars mission eventually teamed up to fight against another more powerful race of red aliens who were related to the green ones.
Holy shit the creativity here is astounding. I'd watch a movie with this premise!
Glad to see that water background I made you is being used! I had these sets as a kid so this video takes me back
Thank you again, for that.
Also, I've since picked up some of these.
UFO was and always will be my favourite set. I was waiting for you to cover it.
The helmets are next level and I just hope they bring them back!
These videos are epic! Love the info and quality. People like you give me hope for humanity
UFO is the best of all lego space themes!!! xD
I loved conquest, and thought it was very stylistic in its own way. The human vs alien theme is a sci fi classic, but I do agree with your thoughts. Maybe a new theme with a mix of conflict and exploration could give proper development to both ideas.
I liked conquest because I liked how rank and file the human troopers were especially with gold visors
@@hayeshurley2789 yeah, it did have pretty good design in that way
I kinda of feel that Life on Mars was the end of the original Lego Space continuity with a new one being explored starting with Mars Mission.
Oh, I'm well aware of Seatron. This too will have its day...
Hey nick! Thaknk you for covering the theme i didnt know i wanted...
I had the 6817 back when i was a very little kid and didnt know shit about lego at all, it was a gift, one of the tree that made me a lego fan for life! Now i know what to hunt for my lego museum!
I loved the galaxy squad build designs
I loved the UFO LEGO theme, I used to use the minifigs as Predictors. As I had no toys from the movie.👍
UFO and Insectoids are 2 of the best space themes of all time in my opinion. Up there with classic space.
I always thought these were some of the coolest sets ever
OMG nostalgia, I had the locust one with light and sound effect loll
I remember and had sets from both! Loved the funky shapes and used them for years.
You've made me realize just how similar to the grim darkness of the 40K setting some of the later LEGO space themes can be.
Wow. Lego paints a really dark picture for the future. All those dead Aliens. Sad.
I like to see the aliens as too wise for warfare.
Damn a good way for Lego to revive this set is to have builds of the giant insects alongside the insect vehicle imitations.
Love your work man! Brings me back to my childhood!
That's a good point about the earlier space, no one was necessarily the bad guy
I remember they had a crossover comic in the Lego Magazine that pit the Insectoids against Scooby-Doo. Talk about really slow foreshadowing.
Woah, WHAT...? Jinkies.
Also you should create a patreon I'm sure some of us would be glad to support you!
These were my favorite series ever I bet I still have them in a box I had a bunch
I really love these. Hardly any lego TH-camrs focus on the retro stuff.
TheMunchieMovies More on the way.
Cool the Insectoids are creative with their disguises.
Dang I love this series!
When was younger i would dream of these lego videos keep it up
This series has helped me identify tons of my old Lego parts!
I love that you used jetforce Gemini sound track the music in the game is epic and not known by many.
Alextremo B It fits these themes pretty well.
Nick on Planet Ripple I agree with the bugs and cool Lego space ships and nice video keep up the great work.
Nice, binged this series yesterday and today you upload a new video. Nice job!
I love this series so much. I look forward to every new episode
i was waiting for this one
i've had the 6907: Sonic Stinger
and tried to make a moc of 6977: Arachnoid Star Base
Gotta admit, the video is great on its own. But the Jet Force Gemini music in the background makes it *amazing.*
It seemed fitting for the subject matter.
Man, I feel honored that you replied, considering you have a personal life and how old this video is. I should also say congrats on your comics making it to the public eye. :^)
thank you for reminding me of insectoids, i had set 6969 and i wish i still had all the parts
I made a cuppel of incectoids Mocs. But then they fell apart and I used the remaining pieces for other non insectoid Mocs.
5:28 Xenos purging intensifies, Warhammer 40k LEGO incoming confirmed...
goddamn this is one fun series to watch man!
