Question: when Delta operators come from other branches of the military other than the Army, do they maintain membership in their former branches? For example, when Army guys go into Delta, they still take annual photos in their Class-A Army uniforms, so, my question is, would Delta members who came from say the air force or marine corps take their official military photo in their respective branch class-A uniform or an Army class A uniform, now that they're in Delta? My point is, Delta is a semi-independent force within the Dept of the Army, but also part of Army Special Operations Command, but also part of JSOC, so when a member joins Delta from another branch and not the regular Army, are those members now officially part of the US Army or just Delta? Strange question, I know, just curious.
Both, you nevers leave your original unit, and now you are attached to other more or so of special unit(specialist I think) /titles on your patch. That's why they are called "1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D)". The philosophy behind is whenever you attached the unit to a operation, it changed the dynamics of everything, or reversed the bad situation the original unit was in. So the department are hoping to find group of guys who has the capability and willingness to perform and sacrifice themselves for missions. Always output 101/100.

It's a mystery to me. This dude was neck deep in extreme carnage and killing and appears to look in great mental shape. Then some people experience less and can't function in civilian life. I don't want to judge unfairly because I have not experienced it. I don't think the guy is a psycho or anything but he's cool. He has ice water in his veins.

It was terrible and didn't affect him so much when younger but now it haunts him. The human mind is hard to understand. Some of my first memories of my childhood was a car accident I was a part of. It was in a time where seat belts were not worn or didn't exist. My aunt was driving and lost control and hit head on with a tree. My mom and 3 week old brother were in the front seat and I was in the back. I was the only one uninjured. I remember my mom's screams and her face pouring out blood and holding my unresponsive brother. My brother lived for about 7 years with severe mental retardation that required 24-7 attention from her. She died inside when he died. Life was pretty much a hell for my parents. Alcoholism took over and did it's damage. Mom died from a long bout with Alzheimer's. Dad's 90 now and neither of us go the past because of the terror of the memories. Sometimes we have to try to turn the memories away best we can. Thanks for your reply.
I suffer from PTSD and TBI from several serious deployments (SF, non-US). Some of the people I was with in theatre, have had zero reactions to some of the situations that has severely "damaged" me, where as a lot of the situations that have rattled their existences, I cant even remember or I remember them as trivial. I have come to learn that, at least in my case, it has been a combination of childhood trauma (of which there has been a lot), wartime trauma (of which there has been a lot) and one or more triggers. The accumulated psychological stress of my total life, combined with a specific trigger (or triggers) have made my brain react the way it has. Some people come out of childhood and adolescence with a whole different set of tools and experiences, and they never get PTSD. Some of the toughest dudes alive, the biggest heroes I know of, suffer from severe trauma, and some don't. I guess some just win the lottery, and others don't. One thing is for damned sure though, I will never judge a person on him or her having, or not having PTSD, TBI or any other syndrom.

It depends on the individual. I was in an SF unit and experienced all manner of carnage (dead and mangled bodies, IEDs, you name it, it happened during the deployments). Quite frankly, even the day after our longest firefight (up in Uruzgan Province), I slept like a baby, and I have never had nightmares about combat. However, I do have hyper-vigilance, so I am always aware of my surroundings and always in condition "yellow". I think the shock of combat shows up differently in different people. But I took some actions as well to help keep everything as normal as possible. I am very much into physical fitness, which is great for stress. Also, I really protect my sleep and sleep times (no late nights out, etc.). Lastly, I stopped drinking anything with caffeine and as well as alcohol (which I abused for some time).

Nobody over under the age of like 95, that was actually born in America and served can even understand what an actual peer to peer war even looks like. WWII was the last real one. People talk about how bad Ukraine is, and even that isn’t even close. I mean, a lot of people think the next one may very well be it, for good. Nothing could be further away from shooting dudes in zero armor relying solely on whatever training we left them with in the 80’s and not much else beyond some crude IEDs. Vietnam was similar, and they won…consider that for a moment…scary stuff.

