    Lecture Overview
Ninety percent of the cells humans carry are microbes. Only a few of the bacteria we encounter are pathogenic and can cause disease. Pathogens possess the inherent ability to cross anatomic barriers or breach other host defenses that limit the microbes that make up our normal flora. A significant part of human evolution has gone into developing ways to thwart microbial intrusion. In turn, microbes have come up with clever ways to avoid and circumvent host defenses but human - microbe interactions is still a "Work in Progress." When we study pathogens we learn as much about ourselves as we do about them.
Helicobacter pylori lives in the human stomach. It causes gastritis, ulcer disease and even gastric cancer. Some H. pylori can inject a protein, CagA, into gastric epithelial cells. CagA interacts with the tight junctions that bind cells together and with signaling molecules affecting motility and proliferation. CagA is associated with ulcer disease and cancer but we don't understand how it works to favor malignancy. Not long ago in history most humans carried H. pylori ; the incidence of carriage and gastric cancer is dropping but there is evidence that this microbe also had a protective effect on human health.

I made it to end! Expecting a better movie ending... great info and all but! ...I find it hard to comprehend how this bright scientist refers to H. Pylori as if it was a “pet”! Considering that 1% of humans is a ton of people who will die because of this “pet”, perhaps we need to urgently remember why we study these bacterias, that is, Not for the fun of knowledge but to save lives of dads, moms, sons and daughters of someone. Let’s refocus! *snap!*

Great video. I don't buy the thought that it could be commensal however. I think the rise in gerd isn't because we got better at eradicating it but rather the rise in processed and crappy food, which is well known and ever more well studied to show increases in digestive issues. I tend to think h.pylori is simply an enemy we have never been able to eliminate, but should. There are a few very promising ways to do this via incredibly effective probiotics such as CECT 7736, but no one makes it available, and they have been working on a phage treatment for it which would be AMAZING and I would be first in line for.

I just had an endoscopy today. Dr told me that the Cadillac tool of diagnosis is endoscopy. They leave tell tale signs of damage behind and the mucous is more “friable” there. I’ve been in hospital twice this year, in July I was in the ICU over this due to all the vomiting that put me in serious trouble both times. It’s been going on for years, especially since 2014 for me and seems cyclic, like every 90-120 days. It’s bizarre. Anyway he told me the endoscopy is the right way to diagnosis it.