There's a dark psychology to war for the guys who like it. The adrenaline rush is like nothing else. It can't be matched. Regular life afterwards doesn't feel important.
Likeable guy but clearly has some psychopathic traits. Not that abnormal for that community, although most other Delta guys in interviews are more low key.
He's right, even within the military there are people who will not react well to being shot at. I think the natural response is for people to look for cover or hide. Most of us will not run towards the gun fire. Still, the training kicks in for most and they do it. Some will go right towards the fire because that adrenaline kicks in and we want some too. Last, there is always one or two that will freeze under pressure.
the shooting never bothered me. It was policing up the bodies. Still gives me the heeby jeebies. Strangely I never felt fear. my mind just went into thinking over drive planning out my next moves and listening for commands and that it. I was a high performance computer with a gun. I can't really describe it any better. hyper alert, hyper responsive, planning on the go. I kinda miss it but i can do without the bodies. Not sure what that makes me but that's how i have felt and still feel even today.
😂 Nice. I grew up in central California in the 90s. I was 12 years old the time I was shot at. By the time i was 14 my friends and I will be busting up laughing as Bullets whizzed by our heads as we're running. It's crazy thinking about now but you do get used to it. When there was gunfire in the neighborhood I would run to it to see if anybody I know got hit and to tried to help if I could. But i never seen any real combat. Awesome story bro

I’m sure that part of the reason Delta training starts at the basics is to weed out anybody with certain attitudes. It’s ok to maybe be thinking in your own head “ we already know this “ while still doing it without complaining about it and with a good attitude and maximum effort. But I’d guess that the guy who points that out and complains and doesn’t have a good attitude about it is getting dropped
I would say everything changes when your there and in the fight. I went looking for a guy who had robbed me with a cheater pipe in back town Atlanta. Called cops twice, they didn’t come so I tried to handle it.
I knew a guy that served in the Army and went to Viet Nam, when he got back he wound up on the U.S. Army shooting team, after a while he was coaching the team and he said that every time he got a new group of shooters none of them knew how to load magazines. He told me that was because normally in basic training they had all the screw ups load the magazines for everyone else.

Movies and tv have shown women in special ops and beating the shit out of 309lb dudes, but it’s a fantasy. Not trying to be a dick, but we have to come back to reality at some point.

I have just retired from the fire service after 30 yrs and the last 2 years as a recruit instructor, if a fire recruit was acting out of control continually they would be told maybe the firefighting career is not for you.

By the time I hit university I was more mature than my contemporaries because I learned the hard way.

I’m not in the military, but I would assume your height and weight would just depend on how much muscle you have. The army has certain guidelines and charts for men and women regarding height and weight, and there are different standards for people who are going into infantry versus clerical or drone work. You probably want to start at the army website to find all of these different bits of information. Probably want to also do some research about the women who supported the special forces guys in Afghanistan. They did get a degree of special forces training, but their job was to deal with Afghan women. Once the special forces guys had broken down the doors and pulled the men out these women would deal with the Afghan women, finding out intel info. It was as a very serious job and I know at least one woman was killed. There’s a book that came out about five years ago about these women. I think the program has been dismantled to some degree, but it’ll give you an idea of what working with special forces as a female would be like.

It depends on the individual. I was in an SF unit and experienced all manner of carnage (dead and mangled bodies, IEDs, you name it, it happened during the deployments). Quite frankly, even the day after our longest firefight (up in Uruzgan Province), I slept like a baby, and I have never had nightmares about combat. However, I do have hyper-vigilance, so I am always aware of my surroundings and always in condition "yellow". I think the shock of combat shows up differently in different people. But I took some actions as well to help keep everything as normal as possible. I am very much into physical fitness, which is great for stress. Also, I really protect my sleep and sleep times (no late nights out, etc.). Lastly, I stopped drinking anything with caffeine and as well as alcohol (which I abused for some time).

There's a dark psychology to war for the guys who like it. The adrenaline rush is like nothing else. It can't be matched. Regular life afterwards doesn't feel important.

He's right, even within the military there are people who will not react well to being shot at. I think the natural response is for people to look for cover or hide. Most of us will not run towards the gun fire. Still, the training kicks in for most and they do it. Some will go right towards the fire because that adrenaline kicks in and we want some too. Last, there is always one or two that will freeze under pressure.
the shooting never bothered me. It was policing up the bodies. Still gives me the heeby jeebies. Strangely I never felt fear. my mind just went into thinking over drive planning out my next moves and listening for commands and that it. I was a high performance computer with a gun. I can't really describe it any better. hyper alert, hyper responsive, planning on the go. I kinda miss it but i can do without the bodies. Not sure what that makes me but that's how i have felt and still feel even today.

😂 Nice. I grew up in central California in the 90s. I was 12 years old the time I was shot at. By the time i was 14 my friends and I will be busting up laughing as Bullets whizzed by our heads as we're running. It's crazy thinking about now but you do get used to it. When there was gunfire in the neighborhood I would run to it to see if anybody I know got hit and to tried to help if I could.
But i never seen any real combat. Awesome story bro

I’m sure that part of the reason Delta training starts at the basics is to weed out anybody with certain attitudes. It’s ok to maybe be thinking in your own head “ we already know this “ while still doing it without complaining about it and with a good attitude and maximum effort. But I’d guess that the guy who points that out and complains and doesn’t have a good attitude about it is getting dropped

I knew a guy that served in the Army and went to Viet Nam, when he got back he wound up on the U.S. Army shooting team, after a while he was coaching the team and he said that every time he got a new group of shooters none of them knew how to load magazines. He told me that was because normally in basic training they had all the screw ups load the magazines for everyone else.

Most female SEAL candidates struggle with carrying the boats and logs, doing pull ups, having grip strength and completing the “Dirty Name” on the obstacle course. Also, a lot of female SEAL candidates break their legs or develop stress fractures.

And if you look at the first female Rangers, a few of the RI’s came out and said that they were forced to give the women 3rd chances on No-go’s and the women got to go back to the rear to rest and take care of hygiene while the men stayed in the field.
Movies and tv have shown women in special ops and beating the shit out of 309lb dudes, but it’s a fantasy. Not trying to be a dick, but we have to come back to reality at some point.

Yes he may come off as a true person, but it was good to see that he realised that maybe running straight at the enemy also puts his team mates in a position that they have to put themselves in a dangerous situation. I have just retired from the fire service after 30 yrs and the last 2 years as a recruit instructor, if a fire recruit was acting out of control continually they would be told maybe the firefighting career is not for you.

At seventeen I thought I knew everything, my farther disagreed, my Sargent disagreed, when I became a corporal I was a little smarter, a little less immature and I tried to continue that trait the rest of my life. By the time I hit university I was more mature than my contemporaries because I learned the hard way.

These are the type of fellas that do HALO jumps fully equipped with the exception of parachutes, simply because they are the Best of the Best, of the Best. Thus they genuinely don’t need “No Stinking” parachutes, since once they get to that point they are indoctrinated into immortality, the fellas who do not survive the HALO jumps w/o parachutes, are the ones who genuinely didn’t believe in themselves, and the training. I have the capacity to profess, hypothesis, speculate on this phenomenon, because I was too was part of the rank and file of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts of America, I shall never forget the training, of engaging insurmountable odds for weeks & months, only to end up with only one merit badge, unfortunately these are moments which shall blood stay with me, for the rest of my miserable life. 😢

I’m not in the military, but I would assume your height and weight would just depend on how much muscle you have. The army has certain guidelines and charts for men and women regarding height and weight, and there are different standards for people who are going into infantry versus clerical or drone work. You probably want to start at the army website to find all of these different bits of information. Probably want to also do some research about the women who supported the special forces guys in Afghanistan. They did get a degree of special forces training, but their job was to deal with Afghan women. Once the special forces guys had broken down the doors and pulled the men out these women would deal with the Afghan women, finding out intel info. It was as a very serious job and I know at least one woman was killed. There’s a book that came out about five years ago about these women. I think the program has been dismantled to some degree, but it’ll give you an idea of what working with special forces as a female would be like.
